I worked corporate for most my life and gave everything to my role. I even bought into the ‘work as family’ concept that I realized too late is a myth. After years of 14-16 hour days, shift work at all hours of the day, working through weekends and holidays and other behaviors that weren’t doing me any good. After 12 years of this pattern, the stress made me very ill which required me to take medical leave for months. Thankfully I’m. Canadian and I received excellent treatment and didn’t have to worry about finances. It gave me the opportunity to reevaluate where I was and why to realize I had missed out on so much of life in the last 12 years and that because of my illness, I may now never get to do the things I said I would do. When I returned to work, I found that I no longer had the job I used to in a way that was like going from being chief surgeon in the operation to first aid attendant. I could be upset but instead taking this opportunity to work 9-5 M to F and using the time I’ve gained to rework my life so that I can be free again. No more corporate race and overcoming fears that hold me back from leaping into a new life. Your videos help keep me on that path and inspire me to keep going . Thanks.

You hit every checkbox of the self-employed workaholic. Being away from work isn't slacking, it's recharging/resetting. That's important. Don't think of work as a game, it's a novel. Take your time and don't rush through it because you need to 'win' it. Ideas distill better if you give them time to settle. Walk away, relax and come back. There is more to life than working. You don't need to be the best.

For a while now ive been debating posting content about coding as a beginner. Most coding content that shows up has skilled devs coding and not explaining everything they are doing, which makes it incredibly hard for new people to follow along with their thought process and understand the reasoning behind what they are doing. Ive personally found it difficult to follow along when they move at a certain speed and dont bother explaining the whole process of what they are doing. Its like learning a second language, a native speaker can lose a newbie by speaking too quickly or not explaining thoroughly

But then you need to ask questions, when i do my Dev Tutorials i try explain everything what is not obvious, but if noone ask a question in the comments, in the next Video i cannot improve. For youtube Creators, you just sit infront of a camera and you have no idea how the people react to it. If you talk so someone you see it in his face and then you can choose your words differently. So if you find next time such a video, ask in the comments :D well it will be hard if the Video Creator doesn't reply.

Hey Josh, I have a To-Do list too on what I have to do for the day and the month, the trimester and the full year and I try to follow it. I have used notebooks, google calendar and apps, but I had the most success with... ruled index cards. The point is to divide the Ruled index card by 7 horizontal and vertically. You have 49 cells to cross. When you cross the whole side of that card, it is the 50th. The other side of the card has 50th cells to cross as well. So, with one card you have 100 cells. 100 days to cross. I would have one card for everything I want to do: Code 1 hour, write a blogpost, Make or edit a video, go to the gym, etc. Then I would cross them as I do them. If that day I don't, I write down why I couldn't do it (and it tarnishes your card). That helped me a lot. If anyone is interested on more about that, check the Technique 3: 'Track your progress" letslearnabout.net/blog/lets-learn-about-fighting-procrastination/ Now I do it with a small notepad (weekly). It uses less space but it is not as fun as crossing a whole side of a card. Give it a try if you want.

Maybe the issue is that we are struggling with 2 things 1 - Expectations of... (goals, our life, what we should be doing, comparison) 2 - Maximizing mindset vs satisficing (the latter will make you happier) Point #1 will always make us unhappy even when we are at the top based on our unrealistic unnataible high expectations of what should we be doing or feeling or at what stage of our lives we should be in comparison to others, or to our own ideas of life. Point #2 will always be a struggle because we will feel that we have to make the best decision, the best use of our time, the best of our money, will the other approach is just to satisfy a need and solved a problem instead of being the best or making the best. Just my random thoughts....

