Just a little correction, the buffalo warrior Indian that Glass befriends was seeking a new beginning because Sioux Indians had killed his people, not white settlers. Other than that, great review! I took away the same message when I saw it.

Thank you Bishop Barron. I was so upset watchingbthe Tragedy, Betrayal, Brutality, And Revenge in this film I could not handle it. It prohibited me from seeing the true meaning of the film. What could be more relevant today? I think the majority of People today have sadly become far worse than any animal. We have become by choice a Godless People choosing Sin and Evil openly. I could not have envisioned a world this upside down in my worst nightmares. Yet I am greatful that for the Grace of God and my Mother raising us with strong Faith I am now a minority Jesus and Mary loving crazy person by the world's view. Please pray that I may perservere to make it home when God wills it as everyone I loved has been called home by the time I turned 42. God Bless you for all you do for so many. I keep you in my prayers.

for me this movie talks about caring for children, bear guarding his babies, leo cares for his son, indian searches for his daughter, and God sacrifising his Son on the cross

Bishop Barron, always enjoy hearing your thoughts on religious topics and even movies from past and present since I'm a big movie geek. Just curious, since you've talked about Star Wars in the past have you seen The Force Awakens? And if so would you discuss it? Very curious to know your insight on that one.

Very compelling Bishop. I must admit when I watched this movie with my wife it did bother me. It was very violent. As for myself I did not like the movie. But you helped me put it into perspective. God Bless.
@blablabubles9 жыл бұрын
+Joe V I find it strange when catholics object to a movie as being 'to violent'. Catholic literature has always been utterly gruesome, I mean take Dante or O'Connor for example. Or even the Bible for pity's sake! Confronting evil in the world is essential and the reason good literature has to vividly detailed and outlined it is because Christ has shown us on the cross that it is through the depth of suffering that grace and redemption come into this world. There is no Ressurection without the Cross.
@joevigneri21509 жыл бұрын
I never objected. I said that I did not like it. I said it was very violent. I never said "to violent". I agree with you about Christs suffering. Very true!

I think it should also be noted that when Glass let Fitzgerald drift down the river, it wasn't out of forgiveness. There was a band of Indians waiting within sight down the river who had their own score to settle with Fitzgerald. And, it did get settled.

I really really was waiting for your thoughts about this movie, I know this is no material for everybody but I really liked the movie from start to finish because it seems to me like a very spiritual film. You gave great points, like that when Glass covers himself in bear fur and intrinsically transforms himself in "a" bear looking for revenge... I was expecting more from you for the destroyed woods/church in ruins scene cause to me there is the breaking point of the movie in the form of Glass walking in the middle of two worlds: that of the indian nature and that of the christian white man religion, In the end Glass understands that "being" a wild animal looking for revenge will not give him peace, the pawnee had understood this before and even Fitzgerald with his twisted mind told him this. Only a religious spiritual man can get to this understanding of life in a world full of violence and far away from the deeper philosophies/reasoning of the civilization...

I would love to see your grace do a video on Cormac McCarthy's 'Blood Meridian' or just McCarthy generally. I saw a lot of the themes of his writing in this film. It seems they're drawing attention to the same thing. For McCarthy salvation seems to come from the land itself and from the immutability of the earth. He seems to be grappling with the problem of pain and trying to find an answer sans the resurrection. Big fan of your videos, always well thought out and well argued.

I wasn't sure about this movie but now that I know more of what it's about I'll try to go see it. Sadly the renunciation of revenge is a value counter to our mainstream culture. It will take more than a movie to move our society in a more positive direction.

Mr. Bishop Bobby Barron. i am not a Western Universalist (Romam Catholic) or am Eastern Russian Orthidox or part of a Cult like Mormons or J.W.'s. I am, however, a Bible beliveving person. A Christian. I disagree with much of your arguments. Philosophy, Theology, Traditional, personal, Subjective, Objective, etc. etc. Ok. Now having said that, i want to express my gratitude for your work and your KZbin channel. I did not think that a Roman Catholic, let alone a priest, pastor or even Bishop, actually knew or have permission to think for himself. Your videos have seriously made a massive impact on myself and many others whom ive shared your links and vids. I recognize you as one of the greatest Apologists of our scarcly, Bible-Iliterate post-modern times. I thank you. please keep up the good work...even if someone like me dissagrees from time to time.

If anyone is interested in this movie but put off by the extreme graphic violence, I"d recommend MAN IN THE WILDERNESS, starring Richard Harris and John Huston. It's basically the same story, although they change Hugh Glass' name to Zach Bass, but it also uses Glass' story as a reflection on vengeance and forgiveness. The bear attack is pretty intense, but not as graphic, and the rest of the action is handled in a more typical style.

The Revenant?? Nothing on Spotlight?
@FranciscoSmirsley9 жыл бұрын
I'd say Spotlight is explicit on its contents whereas The Revenant needed a "reading" and hence the post; unless you're being obnoxious and hinting at the fact that Spotlight is not being approached cause it touches a sensitive issue and that is, I'm afraid, not true as Bishop Barron has voiced his opinion about the child abuse case.
@BrotherWoody19 жыл бұрын
+MobiusCoin It seems to me that "The Revenant" can be seen as a gloss on "Spotlight". Predators, prey & revenge---the scapegoating of the entire Church & the Pope.
