As a software developer I can say the right to repair is important to fight for. With John Deere (and other companies) it's important to find where their software ip ends and universal software ip begins. On top of that, parts is a huge thing. Are 3rd party parts available? Can they work? Companies like Apple pay factories to destroy extra parts so they can't get out and make sure their phones brick if you try to use a 3rd party part that isn't apple specific. I recently learned John Deere was fighting the right to repair. Losing the right to repair means guys who have the expertise to repair your tech in your truck better and cheaper than the dealer can't/won't be able to run a business and you may become forced to buy only the companies parts. losing right to repair strengthens monopolies. But watching this, thank you for teaching me more about the repair and maintenance of farm equipment. Very informative. You got a +1 subscribe from me.

It's like when a certain well-known USB chip manufacturer provided a driver update as part of a Windows update ... the new driver did some speed tests on the USB interface chips in connected devices, and if any device failed the test then it determined that it wasn't that particular manufacturer's chip so their driver scrambled the PID in the USB interface. I had a 1TB drive from an unrelated but well-known HDD manufacturer that was "bricked" as a result of that.

I do understand Grant's words about the future of maintenance by farmers on John Deere. But also other brands of tech like Apple are trying to make sure no one else can fix there equipment. But I think that wrong. It's creating a Monopoly.

Laura, you have joy making these videos and we/I have joy watching them with your cheerful personality! KEEP ON BEING YOU! DON'T EVER CHANGE! You brighten my days! You are so much fun to watch! A delight! That sun going up and down on your intro ought to have your smiling face on it! LOL Nice to see what Grant is up to and hearing his comments. The problem that I have with the right to repair is when the manufacturer says "we no longer support it". Then they expect you to plunk down BIG bucks for a brand new tractor, combine, etc. when the old one works just fine but only needs a software update. Also manufacturers make their parts proprietary to keep the aftermarkets from making replacement parts better and cheaper and to force you to have to buy from them only to maximize their profits. Then when they "no longer support it" they try to block others from making and selling these parts and software to fit their machines and marketing them. The same goes for the automotive industry too which I had worked in for 30 years. I agree with Grant on the good reason why they don't want others messing with the software while the machines are under warranty to protect their equipment from breaking.abuse, but these makers often try to prevent the aftermarkets from coming up with these parts and software, which is wrong. Competition is a good thing for the consumer. Nowdays big corporations with their high powered lawyers have pretty much destroyed it.

I always pour new fuel into diesel filters before installing them because diesels are SO DARN HARD to start when they run out of fuel from getting air locked! It often runs the batteries dead before they will start! I always pour new oil into engine oil filters too so that the engine doesn't start with no oil pressure on it and scar up the bearings. I do the same with hydraulic oil filters too to avoid air bubbles.

Grant, I'm glad you and your family get what you need for your farm from John Deere, and are able to service what you want to service. Please understand though that not all farmers are in the same boat, and the equipment industry IS changing. The number of manufacturers and dealers to choose from is a fraction of what it was 50 years ago. Software is just as critical to keep us in the field as an oil filter or a hitch pin. And unlike those standard bolts you wrench on, we are being locked out. If you don't have the ability to access the software (even if you don't care to), then you don't truly own that equipment; you're just leasing it as long as the manufacturer can make money from you. The Nebraska Farm Bureau representing 58,000 member families voted 176-1 in 2019 in FAVOR of right to repair. Despite this, legislation stalls out every year because manufacturers and their dealers spend millions fighting to keep their monopolies. Farmers and consumers need to stay united to improve this situation.
@joefudd
@joefudd 3 жыл бұрын
Right on! Not everyone has the big money to buy the new software and proprietary parts. My family are mostly small time farmers and this hurts them lots. Most of their equipment is decades old. These corporations are highly lawyered up and try to wring as much money out of everyone as they can. The little guy cannot survive it.

Be careful what you wish for. Software coding is far, far different than turning a wrench. Allowing users to make their own mods, and to try to untangle the aftermath makes a fertile ground for their party intervention, at big $$$. The auto industry has a similar issue. The auto techs are not in a position to make mods, ... for good reason.

