In the ER session preshow Woolie went on a fairly exhaustive discussion on why he doesn't do things like shitstorm, or take part in general October festivities, largely calling it "white people shit". But now being forced to confront an unknown threat he's perfectly at home with the rest of us. Makes for good content.

Honestly, Miyazaki was nice to us. Only six lanterns and they DO NOT respawn. Once you learn to parry them, you never have to worry about them again. Though watching Woolie read "Backstab don't work", then immediately try it was on brand.

Fun Fact: silence is definitely stealth, to such a degree that if you enter Gaius's boss arena wearing something that silences you, he will not aggro and just calmly mosey around in the trees instead of charging you.

The Abyssal Woods has this interesting factor: you don't know where to go. Even the starting path splinters off. You could forge ahead to find the map piece, but even then there aren't any noticeable landmarks on the region's map. Everywhere else in Elden Ring, you can at least see landmarks that might indicate where progress is. Here? There's not even a side quest directing you there, so you have no expectations.

The Abyssal Woods causing Torrent to refuse to come when called is a neat detail that reframes the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending. After the player burns everything around him, Melina shows up to pick up the whistling ring from a pile of ash. Said pile of ash is more than likely what's left of Torrent, as the Frenzied Flame is capable of burning even the spirits.

What I find interesting is that nearly every player I've seen tries to fight the Winter Lanterns head-on without parrying, despite the dev messages explicitly telling you that you CANNOT fight or run from these things (even if the former is technically a lie.) In spite of that, so many people either try to backstab like Woolie or charge the Lantern well before finding the note.

@@Tungchu92 To be fair, some people play offline to avoid message overload, among other things. I should know, I'm one of them. So I went through the entire bloody forest with my nerves balancing on a razor's edge because I DIDN'T know there was a way to fight back against them. I assumed that there MAY have been some kind of trick or exploit, but I didn't take chances and used my years of practice playing Metal Gear Solid to save myself a lot of unnecessary deaths, whereas my fighting game addicted cousin nearly destroyed his PlayStation over the ordeal because he kept trying to brute force it and, like me, chose not to play the DLC online for the first week.

Did a similar thing by using Assassins Gambit and the Black Knife set to sneak around them. Works pretty well if you arent a magic user. (Character was a Dragon communion user)

Certain words have meaning outside of the game Lore. Inquisitor is one. Inquisitor should be viewed like a "class", like knight; as there are different Knight Orders, there are different Inquisitorial groups. So while all Inquisitor have the same function, to look for heresy and stamp it out, the concept of Heresy would differs from Religion to Religion. The Golden Order had Inquisitor and the Hornsent had it's own. A Golden Order Inquisitor would see Hornsent beliefs as Heresy to be destroyed and vice-versa.

These woods just weren't scary for me. Without the messages I wouldn't have known they were supposed to be. It's too bright. Darker and foggier would have helped the Lanterns a lot. I'm thinking yellow just isn't good as a spooky color. Yeah, I know it's a King in Yellow thing, but it didn't work for me here. Less Abyssal and more nature park.
