Fabolous customer care service. Although I haven't been able to decide using the method to calculate my tax return but since last few days that I came across this video and left some comments and even direct email. Their response and support t was behind my expectation. I strongly recommend subscribing or if needed purchasing their software and be sure their human support would be available. and I have to thank Zak for the great support.

This is great guide and calculator thank you. I have some questions if anyone could help: Total rent and similar bills = £1,500 I live with my partner and we split the payments evenly therefore £750 left. 4 rooms in total: 1/4*£750 = £187.50 I spent 2 days working from one room, therefore 2/7*£187.50 = £53.57. I notice all the examples don’t consider when you occupy the place with others, I assume you have to just start with your share?

It doesn’t make a difference if someone lives with you or not. If that was the case, self-employed individuals with families would barely be able to claim anything for their office as home expenses. The only factors that come into play are number of rooms in total and the number of rooms used, as well as the time worked. Hope this helps you? If not, please do let me know and I'll be happy to help! :) - LR

@ thanks a lot for the response! So despite sharing the rent cost and council tax etc, I can essentially go with full rent x days of the week (2/7) x split of rooms 1/4)? Also, the flat I rent is actually a 2 bedroom, but I have taken into account a living room and kitchen (these two are actually one large open space). Should I therefore be saying 4 rooms or actually 2 (2 bedrooms)?

@@gosimpletax hello mate, great content. Quick one, self employed joiner, work from home (both office and workshop, which is located in my back garden) what would the fomula be in my case?

My accountant says she has queried this with HMRC and you can only claim via the simplified method/ flat rate £6 per week ie £26 pcm as you mention week but if you work from home in a residential property, you can only claim via that simplified method. So which one is it? Gov.UK also say you can claim a percentage as you mention. £6 a week is pisstake when i have dedicated office room & i use atleast 3 sometimes 5 days per week up to 12 hours a day. Especially when rent & utilities are through the roof!

Rules changed after covid to make it harder to claim for working from home in employment. More information can be found here: www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/working-at-home. For self-employed people, you can claim the simplified method or actual method using our calculator. - LR

This is so helpful and makes it really logical, however on you form it's missed off spaces to enter metered water and broadband, so I created my own version on a spreadsheet of your form.

Hi, would I Please be able to see this? Many thanks
@renebarrow.virtualreality9 ай бұрын
@@haashimj778 You can create your own. List the bills like it shows in the calculator, and include your own for broadband and metered water. 1. Assuming your total expenditure is £10,000 a year, your house has 4 rooms and 1 is being used as a home office, you would divide £10,000 / 4 = £2500. 2. Assuming the total number of hours you use the room is 200 hours, you would then get the cost per hour £2500/200 = £12.50 per hour. 3. Assuming the number of hours you use the room for work is 150, you would then multiply the hourly rate £12.50 * 150 = £1875 estimated allowable costs.

Thanks a lot for your respond although I have created my account and tried to use the website you provided, I believe it needs me to provided evidence and calculation for every bit of expense incurred during 12 months which is really impossible for someone to have it all in position. majority my works are from home and some visit to the sides but no evidence to prove everything.

The dates are irrelevant as they’re only for your own reference (all that matters is they fall within the tax year that you’re filing for.) The same applies for attachments, in most cases, they’re not required and just for your own reference. You may disregard them if you don’t want to fill them in. Hope this helps? Please do let me know if you need anything else. - LR

urgent guidance needed please; For someone who works as interpreter from home and also having some trips to client office where the company agreed to add some addition to the payment how this would be claimed? secondly can you kindly advise about program or webinar or anything that can help me how to cover the rest of expense as you just explained the calculation for these factors? I'm just not sure how to deduct them properly. it is for 2023-2024 do i need to pay the accountant or use my own laptop?

Unfortunately, I’m unable to give a straight cut answer, as there are quite a few factors that come into play that’ll influence the guidance I can provide. I’d suggest getting in touch with our support team who’ll be more than happy to assist further. - LR

What if I am self-employed but spend most of my time working in public spaces out of choice (e.g. public library, coffee shops, co-working spaces)? Should I try to estimate how much of the time I was actually at home while working, or is it safe just to calculate my expenses as if all my work was completed at home?

HMRC Employment Income Manual EIM32820 states that for 2006/07 onwards, the following are not deductable: Council Tax, Rent, Mortgage Interest, Water Rates, Insurance.
It refer to : When an employee's home is a workplace

When using the calculator what about the broadband / water bill? How much of that can you claim? Also, does this need to be submitted somewhere specific on the self assesment or just added into expenses when the calculation is made?
@gosimpletax2 ай бұрын
You’d apportion it so the figure only reflects the amount used solely for business purposes only. If you don’t know the exact figures, please use an educated guess. -LR

@gosimpletax Using your suggested splitting of time between personal use of a room and business use, how would you go about splitting a bedroom also used as an office space. Is 24 hours equals to 100% time? Also, for a rented home how important is it to calculate the amount of time used exclusively for work in the room used for split purpose?
@gosimpletax2 ай бұрын
However many hours you use your bedroom for business use, calculate this as a percentage of the total hours in a day and use that figure. Examples can be found at www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/business-income-manual/bim47825

You may be able to claim a portion as a business expense. I’d recommend that you consult an accountant or HMRC for definitive guidance.
