I always thought my dream job was being a lawyer, but when the pandemic hit, I realized that an intense career no longer aligns with my priorities. I'm working as a lawyer now and trying to be grateful that I'm employed and have reasonable work hours. I have no idea what the next step is for me - maybe I'll be a lawyer forever. It doesn't make me miserable, it just doesn't feel like "me" anymore 🤷🏼‍♀️

You’ll find your solution. I was a trial lawyer (both public defender and prosecution at one point) with a very hectic and grueling schedule. The pandemic and a surgery last year opened my eyes and pushed me to pursue other practice areas. I’m now working in house counsel. Work is still stimulating but with better quality of life.

Maybe it doesn't feel like you because you detached your identity from being just a lawyer, you're a person that happens to have a degree and work as a lawyer but that's just a part of you.

I work in digital marketing and I “love” my job because it pays for my home, my hobbies, and is flexible so I can travel. It’s not super stressful and I can sign off on time without the world ending. In that sense, it’s my dream job, because it does exactly what I need it to do. I’m happy I. The mundane. I’ve never been driven to have a “dream job” and I was always jealous of people who did. Now I’ve learn to love the stability and know I’m so much more than my job
@SelenaTrevino

Oof this was so good!! And same! Except i used to be super career driven and I’d say in a sense I do still get stuck in a cycle of wanting to find what job would bring me joy… but maybe I need to find more joy in the mundane.

SAME! I quit my job to find a remote job and I am so much more happier. No commute, I get to work in pajamas with my dogs all day. Work now just feels like a tool to pay for my home and support my hobbies.
@Kaikive
@Kaikive 2 жыл бұрын
Yes to quiting a job being a privilege! My current job is not my dream but I have bills to pay and I need a job because I also have to help out my parents. It's a desk job but it pays well, can be boring but I am thankful for it. You need to do what you need to do because I don't have the chance to stop working. I've been working the second I turned 18 just to make it by so when people bring this up, I'm just like, well some people literally cannot survive without a job. Also, not saying people who quit are bad. If you can, then go for it. It's just important to remember that it is a privilege to have that many do not. I got my degree in communications (and a masters in PR which is definitely not needed and idk why I did it lol) and I do side jobs and more project based stuff just to keep my portfolio up to date.

Yes! Quitting a job is a privilege, and sometimes it's an incredibly important one. I left a physically abusive workplace almost 10 years ago, and ever since then I've made having a "fuck off" fund a priority. It's hard, and sometimes it's been a lot smaller than I want, but it's been critical peace of mind for me knowing that if a boss becomes abusive then I can walk out and never return.

I love to watch someone who works a full time job besides KZbin. I prefer realistic & relatable creators like you! My work from home set up isn’t aesthetic because I have to use company provided equipment so my “office” is my walk in closet haha. I work in finance & it’s very stressful & I cry a lot, but it’s good money. With these ridiculous Florida rent increases I need it! My dream job is in broadcasting. Capri Blue Volcano is my fav….I have the matte black right now. They make great containers for cotton balls, stevia packets, etc when empty too.

Same here, Kelly. As someone who also is learning to manage depression and anxiety, I get the biggest sense of accomplishment when my bed is made, dishes are washed, and clothes are put away. My scattered brain needs that sense or order and the repetition of those tasks allows my brain to quiet down again.

I fully agree with you that you don’t have to love your job!! I’m a 3rd year teacher so I’ve only taught with COVID but I’ve struggled a lot more than I’ve hoped to. I think going into a career that’s such a passion and that your heart is in so much it’s really hard to realize you don’t LOVE it. There are parts of my job I absolutely love but a lot of it is honestly pretty bad these days (especially for the pay). I always advise people that their jobs don’t have to be their entire life bc often with teaching, nursing, stuff like that it really does become your life when you care so much about the people you work with each day

Selena, greetings from LA! I love that you are so relatable. Most KZbinrs do “KZbin” as a living and people who watch them are trying to vicariously live through them, I think with you people are able to relate to you since you work a normal job and live a pretty normal life as well. I love stormy days, especially in the summer. They remind me of Puerto Rico. I love your take on self-care. I've always found the concept to be kind of privileged tbh. Not everyone can shop and take baths (or whatever people do) at a whim. I see self-care the same way you do and I was explaining this to my husband who tells me I need to chill for once because I'm always doing something. I'm always doing something because I'm doing all the things that make my life easier, less stressed, and make me happy. If I have a laundry list of things to do and/or I'm neglecting my health and fitness, my mental health is going to crash. I feel good when I'm caught up with work, homework, my diet is on point, and I'm working out 3-5 days a week. Shit I feel like a superhero! That's MY self-care. Occasionally self-care is spending the night playing video games not gone lie lol.. but as full-time employee and student, those nights are few and far between these days sadly :(

