For thousands of years the land of Ulster has always been distinct from the rest of Ireland, both culturally & historically. Native Britons (Celts) have continuously moved back & forth between Ulster and Western Scotland, long before the plantations, and so what the Irish would call "British" genes have always been around in Ulster. A good example is the Dal Riada who had land on both sides of the water. Like it or not Ulster has ALWAYS been both British AND Irish

Its wrong to say that the English did this or that. It was the Westminster goverment who were responsible, not the ordinary Englishman. Another thing, it wasn't Englishmen who gave up the three lost counties,but Ulster unionists who realised they couldn't hold 9 counties for any length of time. In the 1800s Home Rule Bill it was the English MPs who defeated it. The Scots and Welsh voted for it. I say all this as a loyal Ulsterman. The truth must prevail
@seanreillyireland15 жыл бұрын
Well said. The south's losses were terrible as well. And they were damned because the political climate had changed so much between 1916 and 1919 that they went off as men doing their duty, and back as "traitors". Along with the child abuse thing, this state, my state, has an awful lot to answer for. I am only stating to realise now that it is as a gentlemans club, with all our history books geared to justify it, and its nepotistic politics. Well said though: nice comment, no bitterness.

The Ulster Division deserves to be remembered for the sacrifice it made out of genuine loyalty to the United Kingdom, but this song is an insult to them, to the point where one could be forgiven for thinking it was written by a Sinn Fein troll or a communist trying to work up some kind of divisive scam. I am Northern Irish and proud of it, three generations of my family WW1, WW2 and the Troubles have served in the British Armed forces, and never once did I ever hear any relative of mine or anybody else for that matter express the sentiment that we were fighting England's wars. Yes, I too believe that some British politicians and 'Yes Minister' types stabbed Northern Ireland in the back and did so more than once, but people like that do not represent the United Kingdom that I loved any more than this awful song reflects the sentiments of Northern Irish veterans. As for the Northern Irish being so resentful of the so called 'Englishman' that we were no longer prepared to leave home and serve oversea, that is demonstrable, propagandist rubbish. No way should this song be used as an educational resource. And in conclusion, I remember from personal experience the decent young Englishmen who put their lives on the line in Northern Ireland. And lets not forget that an astounding number of Irishmen from the Republic have served with distinction in British Army uniform. As one Australian WW1 veteran once said to me, 'We were all in it together.' Amen to that.

It wasn't Haig either. Northern Ireland borders were agreed on by Carson and Craig (both Irish born). I also take issue with the claim that WW1 was 'England's problem'.Ulster volunteers fought as British men (afterall that is what the whole trouble was about pre war.). There were a number of factors which motivated men (inc Ulstermen) to enlist including patriotism, peer pressure, propaganda etc. Ulstermen never did anything at an 'Englishman's command' and it is disparaging to suggest they did.

Interesting footage. I recently visited the grave of my Great Uncle who died on July 1st and is buried at Thiepval - he was 19 years old. This song is dreadful. It associates 'Flanders fields' (Belgium) with the Somme and suggest 1916 is in the 'early days of WW1' - 1916 was the midpoint. Those are just two of many dubious assertions -It serves the memory of the fallen poorly to misrepresent their slaughter in such a song.
@steveljub12 жыл бұрын
Nonsense - at what point does this talk about Flanders specifically? My great grandfather fought from 1912 actually but the slaughter was exemplified in 1916 when millions died and cowards back home in Ireland rose in rebellion. In 1912 this division was raised and then in 1914 we were threatened. 1916 to 1918 was the core of the war. Have you even listened to the song?

