Former curator of Kenwood House and trustee of the Friends of Kenwood, London, Jerzy Kierkuć-Bieliński gives an online talk on ‘Work & Play in 18th Century Childhood’.
Kenwood House, London, boasts some of the most spectacular portraits of the 18th century, including examples of aristocratic and upper-class children memorialised by artists such as Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, George Romney and Thomas Lawrence. By way of contrast, in this talk Jerzy explores the development of education and pastimes for the rising middle-classes in the 18th century, using the portrait of James Wolfe at Quebec House, near Chartwell, as a springboard for a wider discussion.
