Thank you for another awesome episode. I love biology and anything involving animals, but I also love learning about other things to. I like the whole show. A cool guest teaching us something intriguing and then a n amazing animal to learn about and see. I wish you had this show more often though, but I still love it. :)

Man, I remember that so fondly. I was still on Dialup! And using khtmlw (which sucked so much, but I hated Netscape), which eventually became khtml, which eventually turned into webkit and blink (so modern Safari and Chrome). We've gone a long way since then.

I mean how difficult could it be? Its just D&D 3.5 edition.
@rgrimund24686 жыл бұрын
kartman568, it's more like D&D 3.8. It makes improvements over 3.5 edition by streamlining a lot of things while remaining open to a whole lot of creativity. Any tabletop addition requires a lot of thought. It's very easy to have underwhelming mechanics or items and even easier for broken things. It takes a lot to implement something new in an existing system.
@craigcorson30366 жыл бұрын
The first half, you were talking about Mars. Mars has two moons, as you know - Phobos (Fear) and Deimos (Terror). The second half, you were talking about a frog which exhibits DEIMatic behavior - behavior meant to TERRORize other animals that might want to eat the frog. I can't believe that you didn't make that connection, Hank.

Here is a question for SciShow, what would happen to a person/living organism if you were to change their cell membranes from hydrophobic to hydrophilic?
@IceMetalPunk6 жыл бұрын
Cell membranes are not hydrophobic. They are made of two layers of amphiphilic chemicals. Amphiphilic means one side is hydrophobic and the other side is hydrophilic. That's why a 2-layered membrane forms: the hydrophilic side is attracted to the water while the hydrophobic side gets pushed away to touch the hydrophobic side of the second layer (as any water trapped between them would be attracted to the hydrophilic side and be pulled out). The only three configurations that reduce stress from these amphiphilic molecules in water are bilayers (like cell membranes), single-layer bubbles (which only work if the radius is no larger than the length of the molecule; otherwise there would be a gap in the middle for water to seep in and be kept away from the hydrophilic ends, causing strain), and a surface film (which only work at the surface of the water, where the hydrophobic sides can stick up into the air without displacing any water). Swapping which side is hydrophobic and which is hydrophilic wouldn't have too much effect; the molecules would just flip and the membrane as a whole would remain pretty stable. But if they were changed from amphiphilic to purely hydrophilic molecules? Well, whenever you have a hydrophilic molecule in water... it just dissolves. So if that happened, our cell membranes would dissolve and we'd die pretty quickly, and probably painfully. For completeness, even though you didn't ask about it: the last option is for them to become purely hydrophobic. Keep in mind oil is hydrophobic, and it's for that reason that oil and water don't mix. A hydrophobic substance in water will get pushed into small bubbles or a surface film, as water inside attracts water outside and pushes the substance out of the way in the process. So your cell membranes, if they suddenly became hydrophobic, would contract and collapse in on themselves as the water inside rushes out. There'd be no room for your organelles, including the nucleus. Everything would get "squished together", forcing bits into contact that shouldn't be and preventing other bits from moving where they need to go. You'd also die this way, though probably in a much slower way with various symptoms before death, unlike the dissolving that would happen in the other case we mentioned.
