As a woodworking hobbiest, I can appreciate the small work shop. In May of 2023 I suffered a stroke. I am now making over my small shop and the shave horse is a welcome piece. Two years ago I built a vise less work bench and bought metal hold downs that will do the job just fine. Thank you for this easy to build project that will be used for many years. Also, thank you for the videos you put out. I've learned many things over the years watching your work.

There's lots of nice little ideas in here. A simple fast-acting clamp, and a vise make this concept pretty universal.

Wow, thank you! This is the best part of the internet. Sharing human ingenuity. I've been watching a bunch of shave horse videos, and this seems like it might be easier to use, but also save on wood. Nice!

Thank you so much. I am looking forward to building this for my shop and getting down to work on various parts of spoon carving as well as other projects to tackle. Very clear, carefully worded instructions were much appreciated - well done!

If you saw a notch in the underside of the head, it'll grip your blank a lot better, and prevent it from moving side to side. Very nice idea, and it folds away too!

Aloha ! Becoming an Un-plugged Woodworker from a near death accident, I now tend to revisit the woodwork of my family's past. The bench top shave horse is a needed addition to my stable of ponies. In the past 40 years of woodworking, I've made furniture pieces for many folks around the world if Koa wood from here. Being so stout and heavy, I can only imagine how those early woodworkers did their work safely.

Great video. You should think about making a feature length version showing all the cutting, shaving, drilling, gluing in its entirety. It’s fascinating watching you work.

Great idea, perfect for my hobby shop where space is very limited. This even worked outside. I clamped it to the deck stair, after pushing the dowel up tight against the step. Grabbed a seat and made some dowels. I replaced my bird house/hotel (8 rooms) perches using a couple of pruned apple tree branches. I love the rustic look it added. I also used all scrap hardwood for my build as well, so it’s totally free! Thank you, 👍🏼👍🏼 from this guy!

@@HomeImprovementWoodworking Sure thing, just as soon as my sis returns it... she’s loving stripping long vines making a braided trellis garden entrance with it for a winter project.👍🏼 Some ideas are just too good not to share😉 Best I can do for now is send the bird condo so you can see what I mean... thanks again and Happy New Year! I’ll send one now

You always say you want to teach us things we did not know. 1) two surfaces of glue (still not sure why) 2) paint brush handle for getting in the hole. The hardest part of this build is finding a source for Ash in my area. Not the type of wood easily purchased in a urban community. Been a problem all my life. Getting different species of wood other than pine at the big box stores. Thank you.

Hi Bruce. You can substitute another hardwood for the Ash. In my region, Oak is in all the big box stores. I hope that helps. Scott

Very nice explanation & instructions for a device that is very useful, glad you posted this, I can use one of these. Not any room in my shop for a traditional shave horse, and even if that wasn't the case, I would use this so infrequently it would become a nuisance anyway. Thanks for posting.

I have the exact same woodworker's vise, it's even blue just like yours. It's also a piece of junk like I suspect yours is. Sometimes it takes two hands just to open it. I hate it, although I still have it. However, I've since built two Moxon vises and the foot-powered vise by Izzy Swan. If you haven't seen it you need to check it out. My next project is to build the regular bench vise like we usually use with metal and general duty that John Heiz built on his channel. Also, I bought a set of tap and die for wood and both my Moxon vises have wooden screws. Well sorry about this long comment, I really enjoyed this video and I plan to make the portable benchtop shave horse soon. Enjoy and keep on making these great videos.

I like the simplicity of this benchtop shave horse and I would like one for the shop!. I have a regular-size shave horse I made from a log a friend gave me. It has a home outside but can be moved inside if I want to. I am using a grill cover to keep the rain off of it and surprisingly it works great for this purpose. It is made from a cedar log with an ash foot press and head mechanism. I did give the entire thing a coat of sealer just in case and after 3 yrs, it still looks the same as the day I made it. I was going to get the plans for this just for the angles you used, but at $21.00 for a very simple project, I decided not to, sorry, but WAY overpriced.

Agree with your the price comment. I regularly purchase pdf plans offered on KZbin video's, but $10-11 dollars US is the upper limit for my budget. The idea for this design of shaving horse is clever and practical.

Sorry to hear that. Based on what's available for niche plans on line, this is below the average price from my research. It's a balancing act between costs (1x production, online store costs, hosting fees) being able to offer helpful products. Thanks for the feedback. I understand your perspective. Scott