Can confirm in Australia you have to spend 12k AUD for the right to use it yearly and even then you wont have access to the ability to use a computer to connect unless you spend another 5k on the adaptor. Mini mining boom over here in Western Australia has caused all the Ag mechanics to chase the money unfortunately. Even then we cant get infomation out of the local dealer as it is confidential but they slap us with a 1 month waiting time to get repaired. Ohh and FYI seeding is next week. Such is life......

We buy them by the bag full for taking home. I hosted the CC Riders motorcycle club ride to Loveland one spring for Runza's. A Runza Run. It had 50 riders and has become an annual ride.

I think the problem can get worse for modern john deere tractors, because the electronics are so intertwined with the tractor that certain things cannot be repaired without john deere. Then you are screwed. They would never be able to do that on the tractors on my farm, because they are 80’s tractors, (or older) and have no computers controlling them. The only thing they could do is make it impossible for you to repair the parts.

Morning, Laura. I've restricted my "farm" watching to you and Cole the Cornstar. Probably the biggest thing I've picked up is the amount of money it takes to farm and the extensive maintenance the machinery requires. Just the normal upkeep is staggering, much less the unexpected repairs. Parts aren't cheap, and it might help to show how much it takes if you can mention how often those things you changed out are replaced. Yearly? Every 2-3 years, as needed? I suspect with all the dirt encountered they don't last very long. And tell Grant he should prefill those fuel filters, wouldn't have to crank the starter so long. A little spilled diesel is cheaper than a JD starter. Love your vids, keep them coming.

I was anticipating the tire bounce and roll. 👍 On the Right to Repair, if only the manufacturer can work on the equipment , the wait and backlog will be enormous. But maybe they would improve the quality of the product. 🙄
@vk2ig
@vk2ig 3 жыл бұрын
There would be no incentive to improve the quality of the product if there is no effective competition. If all the manufacturers get involved in denying the right to repair then it means they can all be just as shonky as each other and produce less-than-optimum quality equipment. There are lessons in history here. For example, look at what happened to Detroit before the Iranian revolution. Detroit wanted to keep producing big gas guzzlers. Then Iran cut the oil supply, and suddenly people needed more fuel-efficient cars so the Japanese got into the market. Not only did people get smaller and more fuel-efficient cars, but they also got to learn about superior Japanese quality. That pushed Detroit to do some work ... otherwise they would never have changed (and in some instances they just couldn't change).

In the northeast we had right to repair for our mom & pop auto mechanics vs. Brand Dealerships......The forces behind brand dealerships used total fear tactics to scare/bully people to think right to repair was going to really harm you!!! Instead of cars they were talking about your houses being able to be broken into and other awful things. Luckily in our state the Mom and pop garages got the vote for right to repair!!!!!!! IE: Able to gain access to essential software!!!! Please when you see any commercial to either side of the Argument look at the names in the fine print at the bottom of the ad. Then research the force behind them. Take your political lean out of it and just look at the info and make your decision off that. Because sometimes you think one side is on your side(ex.brand vs. farmer/Local Mechanic) but really it is the exact opposite.

I am curious to know, do you recycle any of the parts that have been removed, or have them re-worked for use later?

They also make things get obsolete, like the sending receiving unit on your tractor that locates you by GPS and also if there is an engine problem and the "sequential parts Identification" is saying you cannot install aftermarket parts or different parts without their express approval. Also with the costs of "equipment at 250,000 and up I expect you to be able to get 20-30 years out of a piece of equipment. The real profits come when things are paid off and your expenses go way down.

Yes, gloves are clumsy and take practice. Doing fine work is possible. Ask any Hazmat tech or arctic rig worker. Places you lose body parts without gloves. Usually two pair. a liner glove and outer wear glove.

I see both sides of RTR. From a mechanic standpoint, I can easily see why manufacturer's want to limit what people can and can't do with machines. There are a lot of instances where people go cowboying off into modifying a machine to do things it simply wasnt meant to do and then want to turn on the manufacturer when things go sideways. Also from the mechanic standpoint, let me do what the customer wants me to do. Also from the mechanic standpoint, I'll do what the customer wants me to do, but don't come at me with a lawyer when those things cause loss or injury. All that said, it's easier to have certain aspects of the machine only be serviceable by the manufacturer or their representative. That keeps everybody safe.
Well That's Just Embarrassing
