Thanks for including the Hedgehog featherboard in your comparison. I appreciate your scientific approach but was sad to see it finished in third place. A couple of things I'd like to point out: 1. When you're adjusting the Hedghog, it's better to place it adjacent to the board and then rotate it into the board until a couple of the fingers/feathers are flexed and then tighten it down. If you adjust it before inserting the board, it will rotate out if you've got it turned into the board too much. This can be particularly helpful if you're cutting a board with a rough, uneven edge that you're trimming off - if you start with the narrow end of the board first, the Hedgehog will rotate out as the board gets wider while still maintaining pressure against the fence and providing kickback reduction. Traditional featherboards simply jam up in that situation. 2. If you overflex the feathers, the board will be rubbing more against the back of them which reduces the bite required to reduce the ability to pull the board back toward you. 3. The Hedgehog is molded of a toughened, engineered nylon resin from DuPont. Obviously, it won't survive being cut by a spinning saw blade but the cuts won't result in shattered shards like cheaper commodity grade resins. My company is tiny (no employees) so I rely much on organic posts from folks like you. I'd be happy to send a replacement Hedgehog if you'd like to explore it further. Thanks, Brett.

@9:38 That single up the middle was pretty impressive! I have the mag switch feather and use it simply because it's so easy to adjust. I mean 10-15 seconds doesn't sound like a lot, and it really isn't. But it doesn't accurately measure the annoyance level. Especially since often, you're holding something in place and using one hand to adjust. Love the magswitch featherboard.

I use feather board whenever doing repeated cuts or ones need to keep tight tolerance. But I’m too cheap to pay for them so I made them out of scrap plywood. They work flawlessly. It will be extremely ignorant to allow your feather boards to be cut like on video. So I must say I can’t think of a scenario to relate to it. My personal experience is that any feather board regardless of pull force (15lb or 50lb), if used carefully it will prevent kick back. It drags down the board as it was kicking back to keep you safe. I use it more for alignment / cut quality than anything else. Safety was a bonus.

The only thing this is missing are the super expensive Magswitch ones. I personally just use the traditional ones, as my router table came with two of them, so I use them on my table saw as well. If I was flush with cash I'd definitely buy some bow ones to try them out, and some magswitch ones as well. I think that for 99% of people, the $15, or whatever it is, Powertech ones is plenty. You can get two Powertech ones for the price of one bow. Being able to stack two of them is really convenient for certain table saw cuts, bandsaw resawing, and then to have one on each side of the router bit in a table. Good video.

Seems like a Hedgehog that had the Bow style foam teeth on it would be the ultimate design. If it started to pull back, the foam would grip the wood causing the entire featherboard to rotate, and due to it's shape it would act like a cam engaging, and eventually the only "give" it would have would either be the physical structure of the featherboard breaking around the bolt that holds it into the miter slot, or the rip fence being bent outward.
@DTJ3689 Жыл бұрын
I don't think so as any device that relies on a single point such as the hedgehog is inherently less "stable" than the devices that have two points. The single point acts as a pivot point upon which the device can circle or rotate.

Although hard to really compare with these traditional featherboards, I use Jessem stock guides for two main reasons... Firstly, they remain on the fence side of the cut, and hold the workpiece down & towards the fence and usually do not need readjustment with each cut. Secondly, one of the pair is actually on the far side of the blade to further help control the cut and reduce kickback by keeping the piece held down. They are without doubt the best accessory I purchased, but pricy of course! I still have a traditional one like the Powertec you show - really only used for cuts when the Jessem will not fit between the blade and fence.

I ordered and just received today a package of Two Feather boards from Amazon which advertisers 4 table saws bandsaws and routers. The problem is the total words from the left side to the end of the feathers he's only 3 and 1/4 inches. This featherboard will not reach anywhere near the cutting blade on my table saw. Did I do something wrong other than not measuring the distance from my miter track to my blade comparing it to my table saw? I've seen these on television all the time and there's no distinction that I've seen between the size of the featherboard. But it still boils down to the fact that I felt it was misrepresented and maybe not intentional. However the description clearly says for table saws, Etc. I suppose I should just return them and best time to do my homework ahead of time instead of relying on Amazon's application of these feather boards? Thank you very much and I love your show

Good video, thanks for sharing. I will say that my experience has been different. I have a traditional featherboard (from Rockler) and have always had difficulty getting it to stay put. I usually have to tighten each knob with two hands to keep it from moving. I got a Hedgehog and it has worked great for me, no movement at all and only one hand required. I wonder if the different saw (and miter slots) might be the cause of our differing experience.

Thanks for the comments, Matt. I fear that since Taylor Tools was involved in this video and they sell the Bow featherboard, that the conclusion was pre-determined. I have no evidence of this but the Hedgehog was demonstrated to be much less effective and competent than my satisfied customers would attest.

I initially got the Powertec when I got started, but found that I needed to wrap the miter bar in blue tape quite a few times to get it tight enough to lock down on my Dewalt DWE7491RS and not slip when doing cuts. The Bow was a night and day upgrade, and I really love it. No blue tape needed to get that to lock down nice and tight. Understanding that it's only giving horizontal support and not vertical, it's still quite a bit safer than the plastic-only options.

