You said test the blue/white and brown/white. Then you said or test the white/blue and white/brown. Those are the same wires. Did you mean solid blue and solid brown?

Different standards. The first colour is the main colour and the second is the stripe. If you have no stripe, it is just the first colour. As an example, in some countries it is blue/white and white/blue pair. In others it is a blue and white/blue pair.

I was surprised to see a voltage from a cable not plugged into a PD (Powered Device). From what I have been reading about PoE, the PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment) does not supply power unless it sees the PD.

+Kevin Rose yes Kevin I believe your are correct. When I made this video, I was not using a POE switch, but instead I was using an in-expensive POE injector. Maybe they are not as smart.

Passive power is provided all the time. Active power is only provided if the PSE detects a 5 ohm resistance.

If I cut off one end of a Cat 5 cable, strip the ends off and connect them to a terminal junction block, plug the connected into a switch, place my leads on 4,5 and 7,8, should I see the voltage. I'm using a Fluke 175 true RMS multimeter.

Hi ! I'm from Colombia , i tried your method but i can't to measure the voltage !! i don't know what i do wrong

Many POE switches are smart enough not to send the voltage on the line when there is no device plugged in. However, when I did this video, I was using an injector (not as smart as a poe switch) ;-)Great question. Glad you mentioned that. 😀

Where can I get a test port like the one you're putting your voltmeter leads on? What is it called?

Thats just an old fashioned 8-wire “biscuit” jack. Don’t use them much any more. They were common for T-1 and 56K lines. GRAYBAR would be the first place I would look.

can i hook up a 12 volt usb car charger to cat5e ethernet cable and charge my phone ?
@DIYTelecom7 жыл бұрын
+Dustin dalessandro Nice idea! But, I don’t think that will work for two reasons: 1. The line is supplying 48volts. So it would burn out the 12v charger. 2. Most POE equip will only send the electricity down the line after its confirmed a valid network device has been attached on the far end. Thanks for commenting! :-)
