David's Woodturning

David's Woodturning

Жыл бұрын

In this woodturning video, I will transform a giant kiln dried oak burl / burr into a huge wooden salad bowl with additional feet carved to the bottom of the bowl. Projects, sized like this needs time and patience as you can only turn at a very low speed on the wood turning lathe until is rough turned. I also used my one-way coring system to ensure I can reduce any wood waste an maximise the burl’s potential to make more than just one wooden bowl. Happy Watching 😊

@@DavidsWoodturning You're very welcome!! I've never understood why turners don't core more of their larger wood planks since they are just putting money on the floor in wood chips wasting the great wood.

@@oneshotme mainly because of 3 reasons. 1. They do not turn big enough bowls to make it worth it. 2. It is certainly an investment as not a cheap tool 3. Lathe is not powerful enough.

That bowl is a metaphor for life. the scars and imperfections don't make it ugly. They serve to accentuate it's beauty and give it character. So too , it is in our lives. Our scars and imperfections only serve to accentuate our beuty and add to our character as we learn from them. Another Job well done. I'd finish out the smaller bowl you cut out from the middle and then give people the chance to buy them as a set or individually.

@@DavidsWoodturning but in my option a high gloss finish suits this kind of wood better which has damaged by bugs and or slightly rotten. I find wood that has been got at by bugs can loss it’s natural chatoyancy and can look quite flat. It might because bugs eat the natural sugars in wood so it loss it’s formal lustre, I’m not sure.
