It's a clever defense, the equating lootboxes with Kinder eggs. But it kind of falls apart when you remember there's no Kinder egg salesman sitting in your living room 24/7, waving the Kinder eggs under your children's noses while going "eh? eh?" and nodding towards your wallet.
@EviIPaladin
@EviIPaladin 5 жыл бұрын
There's also the issue of equating digital goods that are locked to an account to physical goods that can be sold on a secondary market. If you wanted a specific Kinder Surprise toy, you can go to eBay or Amazon or whatever. The same cannot be said of loot-- I mean, surprise mechanics.
@Byzas000

At this point I expect EA to just go to court with this argument, fail (hopefully) and thus create just a gigantic precident-case (I think that's what it's called) which in turn kills any kind fo Trading-card-type product in the west. That's the only way this can go at that point and, honestly, I wouldn't mind. I'd much rather have similiar ruling s like how these kinds of products are handeld in Thailand. The TCG "Cardfight: VANGUARD" for example gets shipped in two ways over there. You can still buy booster-packs just like anywere else (with special foilings and whatever else), but you can also go out and buy so called "Display-Decks" which contain every card of a new expansion-set once and only costs a little bit more then a regular starter-deck. They don't have any kind fo special foiling, but you are guarenteed to get every card of that set once which means you just have to get 3 friends to buy one as well and everyone can give the cards they don't need to somebody else while you get everything you need in full sets. As you can guess, only the players from Thailand get those, atleast for now.

@@SergioSource "It's just cosmetics" is the literal argument used to justify the creeping death of microtransaction hell. You choosing to disregard this doesn't change that TF2 is the reason the "games as a service" phenomena and the state of the industry as a whole exists as it does today, but sure, you're totally not enabling the predatory behavior of companies by excusing children being introduced to addictive behaviors at a young age, not to mention that no, it's not just cosmetics, TF2 was filled with unique weapon varients that had active effects and abilities that straight up gave you advantage over those who did not partake in lootboxes.

@@SergioSource At the end of the day if you allow children to play your game with gambling mechanic it's on you. Any game with gambling in it should be an automatic M/18 rating. *THEN* you can argue that it's on the parent, because it is! They didn't respect the rating. Most publisher won't accept a M/18 rating because it reduce the target audience unless it's some ridiculously big properties like CoD. TF2 has the right rating in North America but it is a 16 in Europe, which means it technically promote gambling to minors.

You could just ditch the hobby/pasttime entirely. It's the people who are wrong, I say. They let themselves grow to attached to a form of entertainment. This is why my grandparents forced me to learn how to enjoy a lack of entertainment, and find "fun" in work. They did not appreciate how focused I was on my game boy. It helped. Boring as hell, but at least I always see "I can leave" as an option.

The only times I defend anything close to loot boxes is: you can only use in game currency to buy it (horizon zero dawn) and or you can only earn them through playing the game (Arms & overwatch if you play arcade and level up) besides that I want them Fucking GONE

I still don’t see how it’s gambling. Doesn't gambling require the possibility of losing? Loot boxes always give you something, even if it all is total crap.
@pmw1993
@pmw1993 5 жыл бұрын
I think the legal definition is more than that. Otherwise casinos would always give you 5¢ back on a losing bet and that would make them legal everywhere
@wolfdemexico
@wolfdemexico 5 жыл бұрын
Could be. It's complicated by the fact that in some lootboxes some of the items are consumables and not persistent acquisitions in the game itself. And for that matter(and this is literally a question because I have no idea) what is the standing of things like Magic the Gathering and Pokemon cards? Are these regulated as gambling? If so that would make sense because they function on the same principal as lootboxes. If not why are lootboxes considered any different? Is the fact that prizes in a lootbox are non-material important to the discussion?
@pmw1993
@pmw1993 5 жыл бұрын
@@wolfdemexico Also unsure about that. Maybe because receiving a physical object opens it up for resale? Cards and other blind box items have value and can be sold/traded unlike online lootboxes.

Dapper Changeling That’s my bad for not being specific enough. Kinder Joy is different. Kinder Joy are more of a dipping food. You peel off a tab and there’s a creamy filling and a little spoon that you dip balls of chocolate in, where as Kinder Surprise is a hollow egg with a capsule and toy inside.

You can beat Let it Die for under 60 dollars in a not wildly unreasonable amount of time. I think it is a bad game with a toxic frustrating difficulty wall after a while, but it is worth noting when it is brought up in these discussions that it isn't 100% built to just bleed you of money. And for the record, yes I did beat it (although if they added content since its launch I haven't kept up with it).

Australian State governments are very into gambling. Pokies (Slot Machines) are in pubs/clubs in sll but one state, we have more pokies than even Macau/Monaco. I've read stats that say gamblers loose an *average* of $3500 a year to the Pokies. They are a major cause of social problems in the areas around them, but the governments won't revoke the licences because they make bank on the taxes from them. Its the gambling they don't profit from that they will slap down hard. Lucky for us, EA's profits all get shifted around to avoid tax so they won't be able to hook the governments the same way.
