WOW!! You guys are getting some really vicious comments. I like to throw in an idea now and then. As I see these projects after they are completed, its not possible to cut you off at the pass. I try to leave my ideas for you to consider. If there is a problem that develops, Then if you replace/repair you have some ideas to bounce around. The thought of losing all your water scares me. Losing electricity is a pain, but you can probably thrive w/o it. You seem to be able to replace any water you lose. There is a lot to learn in this world. If one cannot send a helpful or cheerful comment it would be better to take it to your grave.

In engineering schools there are usually things like Concrete Toboggan Teams or Concrete Canoe teams. I was part of one for a year and I think you guys would find some of their ideas about concrete really interesting! For example, one of the things they did one year was put polystyrene in the concrete. They did a bunch of strength tests and found that this made the concrete stronger and more flexible and was a great way to keep all that styrofoam out of a landfill. If you're interested in experimenting, perhaps you could reach out to a university near you to learn about that!

I worked concrete for a lot of years, we would use tie wire instead of string. Secure one end to batter board, set the nail on other board, not all the way. Bend nail at a 90. Wrap the tie wire around the nail, use a 16 penny for twisting. Now you can twist the nail and wire making it as tight as a piano wire. String over a distance is not reliable. Just a thought. Enjoy your videos. Be safe and enjoy the adventure.

hands on experience is worth far more than classroom time. We have had people come to work for us with "degrees in construction" who were completely useless and could not manage a construction site if there life depended on it,they may have know all the names of things and technical terms and safety stuff which is great but you just cant really know the trades unless you have physically done them and been around at least seeing the work done for a good amount of time. a lot of the learning comes from the problems you have to solve so if you have never dealt with any of it hands on you are useless.

Hook up at a quarry and try to get a trommel with steel grizzly bar design. Set up to load and let gravity fall into scoop pits, Good luck on the dig. A barter app would be huge..Trade rough lumber sawing for other house needs..including labor..or repay labor with your community. Go to closest landfill..allow hardwood and chip deliveries.. Offer to cut delivered valuable hardwood logs for 1/2 the lumber. A cold 12 PK at a scrap yard, at days end is worth it's weight in gold for steel and old homestead tools.

Speaking of trades, my husband's company built municipal water treatment facilities and for years they had trouble finding anyone who could do basic work like concrete finishing or pipe laying. Schools used to have 'shop' class but that is long gone and so are trade schools for the most part. When you look for trade schools you find a bunch of on-line schools for trades like nursing or aircraft mechanics but not construction and when you do find one, they want as much for tuition for a job that makes $25,000 a year as they do for one that makes $75,000 a year. Add that to the fact that students would have to travel halfway across the country for the few schools they do have and they would still have to have a place to live and gas and food money for a school that does not have dorms or student cafeteria or any of the other things that colleges have means you couldn't find many people who could afford to go. I doubt there are any scholarships or grants for concrete laying schools. I read an article in Forbes about how many jobs are going unfilled just because they can't find anyone trained to do the jobs, the US is going to be in a world of hurt when everyone forgets how to repair the infrastructure.

People back off about the new truck!! Regardless how they got it it's clearly needed. Anybody who has ever towed a piece of equipment bigger than a lawnmower knows that that 300I6 in that f150 is inadequate. Being that they can save numerous delivery fees on rental equipment and move their backhoe around to help their neighbors out makes a truck payment pretty insignificant even if they did finance it.

Hey guys! So, you may have noticed that whenever there's a cut in your videos, there is a small, glitchy-sounding "pop" (more apparent on bigger speakers and nice headphones--I only bring this up because on my particular headphones it actually hurts a little). There's a SUPER DUPER quick fix for this. Whatever editing software you're using, there should be a command that allows you to fade all your audio clips at once while they're selected. On Premiere Pro, for instance, it's ctrl+shift+d. There's a similar command in Final Cut, Avid, Vega, and many others. All that to say, my brain loves your stuff, and my ears really want to! :)

Let me help you, why don't you build a tool shed/ workshop , simple square structure, simple basic slab foundation. It will help gain some skills, make some progress, give you somewhere to store all that stuff during the winter, somewhere to put the wood cutter and work with it during the winter. Rather than trying to build a home n the winter, which is where this is going. You have time to build a basic dry workshop , then comeback and refine it once the house is done. Their time and motion skills on this "journey" seem none existent . They are making everything so difficult for themselves, setting themselves up to fail.

