Feels no different than taking your thumb off the face buttons to use the right thumbstick on PS2. Shoot on your preferred trigger. Then I put all my powers on the ABXY buttons instead of having to gamer-claw the D-pad. Bam. Able to run, aim, and shoot all at once, or let go of the camera briefly to fire off a power.

@@evendrag6302 I don't even disagree with him about the Vita - that back touchpad has caused many a wrist cramp because you're not allowed to touch 80% of the back of the console - it's one of the reasons I actually bought a PSTV back in the day. I'm just saying he goes from complaining about a design choice causing you to hit buttons you don't mean to, to listening to Woolie describe a design choice causing him to hit buttons he doesn't mean to, and responding with "well just don't hit the button, then." I know it's a bit and I'm not taking it serious or anything, but I feel Woolie's energy when he resigns himself to "Yeah, okay, Pat's doing THAT THING again."

Nah, I'll stand with Pat on this. While the Vita's back panel was an innovative way to add more controls to its small real estate, it came at a massive cost to ergonomics as you are now forced to hold it from the edges which comes out maybe an inch away from the back plate on both sides. So if you were to have experience with literally any other handheld it makes sense that you might have some gripes about having to learn how to hold the vita like you're L reading braille. Which is why those controller prongs exist so that you can basically turn your vita into a dualshock 3.5. And Pat is right to tell Woolie to "just don't hit the button, tho." L3 and R3 have been the standard on controllers for over 20 years at this point.

Ok, so a few things about this. Lately i always praise games that let me remapped the buttons. Why? Because games like dark souls ask for me to relay on running holding a button and prefer to have that button on X / square / Y so a can rest my thumbs without gripping my hand all the way to the right. Maybe my hand got screw from others things on my daily life, but it works. The same playing things like megaman x games or apex legends, where a prefer have my jump and dash / crouch buttons in a line of \ so my thumb can press them at the same time without losing momemtun or get interrupted in the middle of the action. The thing with pressing the stick by accident, specially the right stick where the camara functions normally are, is frustrating to activate some animation you dont want (specially if you want to handle weapons recoil in apex) , so i prefer to disable it unless its a mandatory function that is used frequently. I've about had it with the PS4 controller. My hands feature long-ish, skinny fingers, which don't fit too well on the dualshock which shrank from the previous generation. On top of that, the touchpad is so sensitive and so close to the analog sticks that the tip of my left thumb will often graze the corner of the touchpad so lightly I literally won't feel the contact myself, but the controller will decide "swipe" and put me into an unpaused menu during a fight. Then an overwhelming majority of the time I try to use the touchpad for cursor control it feels janky, and it won't register half the time I intentionally try to use a swipe to open a menu. Having more buttons and controls is a neat concept and all, but imagine if all of the center console controls in your car were built into the driver seat - shit's all there but the moment you move your foot from gas to brake, your thigh is activating your emergency lights and swapping between am/fm radio. This needs to stop. Make controllers ergonomic again. Edit: My memory was distorted, please ignore my perception of the PS4 controller being smaller. It was pointed out to me by a friend, however, that the PS4's analog sticks have a notably smaller travel range than on the PS3, a smaller physical radius at which the stick stops, leading to worse control fidelity. I think this may have been what was tricking my perception, but also why I've been struggling so much more regardless of sensitivity settings (aside from probably not being in my prime anymore).

I swear, Pat talked about balancing on the pinky and I LITERALLY just pulled out my OG 3DS to hold it like I used to for Kid Icarus: Uprising. Balance it on your pinky? The corner of the thing, and thus the majority of the weight from the right half, rests on the corner of your palm out from which your pinky extends, and the tip of the pinky itself rests right in the centre underneath, not for balancing, but for pivoting -- again, the weight is on a chunk of your actual palm. Furthermore, your ring finger curls around the R which doesn't actually get used in Uprising and supports the middle of the back of the top screen. I keep hearing stories about how this game gave people hand or wrist cramps and my hands INSTINCTUALLY MOVE INTO THE MOST COMFORTABLE SHAPE FOR HOLDING THIS WITHOUT STRAIN and I just cannot find the power in my soul to believe that they were not either somehow holding it horribly wrong, or have actual toddler-sized hands. For frick's sake I used this exact holding style to hold the OG NINTENDO DS for Metroid Prime: Hunters, and that was WAY chonkier than the first 3DS. I had hundreds of hours in both of these games and never suffered anything even remotely resembling a strain in either of my wrists. I sometimes had to put the thing down for a bit because my hands/arms were tired, but that happens with literally every controller ever. My hands aren't even big. Many people point to KI:U's inclusion of a stand as somehow being proof that it's got awful controls, but I never once used that seriously for that game -- rather, to the contrary, I actually found that attempting to use the stand made the game considerably less comfortable than resting it on a desk or leaning back and resting it on my abdomen. And you know what? I found the globe-spinning function to actually be a NATURAL EVOLUTION and DIRECT IMPROVEMENT OVER of the FPS crosshair control that Metroid Prime: Hunters used.

