I do it outside and use gloves and use two cloth masks and then a surgical mask on top ( I'm too poor to buy the expensive painters ones) and I use goggles and use an old paint shirt and some long pants is that good enough protection of working with resin?

You mentioned that making resin should be done in a closed room.. I don't have that capabibilty. I have two kids so does that mean I'm not able to pursue resin making because I don't have a separate room to do so? Is it still harmful while it sets up? Where I'll be doing it is connected to my living room. Kinda bummed out if this is the case :(

I had been using all the precautions but obviously I have missed something..... the resin in the file was something that I didn't really take much notice of...... just goes to show that the strong chemicals will get in to some degree..... any tips on where i go from here........

I'm sorry, I guess could wear gloves while handling it and sanding. Wash well afterwards would be my suggestion. Also wetsanding will keep down any dust particles.

Be sure to use Nitrile gloves! The ones the printers usually come with are latex and they're not stopping the resin form coming through if you use them. I found a 12 pack on Amazon of some heavy duty ones for less than $20 that I just keep next to my printer.
@spaghettijustice4 жыл бұрын
Want to add to this as I just learned that reusing the same gloves without proper cleaning will eventually build up and may peak through! Make sure to clean them and change them out every so often if you decide to pick up some re-useables!

Hey. I plan on working with resin to make small crafts like coasters, keychains, combs etc for a small business. Respiraters are crazy expensive in my region + not available easily either. Is it okay if i do the project on a terrace and wear a regular surgical mask (like the ones we wear due to covid)? Or maybe even a N95?

hey love your videos! i have a question! ive seen lots of videos where people recommend wearing a respirator but is it necessary when youre doing sownthing small? im panning on making hair clips so the mold to make them is small. i would just use use a regular make and do it outdoors? Is this safe ?
@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS4 жыл бұрын
If I'm honest and you will see many people say otherwise but after 20 years experience, small projects casting or sanding especially since doing outdoors no I dont feel needed. Inside the fumes Can get bad but do can 2 part epoxy glue. Gloves on other hand is a must to not get casting resin on skin. Be safe and have fun.

And what about small projects (jewels, decorative objects) that don't involve sanding, can they be done in the space you live and share with family everyday for example in kitchen? Or it requires a special isolated place also? As a beginner I don't have separate room/space for that :) Thank you...

So I have an N95 mask (purchased pre covid-19) and two bramd new carbon filters I've never even taken out of the plastic packages they come in. I've seen several websites say I'll get cancer or die if I don't SPECIFICALLY use one of those 100+$ resperators. I'd only be making small things outside my house in wind, like earrings or coasters or keychains and it'd be my first time using resin to make something artsy and not gluing my computer together. I really want to get into this hobby, but if it'll kill me in the long run then why bother? I'm scared to get started and wonder if you think the N95 mask+carbon filter would keep me safe. Especially if I stay downwind. (Which I would do anyway because what I've used in the past is literally vomit inducing.)

I was so ready to start resin art, now I’m worried about my pets and their safety. The only place I can work with resin is in the kitchen with the door wide open, will this be ok if I keep them away from the table I’m working on and have the door open the whole time? 😓😓

I would suggest wet sanding will keep down any dust to your work area, when trimming parts just have down a towel to collect bits or residue and just clean up when done and should be good. None of my pets have messed with the resin but definitely wet sand... Yiur fingers will look like prunes but won't have any dust laying around.

@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS5 жыл бұрын
I don't myself, major Sanding definatly .
@ivanalvarez55114 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you don’t work with chemicals for a living then you better, at a minimum, look up the SDS. Most epoxy produces/contains fumes/products that may cause acute symptoms like irritation and eye damage and long term symptoms like respiratory sensitization and cancer. Just because it is “food safe” if cured properly or doesn’t have a strong smell doesn’t mean it’s not incredibly dangerous. Use all suggested PPE by the manufacturer not some KZbinr. Goggles, skin protection, ANSI rated respirator for the chemical you’re working with. Often times the components of Epoxy are more dangerous alone than when mixed and cured.

Hi dave why do you suggest decreasing the parts again for a second time before priming. And would you recommend alclad or enamel primers instead of acrylics for resin parts?
@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS6 жыл бұрын
The alclad primer should be lacquer which I suggest using especially if using lacquer paint over. I suggest washing second time to clean off dust from Sanding and oils from hands handling.

are procedure masks reallt safe to use??
@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS4 жыл бұрын
Anything that will block the resin dust from entering nose or mouth is. There are people that say only way to be safe is gas mask and others that say you don't need anything but I've been working with garage kits for 20 years and this is my findings.
@jinxc0re3484 жыл бұрын

@ivanalvarez55114 жыл бұрын
clydeydays dude, don’t ask a youtuber about safety, are you nuts? Check the SDS yourself. You most likely need a respirator. Dust masks will only hold off relatively large particles. Fume particulates will go right through. While it might sound like common sense that while sanding you only need a dust mask don’t be so sure. Heating of most resins will create fumes from thermal breakdown of the material. So again, respirator.

@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS4 жыл бұрын
Not much other than sealing in airtight container whick usually recommended anyway to extend life of mold and keep from drying and cracking. Usually tho if use a spray release agent will keep the silicone from absorbing fumes.

I've heard about resin is very unhealthy. It's why I try I don't buy these resin figures/kits. I do have one of those heavy duty 3M masks with those charcoal filters on the side since I feel like a dust mask isn't as good. Wouldn't it be better to also get an air purifier and also a spray booth as well? I agree that washing with water and dish soap for any model kit (resin, GunPla, etc) is very useful.
@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS6 жыл бұрын
I need a new air purifier in room when I can afford as last one just wore out after 10 years but yes that helps because even Sanding plastic you get dust. And if I'm using dremel I crank on air booth to suck up dust. Thanks for watching.