I use one standard featherboard pushing towards the fence and two featherboards pushing down from the fence. No way am I going to spend over $70 for two Bow units. Good standard table saw practices and this setup have worked very well. Kickback tends to come from ignorant setups and careless practices. Although I enjoy your video tips on woodworking, I'm surprised at your efforts to scare us to the Bow.
@CordellWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Love your videos but while I agree the Bow is best, I think you did the Hedgehog a disservice by tightening only one prong against the board and then pushing through (causing the spinning). If you place the board almost to the blade and get a bunch of prongs tight to the board, you SHOULDN’T have had these issues (possible poor quality assurance not withstanding). I never have the mentioned issues with my hedgehog. That being said I asked Santa for a Bow for Christmas 😊

Great review Matt, I like the foam one. The following is tangent to the testing. Couple notes on how I enhanced my Hedgehog. Add layer or two of tape to the sides of the miter slot lock. I used hockey tape*. This drastically improved movement in the slot. Add some thin rubber (I used some old bicycle tube) between the yellow part and miter lock and the washer. This helps keep the hedgehog in place. In my opinion these slight changes improves the product greatly. Not sure why there little bits of material were not here in some way from the start other than to keep cost down. Without them it was nearly unusable for me. With them it is great. *I follow Rob Cosman. He uses hockey tape for stuff now and again so I put i in my arsonal. Another good option is carpet tape. Colin Knetch seems to use that from time to time. That might work better than the bicycle tube.
@featherboards15652 жыл бұрын
Lincoln, thanks for the comment and for the feedback. It sounds like you've solved the problem but for miter slots that are loose, you can try two things: 1. Holding the Hedgehog in your hand, tighten the knob A LOT which helps flare out the miter clamp. Sometimes that's enough. 2. If that didn't work, you can flare out the miter clamp by inserting a flat screwdriver into the gap in the miter clamp and giving it a twist. It doesn't take much. Brett

I own the green one. The biggest issue I have is that some saws have very little space between the front of the saw and the blade. I actually found it VERY hard to use because of this. Seems like the hedgehog might be the best because it only has one tie down. However, I do prefer the green one because it is foam and replacing those would be cheaper than buying a whole new unit (if the plastic teeth break). Just my humble two cents.

You state that the foam feather board allows the wood to move a small amount before really locking in and yet you still use the force numbers from the first movement. You should use the numbers from when the feather board fully engages because this is the true resistance to kickback.

Great review! I especially liked how you setup your tests to get empirical data out of it - even if your final conclusion felt more subjective that strictly based on the data - but I agree with your conclusion so you won't get any argument from me (I use a Bow featherboard and love it). One other advantage of the Bow featherboards that you didn't mention (but you did show it), is that the foam feathers can be replaced when worn or damaged. In the case of the Powertec and Hedgehog products (as well as most hand made featherboards) you have to replace the entire unit.

Featherboards are what I call the ideal woodworkers' tools that was bought but never used. Honestly, I don't see woodworkers taking the time to do the proper set up with any featherboards as they take the place where your left hand should be there to guide the board. Featherboards only apply side pressure but does noting to hold the board down. In the ideal world, yes we should use jigs to support our work but people are too lazy. I have trained students (age 10 to 84) in my shop for years without the need of featherboards or gripper push stick or fancy gadgets to do proper rip cuts on cabinet style 3hp tablesaw. Proper training with a procedure I created prevents kickbacks and cuts

For example the one hose that came with the vacuum is too small for my 10" kobalt table saw, when I want to use it I literally have to push it inside my saw until it gets tight. I'm wondering if you have some sort of "be all end all" solution for this, I saw a few attachments on amazon that seem to be rubberized and kinda grip around any size attachment points but I'd just love to hear your thought and opinion on the matter before I go out and buy anything.

Bryan, as I (designer of the Hedgehog) commented above, if you adjust it before inserting the board, it will rotate out if you've got it turned into the board too much. I hope you'll see other video reviews and Amazon reviews that are more positive. Brett

Appreciate your attempt at scientific comparison. Don’t want to be spoil sport but these tests are flawed in the following ways. 1 - no featherboard will prevent kickback if the board is so short that it no longer engages with the featherboard. 2 - The point of the bow is that the teeth will move back to engage and prevent kickback - you measured the point when the boards first moved which is not the point.

I have the hedge hog. I like it BUT you have to put a few layers of ac duct foil tape on the expanding slider. I think I put on two or three layers. Then when I tighten the knob it’s rock solid. It shouldn’t have to need the tape but once you add it it works as advertised

Looks like the hedgehog could possibly perform a little better on the other side of the blade. On the right side of the blade the pressure from the wood may slightly tighten the knob. On the left side of the blade it has a counter-clockwise loosening effect.

I say take a traditional featherboard and coat it with Plasti-Dip.

I would have been too nervous to do that test with my Sawstop! Afraid I might accidentally set it off at the cost of a new brake and blade! 😫😫😫

If the hedgehog had some sort of spring tension, you wouldn't need to adjust it AND it would increase holding pressure the more the board was kicked back