Agree with the claw I'm 40 born with arthritis in all joints so my hands are fucked I can manage Souls games but stuff like the combat in guardians of the galaxy I actually had to quit that game it just wanted way too many prompts during combat asking for like 4 different things at once whilst moving your own character, shooting, jetpacking just too much.

Woolie, a man of nuance and depth: I think lack of empathy in design shows up in hardware whenever the game forces you to do THE CLAW. Whenever a game requires you to continue to manipulate the stick, while pressing the d-pad, while continuing to press buttons on the other side of the controller as well. Me, a rage-fueled intellectual: *FUUUUUCK YOUUUUUUU ASURA'S WRAAAAAAAAATH!!!!* (I love Asura's Wrath, but holy fuck does it hatefuck you with button mashing.)

Really that's a button mapping problem, not a hardware problem. Too many developers are afraid to put their button maps in unconventional places, or just put them in the conventional places out of habit rather than considering how they'll actually be used. Honestly since dual analogue sticks became a thing, your shoulder buttons should've become the main buttons with the face buttons being resigned to stuff you shouldn't need to do while/directly before and after moving your character or the camera.

Pat simply cannot understand the plight with his tiny baby hands. As someone who also has Big Hands, puny controllers creak and strain under my grip without even trying. I understand the pain, Woolie. Pat's baby hands just can't compare.

Agree’d, third party cheap controllers from online are the worst cause they just disintegrate at the smallest pressure. Its also why I never vibed with the ps2 controller, it feels too tiny in my adult hands. Meanwhile people say the Duke was too big and it fits in my hands fine.

I could be woolies right stick has actually been worn down from lots of fighting game inputs and is more liable to false clicks in the stick as a result. I'm curoius if he would have the same issue on a fresh controller.

With Elden Ring, I prefer playing with an Xbox controller cause the D-pad is right below the left stick; therefore, is closer to my right thumb, so I can use my R thumb to switch out items while simultaneously still moving around the left stick with my left thumb. I can't do that with the ps4 controller since the D-pad is at the far left on the controller.

It throws me ALL the time when I complaints about controls, because I don't have those problems, and the reason is *because* I have a controller with back buttons. Not needing to remove my thumb from the right stick gives me such an advantage.

Chocobo GP is already a trainwreck, but one of the awful things about it is the default controls has accelerate on A and the character special ability on Y, on a Switch controller. To even play the game adequately, you have to use the third control preset which puts accelerate on R. DmC DE had a similar issue with its lock-on, but still having a dedicated dodge button. To be locked on to an enemy and do the red Demon Dodge, you’d be holding two different shoulder/trigger buttons and pressing a third. Any game that has you have to hold more than one shoulder/trigger button at a time should have its own mechanics reexamined.

Im with woolie on the torrent thing its too sensitive. I wouldnt even click it id simply just move to the left without pressing the button (no audible click) and it would register that i did, and my character dismonts, not so much on the ps4, but the ps5 seems to be way too sensitive.

@@BbNaB still doen't change the fact that it's annoying and has gotten me killed multiple times, either from dismounting while fighting a dragon or crouching randomly against any other enemy. also there is such thing as dead zones where it doesnt register in game till you press it in past certain point. for example call of duty doesn't register R3 or L3 until there is an audible click.

I have long but pretty dainty hands, and Woolie's super right about accidental L3s. For me, it was mainly on the WiiU gamepad. 7 and 1 inputs would cause me to put a _hair_ more weight on the stick and make me crouch at stupid times. Also, the way to survive Kid Icarus Uprising and any other 3/DS action game is to put your stylus away. Seriously. Just hold the system normally and treat the touchscreen the same way you'd treat the right analog on a Dualshock. Trying to play KIU with a stylus is trying to eat pizza one-handed _with a fork and knife. Screw the utensils. Just pick up the pizza._ Run with analog, aim with thumb on screen, shoot with your preferred trigger, _and for the love of god_ move your powers to the ABXY buttons instead of the D-pad. All fixed.

I genuinely don't know what "the claw" is. Any time a game wants me to use the d-pad and the left stick at the same time like Elden Ring, I just quickly move my thumb to the d-pad before going back to the thumbstick, instead of trying to contort my hand into some weird ass shape
