I understand. I'm 53. I quit working in 2017. I have had panic disorder with agoraphobia for decades. I've worked lots of retail and I have horror stories too. I swear people used to sniff me out to torture me like they knew I had panic disorder. I went back into therapy and was diagnosed with PTSD. I was told I couldn't work ever again which I already knew. I also knew I couldn't get disability. A disability attorney told me not to waste my time because I have a husband who has a full time job that supports me. My husband works in a factory so we are blue collar. I live very frugally. We are debt free. It's not always easy but I will do without if I have to. Thank you for shedding light on mental health issues. Not everyone is as fortunate as me. Some people HAVE to work WITH mental afflictions. My heart goes out to them.

Im only 28 but my body is completely destroyed from 9-5 retail/warehouse jobs and im doing the work of 3 people. I've saved in total about $90K so far,Once I reach $100K Im COMPLETELY DONE. I'll make it work even if I have to live in a camper - I mentally can't do it anymore. The customers have gotten simply ABUSIVE since I started working about 12 years ago.

I left the workforce in 2017. I have zero debt, I live with my partner who owns his own small farm and is also debt free, and I live extremely frugally on my small income from a rental property I own. We grow much of our food and have chickens and cows for our meat and eggs.

I’m a retired RN of 30 + years. Nursing started out fairly well but as time went on , hospitals became corporations and businesses and to hell with patient care. They didn’t want to staff for safety and we were constantly UNDERSTAFFED for safe patient care. And don’t complain!!! Everything you said, unfortunately applies to nursing. It’s really sad. I would never go back!!! Ever!! I would be afraid to be a patient. So sad. For the first time since 1980, I’m letting my nursing license go. It’s bittersweet

I agree 100%. Working in the customer service industry is one of the most degrading jobs ever. I worked in a call center before in the hood. Nothing but low lives like ex convicts, drug dealers, gang members, etc. It was a 3rd party company for a cable provider. The workers would fight each other, typically women. I would be on the phone making a sale and the customer on the phone would always hang up because they could hear everything that was happening in the call center. The power to the building would cut off often, hang to bring your own toilet paper, workers would steal your food out of the fridge, people would constantly ask me for rides home, and the bosses were all ghetto and rude. I was also a cashier and stocked shelves at several grocery stores. I witnessed drug addicts doing drugs in the bathrooms to the point the bathrooms were closed for the customers, I witnessed people stealing, I have seen coworkers having romantic time in the break rooms, an angry customer waited outside for an employee and tried to hit him with her car. In closing, I stopped working with the public, learned how to code, and now I write programs for apps for a company that deals with disabled children. I'm glad I got the customer service experience early in my 20s because it taught me a lot about people in the world and is why I'm cynical and stoic. I would go a step further than living in a tent if I had to do those jobs again. I'd rather die. Lol

I worked at the 99 cent store for 4 years after losing my job at a Aerospace job (37 years) they closed that company and moved it to Iowa. I live in California. Couldn't get a job (Covid) but I was blessed to get the retail job. Most customers are pleasant, but I had bags of apples thrown at me and other stuff. That is when I really found out how mean society is. I endured the closing of the store. I am 66 and now I am still looking for a retail part time store. It is so sad how people are so mean and do not care to treat you with respect. Love your channel.

Prepper Princess, it never occurred to me how co-workers and HR will "team up" in order usurp someone else's schedule. I left a very toxic work environment a number of years ago due to my manager fishing for information and lies about me from my co-workers to get me written up, put on a PIP, or have me fired. Years later, thanks to this video, I connected the dots on when my manager changed my schedule around to accommodate someone else on the basis of what she heard from my co-workers. I had seniority both in position and years working there and I was furious that my schedule was changed, especially since I worked for it in order to spend more time with my family. And don't get me started on the "well, you don't have kids..." excuse as if those of us without children suddenly don't have family or responsibilities.
@onusnous

You are very correct. People are AWEFUL when they get a bit of power over those they consider "underlings". It's very nice to be able to have the option to just walk away when the narrsasistic rage boss starts. The look on their face when you just calmly say, you know, I can go if you don't like my attentiveness, promptness, and efficency at this position. He absolutely did a 180, begging me to stay. I just took off my butcher coat, calmly folded and put it down, and walked out. No hard feelings, I have dignity and self respect and will not tolerance being taken for granted, covering other people who just dissappear for half a day without clocking out, being belittled, or scolded because someone else did not do their job. Nope. There are so many other opportunities out there. 😊

I worked in a grocery store throughout high school. There were times that I had to deal with customers who were unpleasant, if not downright rude, but I never once feared for my safety. Now, people are selfish, unhinged lunatics. I've lost all faith in humanity. On a side note; that call center who restricted bathroom usage was in direct violation of OSHA.

I had to go on disability at 49, but I worked for the public for over 30 years. Waitress for 12 years (I heard a woman tell her daughter, when the daughter said 'Mom, you're in that lady's way; Mom says "That's not a lady - that's a waitress.") & 18 years as a water clerk in a city , where I heard "I pay your salary", "It's the fault your retirement plan that the state to go broke", & my favorite :" I'll have your job" (Go ahead, you can have it). I met some truly wonderful people though. There's a lack of empathy in the world.

I to have PTSD from working at a call center for 10yrs and then a bank for another 10. I’m in a place now that I can just work part time and I pick up a few 5hr shifts at Amazon and looove it. I just package people’s junk orders. No customers no phones no BS corporate meetings. No supervisors to deal with or bogus deadlines or quotas.

