10:18 I don't think ANY speedrun allows for save states. I think what Ben was talking about is that they do a throwaway run of a level to identify their strategy and then do the actual run of that level. Both runs count against their time. I'm sure the best XCOM speedrunners will have strategies to get through that level on the first try, to save on that reload time.

So the speedrunning chat was super interesting, so if anyone cares i'd like to add to the "What is the point?" question. Often the conversation around speedrunning ignores how runners run games they truely love and have played to death and back, for many speedrunning is simply a new way to experience our favourite games differently

Yup, I was watching some of those game devs react to speed runners (pretty sure it was the Doom Eternal devs if memory serves) and they ran the whole gambit of reactions starting with "why are they doing this?" before starting to see the appeal of it and wondering more about the speed running community and by the end of it they were wondering how they could design a game to actively assist in speed running. At one point one of them realized that it wasn't a case of players trying to blow through a game as quickly as possible, but rather the players having put so much time and effort into the game that they clearly love that they wanted to play it in a new way, that speed running isn't a slight against a game but rather how the runners show their love for it.

Heyo speedrunner here, Lewis brings up an interesting thought about the point of skipping portions of gameplay or glitching through walls (and it not being something he's interested in). There are a lot of games out there that specifically have different official categories to exclude certain game breaking glitches or even any of them at all! I think the closest example/solution for Lewis' critique (that I can think of) is that the Portal speedrunning leaderboards have separate categories for weather or not you can go out of bounds. However, a lot older games (i.e. NES, SNES) with smaller communities might only have one any% category that allows glitches which he might be referring to. Anyways thanks for reading!

13:00 It's a speedrun if you are trying to do a speedrun. There's no "point" where it's "no longer" one. If it took you 9h to do, then that was your time. It's not a good time (compared to the 1h record), but it's still a speedrun.

I know this is stupid, but I've ALWAYS wanted them to "work together" on these races. I love seeing friendly competition with no shittery, side by side racing, tight corners, I know every other racing game is better for that but I don't care, it's fun to see it in this "universe" so to speak. but there is no hope.....UNTIL NOW! Rythian, there's a reason speedruns have categories. If you don't like glitches, then don't look at/play the glitched categories. The reason some people do like those types is because it can be fun to find how you can minimize the time as much as possible - what's the fastest you can beat this game. Some end up being a few minutes because they just jump straight to the ending cutscene. Besides, I get that you disagree with clipping through walls... but how about using normal game mechanics in weird ways? In old Zelda games, you can get a jumping item... and it's meant to jump 1 space, but you can (even as a casual) get across a 2 wide pit with pretty precise timing. That's not as ridiculous as clipping through a wall. You might be ok with that.

@@louiemalgre2797 I mean, I think it turned into that, but initially I think his point was that, in a glitched run where you skip things, you aren't actually PLAYING the game. Not in its entirety. It's like if you were running a marathon and just took a shortcut to the finish line. Just because you started at the start and crossed the finish line doesn't mean you actually RAN the race. I can see that logic. If you jump straight to the ending cutscene, did you really beat the game? Or did you just skip the whole thing? It feels like, by that logic, I could load up a save file that a friend played and left right at the end and be like "well, here I am at the ending cutscene". I have no issues with glitched speedruns. I think they're interesting, but I can understand the...philosophical (maybe?) argument of whether you actually played the game or not.

Speedruns do have different categories with different rules but the most popular category is usually the one that allows you to use all the games' mechanics

Depends on the game. For example, the game with your namesake has Hero Mode Any% as the most popular category for Jak 3, which skips over 50% of the game. I agree with Rythian to an extent; I enjoy glitched runs, but when you get stuff like OoT or Majora Any%, then it's just a bit *too* glitched to be enjoyable, both to play AND watch.

Using Oot for example, the no wrong warp and all dungeons speedruns come out of the game being 'too glitchy' or with the banning of RBA in 100% which turned the runs really boring.

Have the Yogs collectively forgotten the point of speedruns? It's been a few videos of them arguing against speedrunning as a concept, ignoring the fact that categories exist for a reason. If "any%" is on a run, literally (pretty much) anything goes, so long as you can get to the ending of the game. In some games this involves a glitch in the main menu that zips you to the credits, but since people find that less fun, they include categories like "any% no main menu glitch". The idea that all speedrunning is just formless and without rules is ridiculous; the whole point is to have people compete on the same grounds, and in games with RNG, making RNG work in their favour to get the fastest time. Whether you enjoy watching this or not is up to you.

For the super tall tube you are supposed to wall ride it all the way up not vertically but horizontally with an angle. It takes longer but it will get you there every time.

Speed runs help give life to games that have long since passed general viability. If you don't like glitched speed runs or feel that they are not your thing I highly recommend anyone to check out the glitchless runs. there are always a glitchless category for a game and in most games as a result you will see some MASTERFUL play.
