Working with an Intellectual Disability

Southland Disability Enterprises in Invercargill employs over 80 people who live with a disability. For Mary-Ellen Joyce & Neville Clode, who were both born with Down Syndrome, it’s much more than just a workplace - it’s an extended family. In this episode, Mary-Ellen, Neville, boss Hamish, and their families introduce us to the workshop that has been the heart of their routine and social life for over twenty years, talking frankly about the challenges of independence and caregiving.

Mary’s brother and law is awesome!! The fact he told his wife that they should bring in her sister when their parents passed shows how great of a person he is. Now 22 years later they are still still a happy household of 3.
