Working Boer Goats with Herding Dogs

Patrick Dean of thestockdogcompany.com came to visit the farm with Zoey, a Kelpie and Mac, a Border Collie. Both of these dogs exhibited great skill and massive amounts of heart. A happy dog is one working to it’s purpose and these two dogs are very happy. Sit back and enjoy!

Our working dogs are the best. Can get $10k each. We bred Scottish border colllies with dingos.

Did he say you have to be with dog when sending them out? How far can u send them out to bring in a herd? Mines about a 30 minute walk away. Will a dog go that far and bring them home? It's a 100 ac island

Brian how large are each of our paddocks and how many goats do you graze per paddock? Thanks in advance.

+Bob ree on average 2 to 2.5 acres per paddock, 100 head total including kids. There is more than enough grass to run many more, perhaps 300. Just have to be prepared for drought seasons and feed hay if needed due to weather.

Hi Brian, Question about your dog Zoey? Did you get here trained and did you put her straight on goats or how long did that transition take?

She came to me at about three years old already trained. I intellectually understand the process of training a dog but it’s a very tight schedule and a very specific skill set so I think it’s easier for most of us to just buy a trained dog.

How long did it take her when you got her to go to work on the goats was there any getting use to you transition

In those lower paddocks do you have any problems with menengeal worm.

Not the lower ones, but we did around the pond

I must add that our untrained border collie does the same things as Zoey with our goats

I take it if you have a LGD you gotta put them up cause if not there will be a dead herding dog.

coolguy24eric no we have no problem with our herding dog working the herd with guardian dogs present. But they had to be introduced for a month or so along a common fence line at first and then small doses of work at a time.

@@369ranch : I had trouble rounding up just THREE little dwarf goats yesterday who gleefully escaped their temporary enclosure. No dog, just two of newbie goat owners. Once they tasted freedom, they climbed on some big rocks to survey the lands. King of the Hill. I found a makeshift shepherd's crook and got behind them. Wife on the other side. Finally got them back in the pen. Who knows where they would have ended up.
