If both surfaces need to be exposed, this is a semi-poor joinery method. If one surface is concealable, metal plates and screws are tens of thousands of times more rigid, stronger and cannot expand and contract as wood DOES. Wood joinery was the only method possible say two hundred years ago. Modern adhesives and metal construction plates have made wood joints as obsolete as a halberd vs: a semi-automatic rifle. The shown joinery with PLYWOOD as the spline would be ten or twenty times stronger and an epoxy adhesive would prevent moisture movement. Do you wanna show-off your joinery or make something strong and durable???

1. Grain runs alongside the spine. You can just snap that. 2. End grain glue-up...
@glennryzebol4472

No, it will be quite strong. Typically, you don`t need the spline at all for an edge-to-edge glue up but it is helpful for alignment and the spline adds additional glue surface to mate the pieces and will add strength. It`s a good joint. The second one is hot useless trash. I agree with you there
