Hi Phil, it has to be said that a true piece of fine Artwork began to evolve from the first moment you began to put your gouge to the piece of spinning wood. You handled this piece of wood with great sensitivity for the word 'GO' & with such clarity id your commentary it was as though each person to view it was almost creating the piece under your direction. You are a Master of your Craft & I feel you could turn any piece of rubbish into a fine work of Art. It is truly beautiful in every way you look at it. Thanks for a beautiful 20 minutes as you brought this Masterpiece to life. Stay safe, keep turning & keep entertaining we mere mortals. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

Always the spalted looks great , and you are right about being cautious to preserve the woods potential. I once cut a slab of fallen cherry from my Tennessee farm , careful to save slightly spalted burl , I cut a 6 inch piece of the burl for knife scales and later discovered that the 3 inch discarded piece had the most beautiful purple grain swirl . I could have kicked myself.

Another nice bowl. I get inspired to see you find ways to mount these odd-shaped blanks. I have all kinds of triangular blocks sitting around that I haven't turned because the mental picture hasn't come yet. By the way, Beall makes drill-mounted cloth buffing balls - you might be able to use them for buffing these odd pieces. If you can use your sanding disks, you should be able to use the balls.

@dennisbeamish90585 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil == very nice and instructive as usual. Sanding: I noticed when you were sanding with the 2" disc, you were at about 11:00 o'clock and in reverse. Some time ago I watched a video on sanding (forget who it was) and his recommendation was to run in reverse but sand at approx 7:00 o'clock (bottom 1/3 of the piece below the equator). So - I tried that at about 400 RPM - and I find it easier and a better finish than I was getting before. I am certainly NOT implying that I use a better method as I would never question your expertise -- but, I would like to know your thoughts or wonder if you have ever tried that and of course your opinion and reasoning. As always thanks so much for sharing your talent. Regards Dennis Beamish Cambridge Ontario Canada
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Dennis, glad you like it! You suggestion may very well be a really good one. For me, with the kind of pieces I turn, like this one, I find just trying to get a good angle without the sanding shaft or the drill getting hit, is the most important thing. Next time I sand something that doesn't have protrusions sticking out all over it, I will give this a try. Anything to make sanding easier is a good thing! Phil

Great looking piece Phil. You can take anything and make it look good 👍 I just watched your review of the jet lathe you have . I am in the market and looking. Is it still doing well for you? Any more cons to add to your pros?
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Michael, I really appreciate that! No more cons and the ones I did have about this lathe turned out to be almost nothing. I used a piece of double stick tape on the rubber mat and it hasn't moved in two years. The tailstock handle is not a problem, got used to it, no big deal. I just really love my lathe! I think the prices have come down since they were first brought out. I think I would consider the 1840 DVR model, one step up and very little money difference. The main advantage to that is no belt change needed to go from one range to the next. It's all one range. In fact, it may not even have a belt, I'm not sure. Hope that helps! Phil

Phil, it is kind of weird but it always amazes me how you make these incredibly beautiful pieces of art from whatever folks send to you. Amazing! By the way, when you sign your work, I assume that you use an art type pen. How long do you wait after you sign it to put on the finish over the signature? Thanks, Paige C.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paige! Thank you! I just use an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie, and I let it dry for a couple minutes. The trick is, I only apply wax over the signature. Most everything else, as you probably know, makes the ink run. Phil

Thank you, Dave! I use an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie and apply wax over it after it dries. Phil

Phil where did you get the sandoflix looks like something I could use

William, I used to sell the Sand-O-Flex when I worked in a retail hardware store 40 years ago. I never see them in stores anymore. I've bought a lot of them from eBay but you have to be careful of the pricing. You should be able to get one for about 35 bucks if you are patient. But, there is a newer plastic model. I think it has an advantage because it is lighter and easier to handle in a portable drill. Those can also be had on eBay but again, the price is often higher than you can buy new. Here is a website where you can order a brand new one along with refills: supergrit.com/products/products_woodworking-sandoflex Hope that helps! Phil
