Love his older stuff, should release more of material like this

He should have put this and Child Bride on the record and made it 12 songs. This is the best song from the Nebraska sessions. Just staggering.

Should have been on the album. I think it's as great as any of his unreleased songs.

This is a great song. He should do a Expanded Nebraska Album. I would!!! Are you listening Bruce?

I don't feel we will see an expanded "Nebraska." What is more likely to occur is a mammoth "Born In The USA" box set where they will include the rest of the "Nebraska" demo tape, plus some if not all of the "Nebraska" tunes that they cut in the studio with the band in the spring of 1982. In the spring of 1982 The Boss seriously considered putting out a double record. One album would be "Nebraska," and the other record would be the best of the rock tunes they had recorded up to that point. 8 of the 12 songs from "Born In The USA" were in the can by May 1982. He also had a number of songs that became outtakes like "My Love Will Not Let You Down" (which he says should've have been put on BITUSA), "This Hard Land," "Wages Of Sin," "Murder Inc." "Frankie" and a number of other songs which are better than tunes that ended up on the BITUSA album (despite its sales).

As great as "Losin' Kind" is, what do you remove from a perfect record like "Nebraska"? They would've needed to dump something because in the vinyl era, you couldn't go much beyond 20 to 22 minutes per side without impairing the sound. Trying to get the "Nebraska" demo tape on to vinyl was a total nightmare. Bruce said in a Rolling Stone interview that they almost just had to release the "record" as a cassette tape. I also feel that "Child Bride" is vastly superior to "Working On The Highway," the BITUSA song that "Child Bride" morphed into. You also have to seriously consider the album's running time when releasing a folk-style record. I think one of the things that bogged down the "Tom Joad" album (in addition to it lacking the unique atmosphere of the "Nebraska" demo tape which was due to a number of mistakes) is that it was too long. A record like that needs to be 40 minutes or less or listeners tend to check out.

The pictures are by David Michael Kennedy who shot the Nebraska cover, and also some of these other pics of Bruce in upstate NY.

The last line in the song is brilliant "Now luck ain't much good to you when it's the losing kind" reminds me of the last line in the song "Up the Junction" by squeeze

@jrpipik He did sort of put it on Nebraska as the first line from this became "My name is Joe Roberts, I work for the state.." which is the first line in Highway Patrolman, track 5 on Nebraska!! But I can also see the lyrical links to Highway 29. Good old Bruce, keeping us on or toes.

With 17 songs, he had to leave something off. I keep hoping they'll release an expanded version with all the songs he left off plus the full band recordings. Bruce rewrote it as"Highway 29" on Ghost of Tom Joad.

"Losin' Kind" is still a better song than "Highway 29." A mistake on Bruce's part. "Tom Joad" has some really good tunes, but it has never worked as an album for me because it lacks the funky atmosphere of the "Nebraska" album which was a faulty demo tape.

But it's not as good. This is my idea. Put out a "Nebraska" box set with the entire "Nebraska" demo tape plus the "Electric Nebraska" songs with the E Streeters (regardless of what Bruce feels - let the fans decide). Then put out the most anticipated box ever for "Born in the USA". Bruce is sitting on 35-40 unreleased tunes. Some of them like "Sugarland", "Richfield Whistle" and "Unsatisfied Heart: (recorded as BAND versions but never bootlegged) are among the best tunes he ever composed. He also has a mess of songs like "King's Highway" and "Ida Rose" that were shortlisted for the Tracks box. He just couldn't place that many BITUSA tunes on "Tracks." It was the most prolific period for him.

I would've added this and Child Bride to Nebraska. I know some folks dig the song that Child Bride morphed into, Working On the Highway, but I just prefer Child Bride. Also, there were numerous songs from the spring 1982 BITUSA recording sessions like "This Hard Land," "My Love Will Not Let You Down," "Frankie" and "Murder Inc." that could've replaced Working On the Highway.

or replaced My Hometown with, or Darlington County. I think all four of those would have been better choices, esp. Murder Inc. and My Love Will Not Let You Down. And it's too bad that this and Born In The U.S.A. couldn't have made Nebraska. And I agree, Child Bride is great too.