Highly relatable! I enjoy working as a nurse and love that I can express my love for health and wellness through my job. But what was once a dream, I feel I am less passionate about being a nurse and more focused on helping people in other ways. I don’t know what’s ahead but faithful that what’s ahead will become more clear as I continue to walk in purpose. A transition is happening, in due season 🫶🏽

I then went into education started working my way up but then burnt out very quickly and realized I prefer more of a work life balance so that’s where I am now!! 🤗 I’m currently a part-time teller and it’s what makes me the happiest right now. I love having extra time to do the things that I love and focus on my mental health etc. In the future, I might work my way up in banking but right now I’m enjoying the soft life lol ❤️

I love your videos. I am 45 and it's so inspiring to see Latina's on social media. You are so honest about life and it's so refreshing. I am a paralegal and have worked for the state I live in for 17 yrs. There is no perfect job. I think work is the same as any aspect of our lives. There are days or moments that are neutral, moments or days that are great, and times where things aren't so great. But I am truly grateful for a job that gives me benefits, retirement, vacation time, sick leave and sick family leave. It's rare to land a job like that. However, I am all for optimizing one's life, it doesn't have to be a job that makes you miserable for you to want to do something more in alignment with your strengths or more "deserving" of our limited life force and energy.

I enjoyed and agreed with your views on self-care! As someone who is also working on their definition of self-care, I find that mindfulness and perspective is everything. If I am self critical, I notice that I have a harder time getting things done. However, if I am more compassionate with myself, I have an easier time and am happier with my little accomplishments throughout the day. :) Keep up the great work!

I'm in my mid-30's, and after two decades in the workplace I've decided what counts as "dream job" for me: A career that's interesting; that has more that I enjoy than dread in the day-to-day; that has good compensation, benefits, and generous PTO; that has some in-person interaction (I can't do fully remote, I hate it); and that has a respectful work culture. My emergency fund is big enough now that these have become deal-breakers for me. (If I had to drain my emergency fund, then I'd prioritize pay and respectful work environment.) Right now I work in HR, doing compensation analysis for local government. I'm a fellow depression-haver and I'm really glad I found your channel! Your thoughts on self care definitely resonate. Skincare is self care, but so is taking my medicine, maintaining good sleep hygiene, and going to the dentist 💀 Thanks for the company while I do my makeup in the morning!

I just discovered your channel, I love your vibe and style of content creation. :) I'm also in the DMV area! I currently work in campaign finance compliance, and I definitely relate to what you're saying - the job I have now allows me to live a comfortable life, and that's so invaluable. And I do appreciate helping a 'greater cause,' for whatever that's worth. But it's definitely not my ideal career, or what I want to do with the rest of my life! My "dream job" is to be a fiction writer (and a Twitch streamer lololol), but that's something to work towards over a long time, so in the meantime I'm gucci with the 9-5 gig.

Sometimes I feel guilty cause it seems like nothing make us feel happy even when we know we are lucky. I studied civil engineer and work in construction, and I know that what I am doing is cool but I am always tired and stress, I guess as long as we try to find the purpose of what we do, things are going to continue moving. 💕 I hope you feel better in regards your depression and one day you can enjoy the rainy days🎶🎶 I will love a Q&A video too.

my current career IS my dream... but it's not my full time! I create content but mostly on a free / for fun basis :P and then I sew clothing! I have a small clothing store in Uruguay because there was a HORRENDOUS lack of inclusive options here regarding sizing especially! BUT as well as that, i teach english online for money, AND highly specific content to a different website because it pays really well! So hopefully by next year i can transition to doing what i love full time and still paying my bills, but that's just not the reality now so i'm grateful for my other jobs too, even though i find myself exhausted a lot of the time!

I am a bookkeeper now and honestly, I do love my work, but at the same time I don't dream of labor. I think I enjoy the finance aspect more, so I want to start leaning into financial advisory and financial analysis. I completely relate with your thoughts on hustle culture/productivity. 100% I try to approach productive things as is this something future me will need/Thank me for or is do I feel pressured to do this just because productivity. That helped me a lot! When I was in uni I got into calender blocking and I would schedule my life when showering eating etc because that's what my mental health needed at manage all of the things of uni and working ft now - that's just way to much so it's fair to say we change! I always wanted to be a nurse or hairdresser. I left school and did hairdressing/beauty for 8years. Then I transitioned into medical, a Dermal Clinician which is the similiar degree as nursing in Australia but a hybrid it would be similar to a physicians assistant in the states - all the Cosmetic lasers lasers skin stuff. It's not the end of my career just another phase I love my job and you made me realise my life is my job and I need to create a life outside of that! I returned to study and am doing.my masters I want to stay in the Cosmetic medical world but more in an operational business role! I think going back to school is a great idea!!

