I bought my first lathe 2 weeks ago. I have been watching videos constantly to learn, and you are one of the best teachers! I am concentrating on the correct tools, sharpening methods, and presenting the chisel to the wood properly, of course safety first! I bought a 10x18 lathe, face shield, 8 piece harbor freight lathe HSS chisel set ($65. U.S., inexpensive, but I want to learn to sharpen correctly with this set), and a really good chuck, a Nova Precision Midi.I also bought a Rockler full size round carbide tool ($75 on sale! LOL). My first project was a spindle, creating various cuts. Second project, I made a wooden hammer. Third project was a pencil cup. I really enjoy turning, and videos like yours help us beginners to see how things are done RIGHT. I bought a Wolverine grinding system with a Vari-grind jig. That gets here tomorrow. No more turning until I sharpen these tools. (I bought the carbide tool to keep going, LOL). Looking forward to the explanation between the spindle and bowl gouges! Thanks again! ~Rusty

Nice one Mike. I liked particularly the positioning of the gouge when hollowing, It was 'understandable' (if that is the right expression). I have seen lots of similar vids but the demonstrators go so fast and you don't see clearly what part of the gouge they are starting with and revolving into the cut. I think similay close up vids would be most useful for newbies and not just for gouges, Thanks and hope you will do more similar. Oh by the way, you used a spindle gouge rather than a bowl gouge. I think viewers would like to understand the differences in each type?

Yes , that is the better way , as a woodturner I use a bowl gouge cutting towards the center against the grain , here the spindle gouge works along the grain , in a softer , more efficient and less stressful way for the chuck , I do it also with other tools in the end but the spindle gouge allows you to do all the work down to the end , well , I'll try it although I'm a bit scared...thank you !

I'm just learning to do this, I can do the outside cuts beautifully but every time I try to hollow out it just chatters and vibrates so bad the wood piece comes out of the chuck and flies across the room. I fell as though I'm missing something very simple but also very important.
