Smoking pipes is getting rare. 30 years ago, lots of people did it, i remember my grandfather with a pipe. Nowadays, its really rare with only a few old people still smoking pipe. Im not a fan of smoking at all, but a pipe has a lot more style than anything else. Your pipe is so nice that i can imagine how proud the owner would show it of. Very nice job. It reminds me a bit of the clay pipes that historically were produced in the town i was born, Gouda. Long stemmed clay pipes. I always liked that design.

Thank you Willem!! I know those pipes, I've seen a whole documentary about how they are made, interesting history as well! I also don't smoke a pipe, but I sure do love making them! Which woods are best for the bowl?
@yuvallahav8 жыл бұрын
Well, the best of the best would be Briar root, which is imported from Italy. Alternative woods are Olive, Cherry, Mulberry, Walnut (which is kind of controversial, since some species are poisonous), Apple, Oak and more.

I plan on giving it a try. Wish I had easy access to some nice olive wood bigger than a pen blank. Sadly, it is difficult to find at a reasonable price here in southern California.
@yuvallahav8 жыл бұрын
Well, there are many alternative woods for pipes, while the "best" wood for the job is Briar root (which is expensive since it's rare and comes mostly from the south of Italy, a small single piece could run you up 20-100 dollars), while alternative woods are many, among them are Cherry, Olive and Walnut. Between you and me, the Olive looks the best, but the Walnut taste the best when you smoke it (and the first couple of smokes will always have wood taste, until the inside of the bowl is well charred, while professional pipes come pre charred).
@anklebiterwoodworks28188 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. Had no idea. Will have to give the Walnut a try: got plenty of that. The oak you used for the stem, did you just get some veneers? How did you get them so thin?
@yuvallahav8 жыл бұрын
I had a plank of Oak, about 5 cm tall (2 inches) and 20 cm wide (some more inches) and I cut a piece of it 30 cm long (about 12 inches) and I started slicing it in 2 mm wide slices on my table saw using my sled, risking my life and fingers in the process... if I had a bandsaw it would have been much simpler. If you can get a thin (but not too thin) veneer slices, use those, why not!

Cool project, Yuval. I never even thought about making a pipe... A tip, which you are of course free to disregard :-) Use a wooden handscrew clamp (two wood jaws, two screws in opposite directions running through threaded pivots in the jaws; the jaws can be tightened non-parallel) to hold stuff on the drill press and bandsaw. I've accumulated a bunch over the years, and modified them by drilling holes through the centerline so that each jaw has a half-circle cutout or by making "V" notches in the jaws at right angles to or along the length. I can firmly clamp about anything with them. Clyde
@yuvallahav8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Clyde, I've been meaning to make some of those clamps for a while now, I'll download some plans and make some, hopefully by the next time I have a project that needs drilling. Yuval.

Yuval Lahav Woodturning clever. I just made my first long stem pipe. The pores on the stem after sanding are visible. Will definitely try the oil before sanding trick. Thank you for leaving a great tip in the comments.

I like the design for the bowl having a lower chamber. how does it smoke though? have you tested diff diameters to see if the draw changes?
@yuvallahav3 жыл бұрын
I have to say I haven't tested different bore size fo the pipes, I use a standard 20 mm paddle drill bit these day, then change it if I feel it's too large, or for smaller pipes, if a little different and I normally do it by eye, to be sure the wall thickness is enough to let the inside get a good char layer, and be wide enough to allow good thermal insulation on the outside... and it's smokes pretty good, or well enough to be called a useable pipe. Lets be honest, people would normally smoke pot in these, and they aren't really concern about these miner issues... Yuval

Would Hickory or Mesquite wood be good for the bowl, instead of olive since I live in Texas
@yuvallahav6 жыл бұрын
I have no idea Andrew, since I've never worked with either of these woods and do not know if their smoke is toxic or not... When in doubt, simply don't use it, you wouldn't want to poison anyone... Yuval
@Elkrid6656 жыл бұрын
The woods are mainly for meat smoking, the smoke isn't toxic. I just have never tried them, and thought you might have tried once or twice

Get some carbide burrs for your dremel itll make shaping alot easier! Also, if you dont mind sharing, how much do you sell these for?
@yuvallahav8 жыл бұрын
I could really use some good burrs but I simply can't afford them, maybe Santa will send me some (and a band saw!) for Christmas! I don't normally sell my work, but I did sell about 10 pipes in my town's last year Christmas fair, and I sold them for about 25-50 euro, depending on size and shape, a pipe like this would have sold for 35-40 euro, and I can tell it's under selling them, I should have charged more. Yuval.