Concrete work is one of those things that seems simple in concept but is really pretty hard in reality, specially if you don't have the experienced skills. ---After reading some of the post viewers have made it's obvious that some doesn't mind getting down into other people's personnel business, I know I don't like it when others get all worked up about my spending habits when it's really none of their business, I'm certainly not going to do that to others. I am willing to bet though their taxes are (or will be) quite complicated, they are building a new house so the capital gains on the non-roll over funds is something they and their CPA will only know (and the Gov.).

Because people are feeling like they wasted a whole lot of time watching videos to learn how to build a homestead the cheap way and its not turning out to be what it was advertised as. They are starting to feel used, exploited for their 'clicks', which in the world today are a sort of currency. I am an old lady in a wheelchair, I am never going to be doing any construction, I just watch for the entertainment but many people are looking for 'How-to' videos because they are planning on homesteading too. Time is money as they say and people don't want to waste their time watching only to discover it was a year's worth of clickbait.
@candidethirtythree43247 жыл бұрын
I know right? That is what I do, mostly I don't even bother to unsubscribe. There are like a billion videos on KZbin, maybe more so no shortage of stuff to watch. It is a little disappointing when a channel you watch daily turns into nothing but an infomercial or whatever but its not like there aren't other options. This isn't "This Old House" where Bob Villa suddenly started plugging Sears tools, PBS has to make money too even though they don't have commercials.

Construction management isn't what you need to learn. That deals with administration practices and controlling costs and subcontracts more than construction practices. Best to find an actual construction company that is pouring concrete who is looking for laborers. Trust me, you'll get experience QUICK when you're on a cement pour or brick laying project. Plus, picking up your state's standard specs will also give you free structural plans and practices that'll prove helpful in planning your own house.

these guys should take a few years and work for a construction company. spending 2 hours at a site is meaningless, they might as well have stayed home. my dad owned a construction company and I grew up around it. ultimately I went a different direction career wise, but I'll never forget what i learned while working construction. I still use these skills all the time whether i'm doing something at home or helping friends with their homes. Even with years of past experience i don't think i would attempt to build my own home even though i have all the tools, experience and knowhow. Because of that experience, i know how much work it is and more importantly how much time it takes to form a foundation, frame, insulate, electrical, plumbing, inspections etc. I would renovate my house by myself, one room at a time, but that's a different story altogether. it's taken them over a year so far to get a leaking water system partially installed. I'm not trying to be negative just realistic. it's one thing to say my wife and I are going to build a home, it will be cheap and easy, it's another thing to pull it off before you die of old age or worse by a construction accident. Experience has also taught me how dangerous construction is as well, and let's face it they are technically unemployed, they make youtube videos, so i'm sure they don't have great health insurance, disability insurance etc,. My advice would have been to buy a house already standing and renovate it. then make it off grid if that's what they want, but since they already have the land and a septic system on it they should really consider getting a contractor. At least have someone come in pour the foundation, frame the house, put the roof on, install the windows and siding, rough in the electric and plumbing. if they're still hell bent on it they could pick it up from there, it would still take two inexperienced people years to finish a house out. but at least they would have a good starting point, that is safe, up to code, won't leak or burn down from an electrical fire.

I think you miss the point entirely. They have never said that it was going to be cheap or easy. They are taking un-improved land and building a house. The have consulted tradesmen, manufacturers and engineers. They are building all of this up as they go with residual income and savings plus what they earn off of ad revenue from multiple sites. If you were insulted by this video simply because you are a tradesman, the I feel for you. Jesse and Alyssa have not lied to anyone, you are not listening. You heard what you expected to hear and failed to understand or comprehend what they were saying. You have two ears and one mouth for a reason. You are spending your own money trying to learn and you will spend more money screwing it up and then you will spend even more money to get it right. Only then will you have a better idea of what not to do or how not to do something.

Guys, give them a break. they simple talking about their experiences in Life. Like it has been said. "The more you know, the more you know that you don't know." They may not be doing things the professional way but at least they are trying, and they aren't hurting any you-tubers trying.
