Red cedar is in abundance here in British Columbia Canada, my neighbour gave me some logs out of his camp fire pile & I made some nice red cedar vases out of it, free wood!

Gorgeous looking vase Ian. I have some Leylandii in my log store from two huge trees we had to have cut down in our garden. The trees came down about 7 years ago so if I'm lucky there will be some I can put on my lathe. Take care Ian. Cheers, Huw

Look forward to seeing how they come out mate! Quite a nice wood to work with and ridiculously lightweight! Hope you’re well Huw.

I think all wood has potential to be a family heirloom or end up in the burn pile, some of my favourite pieces come from my annual firewood delivery or branches that break off in storms! Great work!

Leylandii is absolutely suitable for turning but also somewhat prone to cracking. This vase looks nice, with an inspirational shape! 😎

Thank you very much Leo! To be honest I’ve only had good experiences with Leylandii, even turning wet none of the pieces have cracked or warped! I’m sure one will at some point 😂

Cypress, maybe not the posh type, but there are many things to be said for that family of wood. Finished up great, as a light colored wood, still managed to give the impression of depth.

Definitely an under-utilised wood, pleasure to work with & comes out quite nice, very light in weight too.

Hi Ian lovely vase you made it doesn't look cheap elegant vase, why did you put the top bit of vase in a bag with wood shavings good video and camera work by Lady or man
@IanMacWoodturning3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jean! I put the piece of wood back into the shavings to stop it from cracking as easily, this is because the shavings are also wet so it’ll help stop the piece of wood losing moisture too quickly.. in theory! 😂

In my book, cheapest wood is free, delivered to my place, and all ready to go on the lathe. Any thing that requires cutting or hauling first means I have time invested in it, any we all know time is money! 🤣 Nice turn, and the two part for hollowing worked out nicely.

How you dry it without cracks?
@IanMacWoodturning3 жыл бұрын
We use various methods.. with varied success haha. The usual steps are things like sealing the wood numerous times during the turning process & leaving it in a bag of chippings to keep it from drying out too quickly. Sometimes you may have to leave it thicker in order to turn down once it has dried a little and on other occasions you have to deal with the cracks and either make them a feature or try and fill them. There are lots of other tricks & methods but the ones listed above are some of the ways I try to reduce cracking/warping.

Ian, absolutely love the vase, but for how long can it be filled with water ? And all that massive amount of wood shavings, is it used for anything ?
@IanMacWoodturning3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! It should be good for a long time as it was sealed on the inside with epoxy resin! The chippings are mostly thrown away but I want to find more uses for them