I married at 19 at the beginning of our marriage I worked as a medical assistant until I was about 6 months pregnant with my husband and I first child. We had our son and then 22 months later our daughter. I needed o earn an income to help out however, I knew I could not have a 9-5 out of the home job which would mean leaving my children, my husband felt the same. I started and in home child care business and did that for 19 years. I can't imagine an office job, I've seen so much family / friends do it and I'm thankful I never had to. We never lived the high life, we enjoyed an annual trip to the fair from money saved in a 5-gallon water container over the course of a year... and other inexpensive things. Our children always had new clothes at the beginning of each school year but not name brand.. when I ask my children who are now 38 and 40 if they would have preferred their life to be different. They say heck no... my 38 year old daughter stays home with my 4-year-old grandson which means sacrifices and not a fancy way of life but her family says they wouldn't trade it for anything.🥰

I get this Princess. I’m a professional. My last job I worked there 20 yrs and I loved it until my last boss who bragged was a Christian, but didn’t always act like one. The last 8 yrs were hell and I even got psychological help through this company because of that boss. I always received stellar yearly reviews until her. I was the go to girl if my coworkers needed help. I stuck it out until my retirement. I have empathy for anyone who has a great work ethic and has these types of scenarios. Love to our great workers! ❤

I have worked in customer service, in a family owned bakery and a cafe, respectively, and fortunately, both experiences were positive. The pay was modest, but the customers were generally polite, and the owners would send me home with all the bread and milk I needed at the end of the day. Best of all, they were the kinds of jobs I could leave behind at the end of the day. On the other hand, I worked an office job for a large company (AIG), and it was one of the most miserable experiences of my life. I simply quit one day after catching myself contemplating whether or not I should step off the platform into the path of my morning train. I have never been acquisitive, but at that point, I started to live as frugally as possible. My aim was to be able to thrive on an income that was less than the unemployment benefit, whether I was working or not. Now I am debt free, I have substantial savings, my time is my own, my needs are few, and I have never been happier. I love the frugal lifestyle!

I completely agree. This nonsense happens to restaurant workers a lot. Managers are completely insane. They seamed to enjoy cheating their employees. More than once, I worked a ten hour shift without a single break. Against the law? Not with their little loophole. When I complained that I hadn’t had a break, their response was always, you can take a break any time you want, as long as you are caught up. FYI, that never happens to restaurant cooks. The only time things are caught up, is when you can go home because things are caught up. I will never do it again.

Im glad I saw this! I thought it was just me dealing with this. Everything you mentioned was spot on. The workforce has become so EVIL! Due to this ,I am struggling to hold down a job longer than 6 months. I developed major depression due to this and have been unemployed for a year now. I am praying to find some WFH job but it’s harder than people make it out to be. Im hopeful though!

I'm similar in lots of ways. I left the nine to five 8 years ago. I worked hard in management positions, but it crushed me emotionally. I'm blessed to have a paid off house and no debt, I love to cook and never eat out, and I pray I NEVER have to return to the traditional work force. I gave up a lot of frills like manicures, constant shopping, vacations, etc. but I would not trade it for the world! I'm with my husband and daughter so much, and we're a very close family. I've learned to be careful how I sell my time, and to sacrifice in order to do so.

Fabulous. I loved that seeing I related to it so much. As a former worker at a grocery store one of my coworkers got a frozen whole bird turkey thrown at her because the customer wanted 2 turkerys for Thanksgiving when the sale was one per customer. It's unreal working in retail these days.

100% agree with your comments about HR & management are not on your side. Of course, they are on the side of the company. Don't ever talk personal stuff or visit personal websites at work. Just assume everything you do at work is being monitored and everything you say or type can be used against you.

You've described a lot of my working life. I have also started my own business this year that is building up - for the last few months I've been working on my business PLUS working my soul crushing job. I think I'm going to be able to quit the job within a few months. When I'm having a bad day at my job, a game I like to play is writing my resignation letter in my head - and it can get pretty long. But in reality, the only thing I'll probably say is "Bye." I don't want to spend much more energy on it and I may not even give notice.

I worked as an emergency department RN. There was a local drug dealer family, who were frequent flyers and would tell us nurses they knew where we lived and that they would wait for us in the car park to get us. 30 years on from this particular department and I haven’t forgotten how nasty these people were. I do understand what you are saying PP. I couldn’t imagine being screamed at all shift in a call centre. And knowing you have to deal with this every day for a minimum wage job.

Agree 100%! Ty Princess for sharing. Worked in a call center for 5 years. Never again. 2 min handle time was the expectation. 10 hour shifts. Felt like dropping dead after 100+ calls in a day. I apologize now if I speak to someone on the phone in customer service if the call lasts over 2 min. Sorry if I messed up your handle time metric. We were modern day slaves managed by slave drivers.

You are absolutely correct. After working many years as an on-call tech for the police I can't answer a telephone any more. Now, I am no shrinking violet and served my country in the air force. However, being the go-to guy absolves everyone of all responsibilities to learn their systems. In the UK right now the government complain about people who are 'economically inactive " it's for exactly the reasons you so eloquently describe. People need to realise that you trade something for your paycheck that you can never recover - your time. Thanks for highlighting this issue. It's important 👍

Thank you for addressing this. My son suffers from anxiety because he is high-functioning autistic. He is graduating college and going to cybersecurity school. If he can not get or keep a job we are going to purchase off-grid property to have him care for himself and we will leave our home to him. I know it will help if he works but I am prepared if he doesn't and this is an important issue even for a neurotypical person. I am retired and I love it.

People are terrible to the young people. They’ll go in around 8 in the morning for coffee and harass a barista that has been there since 4:30 am. Meaning that barista has no social life due to having to go to bed by 7 or 8… get up around 3:30 and head to work. It really pisses me off when I see it. So many people are so arrogant, hatful, and ignorant.
