I have been a Safetyman for 25 years. I have seen this, but never with large animals, always with men. The young man and his Dad in the hole was deeply concerning to me. Heavy equipment operating on the edge of the hole can lead to a grave for all in the hole very quickly. I am not judging, I would have likely done nothing different in the adrenalin rushed time you spent helping. Over my years. I have seen this kind of teamwork and heroism. God was with you that day Jim, and certainly your neighbors and horses. Thank you for your cool mind and quick thinking. Sent with respect.

My grandfather had 2 working horses years ago and one of them slipped into the river that was the back border of the pasture. The bank was about 10 foot down and we did a very similar thing with straps and a tractor to pull him out. After we pulled him out, except for being muddy he suffered no ill affects from this incident.

Wonderful ending to one ugly situation. Horses and all humans are really fortunate the sides of that hole did not collapse. Here in the Ottawa region city safety officials are paranoid about trench wall braces. Considering the space confinement and the weights of those animals its amazing no bones were broken. I read this comment and said to myself in wonder: “wow! That’s how I think!” I felt blessed to think somebody thinks and does like me. Then I looked at the author and was disappointed to find is was me. It made me chuckle, but nobody liked it so probably other people don’t check on the ending if the book or the movie on video is too scary.

I'm glad the horses were able to walk away! Accidents happen with big animals all the time, even when you'd think nothing can go wrong or have done something a million times. Especially when working with animals, as well trained as they can be they're still animals and will react in unexpected ways. This could've been much, much worse and I'm glad it wasn't!
