I’ve been looking for a piece of Red Juniper for awhile. I knew the color would be beautiful. It’s known as Hollywood Juniper out here along the California coast (juniperus chinensis) it’s a common evergreen plant used in a lot of landscapes. Often planted next to a house or Building. They can get 20-30 feet tall if left alone, however often times they need to be trimmed or removed because they are to close to the house and cause problems. This particular plant damaged a sewer line and it had to go. As soon as I saw it I had plans on turning it. It was a fun and beautiful little project. I still have the bigger half that I will hopefully turn soon. Thank you for watching and I hope you like the video.

Thank you Letty, Hollywood Juniper is a beautiful plant. I rarely cut them down. But when I do I love to keep a piece or 2 of the wood for turning. It’s such a gorgeous color.

Thank you Ronnie. It’s lacquer. It smells pretty strong. But the finish is like glass. Spray while it’s turning about 50 RPMs and let it dry so you don’t get any drips. You don’t need to sand between coats as lacquer melts the coat underneath and bonds to it. I found a rustolium brand at Home Depot for about 7.00 a can. Other brands are getting hard to find and very expensive.

Hello Matus, thank you for watching my video. I had this same conversation with Ronnie down below in the comments. It’s just lacquer. I personally don’t like the smell, It’s very strong. However the finish is beautiful. I just recently learn that spraying the lacquer on while it’s turning about 50 RPMs and leave it running long enough to dry and not drip makes a beautiful finish. Thank you again for asking a great question.

What finish did you use?
@darrenswoodworks8695
@darrenswoodworks8695 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Roy for watching. The spray on finish is Lacquer. I’ve had a couple conversations down below in the comments about this. I’ve used lacquer many times before, but after I took it off the lathe. However I sprayed it on while the lathe was turning and let it dry while turning and the finish turned out fantastic. No drips no runs. And I didn’t need to sand between coats as long as it was smooth and nothing on it like dust or bugs. Lacquer apparently melts the old coat and bonds to it or at least that’s what I was told. It seams to work, And I really like the look. Best to you. Thank you for asking questions.

Thank you Klaus for the reminder. I was wait for someone to bring that up. I usually were fingerless gloves only on my left had when turning to protect against wood hitting my hand and burning as the chips are usually hot. If you have turned wood in a cold shop with wood chips hitting your hand it’s a hard choice to not we’re gloves. Let’s hope winter is a short one. Thanks again for watching