I work as a program manager for a non-profit. My dream job used to be a meeting planner, but my physical health conditions have made that difficult. I am also thankful to have a steady WFH job that acxommodates my health, but it is not my dream job. I give 100% while at work, then am able to clock off and enjoy other hobbies and aspects of life. I don't have a fancy title or big responsibilities, but I believe in our mission and am realistic I couldn't handle a full-time event job right now. Thank you for normalizing this and reminding us we are more than our jobs/work!

I loved this whole video, I had to play you back when you went into saying how self care can be a little bit glamorized… because I agree. I also feel like you, little things bring me peace of mind, and are self care for me too. Something as simple as miking the bed, is just… NICE!!! Loved this video!! Yessss. Definitely agree with you regarding self-care and funny enough, a habit I created a few years ago was making my bed immediately after getting up. Once I'm up, that's it; unless it's the middle of the night to use the bathroom or whatever lol. I no longer have to think about it, I just do. It's an act that's become part of my daily routine. And I find peace coming home at the end of a long day to a fixed bed!

For me, I realized in university that it was my first priority in life to be happy. I couldn't do a job everyday that I wasn't happy with. Because of that, I'm not making as much money in my chosen career as I could be, but I feel fulfilled and happy everyday. That being said, I am now also starting a 'secondary career' being a makeup artist! I have always loved makeup, and my journey there is starting to take shape! Im also of the mindset that you may have several careers over your lifetime and that there's seasons for everything :)

First of all, I love your content sooo much I never get bored ! Concerning having a dream job, my opinion really changed growing up. I used to wanna be a business woman and dedicate my life to my job. But now that I’m older and that I actually work in the marketing field, I just want to live a simple life, work from home on my own project. I also hate the fact that we have to work 9 to 5 when I personally am more productive in the morning ! I’m looking forward to your back to school content 🥺 Take care xx

i've been in and out of school for years trying to find my "dream" job. i've been a server during that time for about 8 years now and recently realized that i have no career aspiration other than to make enough money to support the life i desire. that's why i stay as a server and most people say to "get out while you're young", but it's a job i don't LOVE but i don't hate either, im great at it, and it supports me enough to live the life i want. it's much more flexible than most other jobs so im grateful for it!

than you for sharing your thoughts on this. i definitely had a phase where I was convinced that I had to find my "purpose" in a job. the thing that would make me whole and make a living. and that's just not where I am anymore. for many reasons, but mostly because there are a lot of things that make me happy and they are ever changing and I don't necessarily want them to become my job. also, I do need and want financial security, and i know it comes from my history and background, and I am no longer ashamed of it. it can be so hard to have that type of mentality when you are surrounded by very privileged people who can just go and do whatever they want anytime. I always remember that they'll always have something to rely on, generational wealth, a stable family. and that's not my case and that's okay. So I accept it, do my job, get a stable income, and do enjoyable things on the side. this is exactly why I started following you, so thank you for this (coming from a fellow economist).

Was in DC for a work conference at the Rockefeller Foundation the same time you filmed this I'm thinking; living my best Selena Trevino life working in DC hoping I see you lol. The weather was miserably muggy compared to Mass and then It rained the next day mid-way through and was completely dry again by 8pm on the day I was flying out it felt like a normal summer. I decided DC summers were weird and hardly fun lol. The candle thing you couldn't name is a candle snuffer that extinguishes the flame. Okay, I really love this perspective on self care. I have a whole business that revolves around self care products, but I also now have a wellness community -- because, I totally agree that self care comes in many forms. This really made me think, though, about how work can be self care for me as well. You did a nice job explaining this from a whole new perspective. Glad I stumbled upon your vlog!

Wow, I'm commenting twice and I never comment on videos! As far as the working a job you love, I have been a teacher (University Instructor) for a lonnnnng time and one summer I was so stressed out that I started diving into 'self care' in the form of essential oils and reflexology and massage and---all the things. It led to a business that I started 8 years ago. I still teach a class here and there, but I mostly run my business full time. I never thought this would be my life and I am so grateful that I am living my dreams these days. There's a lot more to say about this that is too big for a comment, but I may do a video to explain these thoughts. Thanks for making me really think about these things today!!

Self care can be so good hard because you need to be self aware to truly know what’s bothering you, and not get distracted by emotion. My dream job used to be becoming a ‘psychologist’ because I’ve always loved helping people in my age group. However after working for a while, I realised that my true passion is talent management (in HR). Where the goal is not only helping someone overcome their fears, but to also excel with their strengths and passion

One hundred percent agree with this, I work for the government in the state I live in and it’s a great place. Though my ultimate purpose is unknown and I’m appreciative of the life and growth it affords me, but it’s not my life career and that’s okay. I’m enjoying the journey and the people I’m learning from. There is this part of me that feels a sense of lacking because so many people my age are following their passion and I’m just wanting to sit in spaces of curiosity while being smart with the bigger picture. I’ve found that this space I’m sitting in is a good and healthy, the challenges I face with my career are important in my growth. Though it does get hard because some days I want to go Gatsby and then others I want the life I have now.
