Hill An' Gully Rider -- Edric Connor. Such a great rendition. I watched as a youngster, and it impacted meaningfully then, and more so now at 63. A tremendous film this was. Great shanties from the beginning of the film. None of the later interpretations come close to this film.

I love this movie! Half because of the cool whaling songs. Why don't we sing while we work these days? It would bring a measure of joy to the tedium of laboring at boring jobs.

Blame the radio....people sang ALL the time before the Radio. Mother sang around the house, kids sang on there way to school, men would sing at the pubs and barbershops. When families traveled by horse drawn wagon they sang.. Then came the radio

Mr. Stubb and Mr. Flask are yelling at their men to row, but Mr. Starbuck is practically whispering.

stubb and starbuck have so different ways to motivate their sailors to highest results. stubb relies on smack talking like boxing trainer during sparring and starbuck just gives the tempo. the same thing is discribed in the book, but in the book stubbs mood was dependent on how good his pipe was lit.

That would be quite the rush after harpooning a whale and riding out it's desperate attempt to get away-albeit with the risk of going overboard or getting smashed to pieces by the whale's tail but probably the thrilling part of life for any old hand whaler. Amazing how life on the sea created it's own language, style, culture, songs, beliefs. Too bad I had to be born a landlubber in very landlocked Missouri. Didn't touch ocean water until I was 34 years old and it felt magical.

I've lived within 60 miles of the Ocean all my life, as soon as you get within a few miles and smell the salt air, your whole attitude changes like a Jimmy Buffet song, but have never seen a whale except a Beluga at an aquarium.
