Cockle burrs are the seed pods for the plants. The only way to keep them from spreading to your home pasture is to rake them up and burn them. leaving them around is on the ground is just spreading them. Good luck.

You’ll want to pull all the cockleburr stalks and burn them before they go to seed. You’ll have to do this a few years in a row to really get rid of them

Hey Allen. Love your channel. I’ve been a horse owner for many years and have owned and worked a lot of horses. I do want to tell you that their is a product that women use called “skin so soft” that works very good in helping with cocklebur removal. I put it in a spray bottle and spray them down and with a little pressure they pull right out. Hope this helps. Lowell

There were stickers all over our property when we bought. We took old carpet, laid some chain link fence on top of it with some cinder blocks. Then drug it all over the pasture. Took a few years and several times a year to get rid of all of them. Love the Crazy Dance. lol Sure hope your head is better. Wow!

Also think about digging out the bushes out and burning them is a safe place. I dig out a few every year and slowly have less each year. It's a job but easier than taking them off the horse.

The burr plant is probably burdock, and the root is edible, quite sweet & medicinal, common in spring tonics and good for the liver. If you can dig them up you’re more likely to be rid of them, since that root grows bigger over the years. Check it out!

So glad you are ok!!! Our dogs get those cocklebur too, it's the worst!! No matter how much you brush them they get them every spring. We burned a lot of our weeds last year that really helped get rid of a lot of them on our property but I don't know how that would even work for a large field.

Wow I had to comment before the video. Someone didn't like the crazy dance. And she will not happy. Do not feel bad I'm 64 in July and I still roll up my pants. You have got some fancy dance moves there and take it slow around them. Another secret is hand all kinds of flapping stuff around the fields and barn this will help the babies as will to get use of unexpected movements. I put some by their feed and drinking area. That is some nasty hit you got. Looks like Coco Braziel must be looking down on and laughing seeing the new new version of the famous "Coco Butt". I'm glad it wasn't worst. Thank you for this very interesting video. I have seen the video of Amy's crazy dance. The only thing that should have been mention is to move slow at first. Because horse can swing there hind end so fast you would see it coming. We use to play kick the ball around the horses in the space about 70 x 100 and let them run around. Some times the ball will roll under and around their feet. If the ball was airborne it would it the walls or rafters and make noice. Or even bounce off them. By the end of 3 months they were in a parade of 150 and between 1000s of people with balloons and flags streamers. Anyway. Great video. Hit if you let oil (bady oil hair conditioner) soap for a few hours will make it easier. And if you can cut those cockleberry bushes out before the go to seed and burn what you pull out of their mains and tails so they don't grow. Have fun wish I could help.😊

Hi Alan and Vicki. I just love your farm and the rescuing of the horses. I grew up with Registered Quarter Horses and my dad was a 50 year breeder. When we got cuckle burrs we used WD40 spray on their mane and tails and they pulled out great. We would put the cuckle burrs in a coffee can and gas and my dad would burn them. Your farm reminds me of my childhood . And the red metal comb is for shedding hair on one side and the other is a sweat scrape. After a bath you. Use the smooth side and scrape off the excess water. God Bless you all and keep up the great work. Take care. Sharon Anderson from Mayetta Kansas.

Maybe a good quality fabric softener would help to loosen up the cockle burrs so removal would be more nearly possible. Mowing the green cockle burrs plants BEFORE the burrs “ set on “ is a sensible preventative measure. That’s what my dad used to do on the farm.

We got my Palomino back in March. She sat for a little bit before we bought her but after the first couple rides with her, she decided one day to buck off my husband. I understand that horses have their vices and spooks, or even just off days. However, ever since that buck my confidence level has been as low as it gets. I’m almost afraid of even catching her and brushing her off. She’s a very sweet, in your pocket, kind of mare but it definitely startled me. Any advice?? Alan, very nice dance 😂😂 just checked our Amrys channel. And I think Mrs. Vicki’s reaction was a lot cooler than what mine would have been! Lol be careful, Alan.

Removing Cockleburs We have found a way to remove the cockleburs from horse manes and tails. You will need some inexpensive tools: cooking oil/corn oil, a squeeze bottle and a horse hair comb or horse hair rake. Pour the cooking oil in the squeeze bottle. Start combing at the bottom of the mane or tail and comb up to the bottom of the burr or mat. This way the bur will slide free of the rest of the hair. Pour the cooking oil from your squeeze bottle just above and onto the mat and burs, doesn’t take much. Use the comb or rake to comb out the burs from the mat. It takes some coaxing.. May be something to try. Thank You for another great video

Unsolicited advice here....get checked out for a concussion...that was a hard impact to your head, causing a headache...concussions can have consequences. I am caregiver for my adult brother who had a bunch of rowdy 4th grade classmates fall off choir risers onto him 41 yrs ago....he's had Epileptic seizures ever since...brain surgery, an implant, medications... I found him on the floor in his room yesterday (we had stormy weather and that sets it off worse, along with motorcycles passing the house/other loud sounds and flashing lights)....pure nightmare....he has seizures DAILY.... If you or your family members were in a car crash and hit your head(s), you'd get checked out.....this is absolutely no different...closed head injuries can be subtle....

I am so sorry you got hit in the head like that those kind of accidents happen when you have lots of horses it comes right out of the blue and get you I hope you're feeling better. I did want to tell you about those cockleburrs when I was growing up we had tons of them in our backfield it didn't matter how hard we tried they come back one would turn into a hundred but the thing that will work on those horses so they don't lose their manes and Tails is Crisco LeatherUp Crisco really good and let it sit on their main and soften those covers up and you can pick them right out it's amazing anyway good luck with the cockleburrs I hope you feel better God bless you and keep you safe it might have been a lot worse but you had your guardian angel with you ;-)