Fantastic, thank you. If I do ever end up setting up at a craft fair perhaps I would add something like this to my inventory. Thanks for the inspiration, I honestly thought making a pipe would be much more laborious and tedious. The stem glue up trick is fantastic

How does the Oak stem keep its shape if it wasn't wet to start? Bend dry wood? I thought it had to be steamed?
@yuvallahav4 жыл бұрын
if the wood is thin enough you can bend it without steaming. The different tension of the layers of wood help keep the sape in place. Yuval

How did you deal with a moisture in the olive wood? The olive wood I have is from Rome, and is sealed in wax. I’m afraid to work it too hard and afraid to smoke it risking it cracking from moisture.
@yuvallahav6 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm working with Rome Olive wood (I live 25 minutes outside of Rome), and I never had a problem, the wood is so danse, that even after drying, warping or changing is minimal. Olive wood takes years to dry. I had pieces of Olive 10 and 20 years old that were still moist in the center. Yuval

@@yuvallahav How long do you dry it? I'm from Croatia, Isola di Pag, we have plethora of Olive threes. I'd like to start pipe woodworking myself ! Love your videos :)
@yuvallahav6 жыл бұрын
The ready pipe will dry out if used constantly but it will also absorb humidity when not used. As Olive is so dense, it doesn't warp much. Thanks Tomislav!

Cool project Yuval . I like the way you made the stem , the wire was a good idea .I'm not going to ask what you're planning on smoking in it lol. Take care.
@yuvallahav8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Glen! Some people do it without the wire in the glue up and then try to push the wire in to clean up the glue, which sometimes is impossible, this way, you know your hole will be clean all the way through. Don't ask don't tell ;) Yuval.

Thank you buddy!! I'll be making a follow up as soon as I could squeeze some shop time where I'll make a different style of everything, bowl, stem, boring, shaping, texturing and I might even venture a different wood if I'll find a large enough piece of Walnut in my scraps pile, just to show the variations you can have with a fun project like this. Thank you Paul! I really hate sanding, if I could automate it completely I would, trust me :) I used Mineral oil, both for the pipe bowl and the pipe stem. Yuval.

I live in the American South West, And I have always wanted to try making a pipe from Mesquite, a very hard wood...but not sure how it would perform as a pipe material...if done right the wood could be beautiful.
@yuvallahav2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it could be beautiful but if I'm not mistaken, Mesquite is toxic. I would make sure what type of Mesquite you're using, and google it with "toxicity" and you'll get the information you need, if it is in any way toxic, don't use it for the stem or the bowl, unless it's going to be purely decorative piece. The rule of thumb is "if you have a doubt, there's no doubt". If you're not sure it's not toxic, don't use it. Hope you make a beautiful pipe!! Yuval
@sectureverothoughtcriminal77342 жыл бұрын
@@yuvallahav Not toxic, some people get allergic reaction if stuck or scratched by the thorns...and the thorns could have been "contaminated" by animals etc...but the would, and bean pods are safe. Some people even chew the pods because they have fructose and taste sweet. When dried can be ground into flour...

A nice video to smoke a bowl of herb to. My only gripe is the way the pipe stem was made. I wonder how safe the glue is for smoking purposes. Personally, I would make a straight straw out of a single piece, then steam it, insert the wire, and then press the bend into it. Just me being picky. I don't want even a remote possibility of the glue offgassing due to the heat of the smoke. I'm sure the seed oil is safe, though. Thanks for sharing!
@yuvallahav7 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey Stephens Thank you Jeffrey! Those are some good issues, and I agree with it all (good video, smoking a bowl, glue problem, steaming), and it's only just recently I was able to buy some thin, very long, drill bits, so I will try out that method. Steaming wood be the hardest part to do, since I don't have a steamer, but I'm pretty good with my hands, I'm sure I'll manage something :) I will.put it all in a video, of course. Yuval. Yuval.
