HE Governor Nathif Jama, Defense CS Aden Duale and Transport PS Mohamed Daghar this morning conducted a tour of the Garissa Airstrip ahead of major renovation works to upgrade the facility constructed in 1984 into a modern commercial airport.
The trio were joined by Township MP Major Dekow Barrow, Kenya Airports Authority CEO/MD Henry Ogoye and the Vice Chief of Defense Forces Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi.
Speaking during the event, Governor Nathif Jama said in line with his election promise, his administration was working together with the Kenya Airports Authority to modernize and upgrade the airstrip into a modern commercial airport to allow it handle larger aircraft.
The Governor noted that inadequate infrastructure has proved to be an impediment in carrying out fully-fledged commercial aircraft operations in Garissa despite the enormous demand for regular flights from residents.
He said a booming airport would allow Garissa to become a business and tourist hub for the region and the airport would expand opportunities for gainful employment of the youth of Garissa County as well as ensuring reliable air connectivity to the rest of the country.
The County Government will put up an ultra-modern passenger terminal while KAA will extend the runway to 1.4 Km, build a perimeter wall and a gate and set up other supporting infrastructure.
Transport PS Mohamed Daghar and Defense CS Aden Duale lauded Governor Nathif Jama’s persistence and leadership to see the realization of the project which they said will bring enormous benefits to Garissa town.
