Woodturner Ky I have been waiting to see what you came up with this week. Another very nice job. What size is the gouge you used and who makes it? You sure make it look smooth. Yesterday I was at my brother in laws and he had a cut up oak tree that came down last winter. I now have some nice looking pieces at home. Today I roughed out a bowl. The bark is on real tight. I have it stored now and will check it in a few weeks. Fun stuff. You sure are right up cutting the trees in the winter. Keep up the great work.

ThePapa1947 Thanks Gary! The gouge with the really swept back grind (formed on the Oneway vari-grind or the Ellsworth jig) is a 5/8" Oneway mastercut, and the smaller gouge that I have the 40-40 grind is a Jimmy Clews special made by Thompson Tools and it is a 1/2". The 40-40 grind is an awesome grind and if you want to know how I learned about it just check out the demo "how gouges cut" by Stuart Batty here on KZbin. Amazing amount of info in that one video! Awesome to hear about the good Oak haul and that it's kept its bark so well! And if you haven't worked with fresh Oak before, make sure to dry it good and slow as Oak is a tough wood to keep from splitting. But the extra care and odd fix or crack to fill is always worth it with Oak!

Thanks for all the information on gouges. I have been looking to get a few new ones. I really liked the information you gave on moisture content as well. That will help me watch what I have packed away. We didn't really use bowl gouges at work. Mostly scrapers and I have some very big ones of all kinds of shapes. Very heavy ground from tool steel. I do have spindle gouges and one 3/8 bowl gouge that is swept back. I have the vari-grind system also. The wood I picked up was a great surprise for sure. But also one of our sons has 42 acres with most of it trees on a hillside. I never noticed but he said he has some wild cherry trees so we are going to harvest some wood from that to try out. At this point maybe we should wait for winter time again. I have never worked with fresh oak so this was cool. I have made lots of things with kiln dried oak. I was surprised with the wet stuff. ThePapa1947 I was actually wondering what tools you used in pattern making. Scrapers make a lot of sense since they can both remove wood quickly and also nibble away bit by bit to get the exact dimension. And like you said you can have multiple shapes to different applications. I wouldn't doubt you for one second that they must have been heavy duty haha That sounds like an awesome opportunity on your sons property with the cherry trees. I know what you mean about the conundrum over waiting for winter before cutting some though! I guess if the project is meant to keep the bark, it would be best to wait......as long as you have other material to turn with until then at least! And yes green wood and kiln dried wood are night and day with turning isn't it? Thanks Kyler I know for sure I want much bigger one. Is your Oneway Monster a V style or more rounded? The other thing I see is they sell them with handles and without. Do you think they are the same steel? I have 3 green bowls drying right now. Leland Cypress, Apple and Oak. I marked the date and how much they weighed. And I took moister readings off them. This is a learning lesson for me. Almost sounds like I am hooked on turning green wood now. Perhaps but I still have many ideas on segmented bowls with feature rings. Actually those types are more glue up than turning but I like that also. I think I will make a KZbin showing the tools I used for patternmaking. Most all of them were made by me other than my skews. A great material for scrapers is Stellite. Leaves a great burr after sharpening and holds a decent edge. But when your turning something 4 foot or more in diameter you visit the grinder often. Maybe I can use my cellphone to create a video to describe the tools. Gary

ThePapa1947 My Oneway bowl gouge is a 5/8" "Mastercut" series. The flute in it is definitely more of a rounded, or parabolic shape. It is one of their unhandled tools, and it's actually a double ended bowl gouge so I can take it to the grinder without the handle and get two sharpenings in one trip. Or you can have two different shapes but I prefer having both the same and just flip it around when it starts getting dull and it's the same tool still. It's in one of their handles which are quite heavy which is good for larger Bowl work to dampen vibration and such. When I last ordered tools from Oneway, Susan told me that the "mastercut" series are the ones that they make themselves, and that the "oneway" series is actually made for them by a manufacturer in the UK. I think I have that right. She said the steel is slightly better with the mastercut tools so I stuck with that, but not sure how big of a difference it would really be. The smaller Thompson bowl gouge in this video is actually a v-style flute but I have a different grind on it so it's hard to compare the two. Many turners who use a swept back grind like on my Oneway usually recommend more the parabolic flute. Great idea with dating, weighting, and reading the moisture on the bowls. Sounds like you have a nice variety of bowls drying now! I would love to see the tools you used in patternmaking. I have never heard of stellite, must be a really good tool steel I'm guessing. But like you said on a 4 foot diameter project, you sharpen often regardless.....that's over 12 feet of wood each revolution! Haha
