WOOLLEY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - Haigh village extends across to the other side of the Beck, railway and M1 into Barnsley district. That is where you will find Haigh's parish church. The Barnsley part is unparished. It split away on the 31st March 1974. Woolley acquired the part that runs up the hill. - Haigh was its own civil parish until 1974 and shared a parish council with Woolley - At Hallowe’en, Woolley Grange gets renamed “Ghouly Grange” and all the street names turn Hallowe’eny! - Haigh Beck is the District boundary - In 1974 , the metropolitan district boundaries took precedence over the existing boundaries. As a result Haigh was given the option to become two parishes. - Because it already shared a council with Woolley, the Wakefield part of Haigh transferred to Woolley outright leaving the Barnsley part with too small a population to form a parish

My family comes from this parish. We go back to 1060's (written in the Domesday, older family history unknown) from William and the Normans conquering England. Some of my ancestors migrated to the US and started lives here later on. I'm an Ooley, and one of my ancestors was named Woley, but went by the nickname "Ooley", so that stuck. The Woley's were from Woolley, but originally they were Normans and spoke French. De Wolegh is the original origin name and is in reference to the land given, the Wolf's Glen, or Wolf's Clearing. The Normans were Vikings, who adopted French customs, so i'm sure there is history going back to the Nordic countries, but no written record I've been able to find prior to The Domesday Book.

Just a little note Haigh village actually extends across to the other side of the Beck, railway and M1 into Barnsley district. That is where you will find Haigh's parish church. The Barnsley part is unparished. The 'snip' happened on the evening of the 31st March 1974. Woolley acquired the part that runs up the hill. Until then Haigh was indeed its own civil parish but sharing a parish council with Woolley, similar to Upton and North Elmsall still do to the East: 2 parishes 1 council. There's I believe another example: Huntwick with Foulby & Nostell and Hessle & Hill Top. And that one I think includes West Hardwick as well. (Nostell Parish Council)
