Working on our Off Grid Cabin + Starting a New Garden in Northern Maine Woods

As Spring pushes on we continue to make progress on the cabin build and get more and more projects checked off our list! We've been wanting to start a new garden for a little while now to have the double the planting space, we decided to add it on top of everything else going on and get it done this year! We'll see if anything wants to grow through the many many rocks we have going on!

Gotta get a well!!! Running water makes an off grid cabin a home. Ya an outhouse is usable but when it’s -5 out flushing a toilet is a dream. Nothin like a shower cool in summer and hot in winter!!! I could live with propane stove, fridge and lights but water is a life changer!!!

Are the windows vinyl or wood? If they're vinyl, you'd have to clean, sand, and apply a bonding primer before you paint. Also, talk to the window rep to make sure you won't void any warranty before doing it.

They’re vinyl, I’ve watched so many different videos of women just wiping them down and spray painting that I was wondering if there was a good process. I figured sanding would help the paint adhere. I’m not sure on the warranty that’s a good question to ask!

@AGirlFromMaine A good bonding primer is key on vinyl, especially here in Maine with the ebb and flow of temperature and humidity. And you're right, sanding helps the paint adhere. Black does look sharp. 👍

Can you light a little fire and throw greens on it for smoke? For the bugs ?

If you are going to paint the window frames, I'd paint them before you put them in place. It will be easier and you would not get over spray on the walls. Black is nice but think about a deep rich red with a red door. This would add more color to the house as it weathers to grey. Steel roof or shakes or shingles?

I planned to do them before installing, I unfortunately am just not a red person, I grew up in a home where everything was beige and burgundy and I’m over it. The house will not turn grey as it will have a 30 year treatment done a stay a golden light brown color. We’ll have a green metal roof.
