Cruising As Crew

Hey sailors
When working on a cruise ship you will be open to a whole new set of words.
As well as learning your job role, learning your way around the ship and learning the safety procedures onboard, you will also have to learn, effectively, a new language.
In aims to make this a little easier for you, in today's video I go through some of the words you will hear on board and what they mean.
When I first joined a cruise ship I had no idea what all this meant, so I spent a lot of time being confused as I was shy to ask someone. So just in case, you are in the same situation as I was, here you go…the basics of the weird and wonderful cruise ship language.

Having worked on ships for 16 years it is I - 95 at NCL and M1 at Cunard. Another thing is that a boat can fit on a ship, but a ship can't fit on a boat. Port is left, both are 4 letter words. Sometimes new crew or even experience crew that have joined a new ship get port and starboard backward when pointing or telling someone directions because they are not facing forward, so they are backward. You forgot that forward is the pointy end . Another term that is used is "banana". It is nice to eat a banana but on board not good to GET a banana. To get a banana on board is to be in trouble.

My favourite term was "mangiare". My supervisors used it when they sent me for lunch or dinner. It's an Italian word and it means eat/food. Also, you can say " A ship can carry a boat, but a boat cannot carry a ship."

The wake isn't just behind the ship, it is any wave generated by the ship as it moves. There's usually also one that comes off the bow. And a boat is defined as that which is carried on a ship. A lifeboat is carried on a ship, for example.

A knot (nautical mile) is longer than a statute mile because the ocean curves. Thus, one travels further in a nautical mile on the surface of the ocean than one travels on a flat surface on land.