Love your videos. You are inspiring me. I’ve dabbled in making videos with some of my other channels, and I get discouraged. But I love your approach of “just show up.“ That’s what I have to do, at least on this front. What kind of amusing is are used to be one of those middle manager types. I felt like I couldn’t win. One day, I’m getting feedback on one of those mandatory employee surveys and everybody came back with “I want to do more team building activities.“ That’s when I rotated to another department, I did that. Then this group of people said, “I hate doing these teambuilding activities.“ I threw my hands up in the air and said, “I just can’t win.“ So now I have a Leadership consulting business which focuses on team activities, ironically. I think the real key when it comes to these activities, or corporate cringe, as you call it is being able to read the room and the temperature. Before I left my job, I would organize activities but make them completely optional. I also made it clear that attendance had no bearing on my rating of you as an employee. Some people showed up, some people went home. It worked pretty well. So that’s my philosophy today. Make the activity available, let people decide for themselves and don’t evaluate performance based on showing up to these events. I certainly made that very clear when I recommended somebody for promotion who never showed up to any of the activities while somebody who did show up I did not recommend promotion. That certainly reinforced I was being honest and how I evaluated people.

I sorta have a journal but I use Onenote and take notes on a lot of things. I have a HEALTH notebook, 'to do NOW, to do LATER list', LEARN notebook, SCHEDULE notebook, etc.. I definitely need a schedule. I find it pretty easy to use since I always have it with me on pc, iphone or ipad, and you can put checkboxes on every line very easily to mark things off. I actually find it easier to get myself to look at that more often than a real notebook. I also believe clearing the mind and 'meditating' is very important, although very difficult to do sometimes. If I sit and stare at something without moving my eyes for long enough I sometimes have very, very strange 'conscious state' experiences so it keeps me interested in just sitting and clearing sometimes. I've learned that living 70 to 80 years on average is such a short amount of time and no matter how hard or long you work you'll never end up doing everything in life that you want or plan, and clearing the mind makes you more productive while doing less work. Over working, even at things people love, can kill them. I also realize that no amount of money would have saved my mom's life, so although making enough to help you an others feel more comfortable is really great for everyone, being a millionaire will not save everyone or solve all health problems. 'The Secret' kinda got it wrong. Intention and positive thoughts aren't going to magically make things appear. But I am convinced this reality is probability based and that thoughts do have pull on everything in this reality. Dean Radin has really good data on this. Tom Campbell also has great info on this subject and states that conscious intent can change the probability of something happening and may tip the scale, but your intention is in a tug of war with everyone else's and so it comes down to probability. If something has a 51 percent probability of not happening for you, and then you intend on it consistently, you make change that probability by a few percent and tip that scale. It definitely seems there is something to it with recent data. Working out is definitely a huge factor for me. If I don't I will get depressed very easily. Simple as that. I'll be working out until my bones start to break and turn to dust. I don't listen to books but I listen to Coast to Coast AM podcasts every day and I get a lot of ideas from the crazy stories I hear on that show. I honestly wouldn't be coming here if all you did were corporate cringe vids. I like those but those vids are not why I keep coming to this channel. I think you should just make videos because you want to, whatever comes to mind. I'd like to see video editing tutorials or something from someone that isn't a guru. Makes me feel like it's more possible for me to learn, and that's one thing on my long list of things to learn. I'm just always afraid to get started and jump in. I'd love to do KZbin content (not for the money, cause let's be real, money probably isn't going to happen for most), but have no idea of what camera to use, what kind of lighting, what kind of mic, where the camera should be, what content to do, etc.. I think your personality, wit and rawness are why most people come here (and the varied content).

As long as you depend on having a clientele to maintain a business that you view as a pyramid for you to put yourself atop of, you will *never* be your own boss. If all it takes for your business to go belly up is a really bad day on Wall Street or a really good day in Silicon Valley, you will *never* have job security. Instead of focusing on these truly unattainable goals, focus on finding something you're so good at that feels the less like work and more like a hobby, so you'll actually enjoy what you do for a living that the risk of your business collapsing or less than savory clients don't phase you at all. If you're really good at this, you will always be able to find a way to keep your business afloat, and good clients will always find their way to you through word of mouth of your successful client relations.

For what's it's worth, you are very inspiring, especially with your family situation. Can't imagine that kind of pressure. That's a niche you should explore more for content too, because you have millions of potential viewers who are struggling out there that could relate to it. It's very personal and private, yes, but you could do brainstorming interviews with others in a similar situation about how to best deal with it.
