First some housekeeping. Since KZbin won't let me link more than one previous video in this video, The only one that has a popup link is the sharpening video. The rest of the videos I refer to can be found on my channel. You can hunt for them, or you can just check the links below.

Now that I have that out of the way... This video is truly a trash to treasure story. The wood for this piece was obtained from a tree that was blown down during a storm here in PA. The storm, according to the National Weather Service, was just some heavy winds. I'm definitely no expert but this happened right around the corner from where I live. It sounded like a tornado to me. If you ask the locals in the most damaged area, they'd tend to agree with the tornado assessment. Needless to say it was a big blow. Sometimes a 'big blow' sounds like a good thing. But in this case, definitely not. Trees were scattered everywhere like someone tossed a box of toothpicks on the floor. Now I didn't actually toss a box of toothpicks on the floor to get the comparison. I'm using my imagination and a little bit of poetic license. Ok, it's true. I tend to exaggerate a bit. If you ask my friends they'll tell you I tend to exaggerate like a billion times more than most people and I've been doing it since before the world was created. True story! I mean that's totally believable right? I think it's about 1000% accurate.
Anyway, I write these silly descriptions to kill time. It takes KZbin like forever and a day to upload and verify a video. There's like a billion checks to make sure the content meets all the KZbin guidelines. I guess that's why they make the big money. The people there have to eat too right? Ok, that's enough for now. I have things to do and places to go (not really, but it sounded good right?) No one reads these descriptions anyway so I guess it doesn't really matter what I type in the description...

Thanks for the feedback and Thanks for watching. Here is a link to the Elbo 2 hollowing rig video. KZbin wouldn't let me add two links in the same video so I put the link to the hollowing rig in the description. Enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5yzqnV9mq5pgbssi=VBnKLOD8VelCjOty

Great video, amazing craftsmanship, and beautiful piece. Do you have a preference to hollowing end grain or side grain? Is one easier than the other?

Thanks for the kind words. Regarding end grain vs side grain, I don't think one is necessarily easier than the other. The only notable difference for me is the ease of clearing the shavings. End grain shavings tend to be more dust so they clear easily. Side grain shavings tend to be more ribbons and can clog up a bit. There are differences however in aesthetics over all. This piece is a good example since the heartwood is a distinctly different color than the sap wood. The way this blank was cut my preference was side grain. This put the heartwood (and the color) at the top. If I would have turned it end grain, the color on this piece would have been split in half with the heart wood on one side and the sapwood on the other. I generally have a vision of how I want the piece to look before turning based on the blank and how it was cut. I position the piece on the lathe based on how I want the finished piece to look. As far as preference, I tend to do tall narrow pieces end grain and short wide pieces side grain.

Awesome as always, Scott. Just curious roughly how much time it took for the rough work -- turning and hollowing?

Shaping the outside doesn't take very long. Deciding on the shape takes longer. Refining the curves takes longer still. I'd guess that the majority of the shaping happens in about 30 minutes or so. Refining the curves could take another 10 minutes or another 40 minutes depending on how happy I am with the profile. Hollowing generally takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the size and shape of the piece. This piece in particular took about 70 +/- minutes for shaping and hollowing