I hate the way that the Scots and Irish blame the English for sending them into battle in WWI, as if somehow it wasn't their fight. Do you honestly think the Germans would have just conquered England and stopped? If it wasn't for our combined efforts, we would all be speaking German right now, whether you be in London, Glasgow or Dublin!
@GarngadLoyalists10 жыл бұрын
You've every right to hate it mate, a catchy tune but the lyrics are factually incorrect.
@williamcooke562710 жыл бұрын
Do you think the Germans would have conquered England at all? They would have had to get past the Royal Navy first. In 1914 the German government tried desperately to *avoid* war with Britain. Britain declared war on Germany, not vice versa: supposedly ti save Belgium, but really to save France.
@teehee160410 жыл бұрын
William Cooke The declaration of war on Germany was officially to protect Belgium, but in reality, the British couldn't possibly have allowed the Germans to take control of Europe. If the British didn't intervene, then the German empire would have grown powerful enough to overwhelm Britain. You seem to forget that the German navy did a pretty good job of blockading Britain's ports anyway. In fact, by early 1918, it was looking likely that Britain would be starved out of the war. If they'd have held on for much longer, the Germans would have had an easy task of taking over.

@tullyDT How does Home Rule work when you have thousands of heavily armed loyalist Protestants marching through the Streets of Belfast opposing it in 1912 and the British Army Officer saying they won't enforce the Home Rule Law? There was never going to be Home Rule, and the British Government was never going to implement that law.

burnleyfan - Churchill's many and checkered decisions can (and have) be debated, give the many his due: in 1916, he was on active service, in the trenches, commanding a battalion of the Royal Scots. I know of no other major politician (at the time) from either side, who spent months in the trenches.
@calumroney73526 жыл бұрын
tim biggart just to correct you in that Churchill commanded a company of ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS not the Royal Scots. They were two different lowland Scots Infantry regiments who predominantly recruited from different parts of the lowlands with the fusiliers coming from AYRSHIRE.

I'm from the South and I'm fed up of all the republican propaganda those bastards spat on the memories of deceased family members of mine for almost a century calling them traitors. Despite what they would have us believe the majority of Irish people in the south only wanted a home Parliament they were content to remain in the Union any objective history book will tell you this, if Maxwell hadn't botched his response to the rising I doubt the rebels would have gotten any sympathy.

what you saying , englands decision ?? last time i looked it was the british government with both scots,welsh and northern irish MPs sitting , the british government couldnt win either way, home rule was on the books during victorian times , each time thrown out by ulster protestants and unionist mps,,after ww1 , the unionists threatened revolt and all out civil war , so ulster was partitioned to save a greater civil war breaking out ,,in 69 the british army went in to prevent all out violence
@WolfeT201616 жыл бұрын
That's may be the view in the North of Ireland among people in the Orange order but does not represent the view of people on the British mainland. More Irish men served in both wars from the South than the North - more Victoria Crosses have been awarded to Irish men than any other nationality.
@songsmith31a13 жыл бұрын
The Irish and the English have been inextricably linked over many centuries of blood and sacrifice. Many commanders at the top level of the armed services and politics have blood origins in Ireland - think of The Duke of Wellington and others. Irish officers have thus commanded the English as well as vice versa. The Irish Guards and others still bring pride to themselves and the armed forces of which they are honoured and admired members.. and the UK armed services.

Ulster could not sustain things on her own . And you have to think that if Ulster went independent from either England or Eire we would have to get our own passports currency and what not . We would be sucked 'completely' in by the European Union on our own as we would have no bargaining power whatsoever and that would just make things worse for Northern Ireland . In short we could not survive as an independent country or state . Plus if hostilities were to resurface after independence we may even end up as a non-entity and even if we survived countries like the US England and Eire would not want to invest or trade with us because our economy would be awful as would the possibility of civil war . So, no, northern Ireland / Ulster is too small and too insignificant to survive on it's own . Outside of Northern Ireland the rest of the world could care less and we should always remember that . They may say they do but they will always follow the money and what benefits them and that is the cold hard facts of the light of day

the three "lost counties" of Ulster were not included in Northern Ireland because the nine county Ulster had only a 55% Protestant majority and a workable majority of 65% was obtained, with the collusion of the Unionists, by making Northern Island a six county state. It's ironic that today that six county state has a 55% Protestant malority and it's expected to have a Catholic malority by 2050 and therefore be able to vote themselves into a united Ireland
