Good message. As a photographer, safety glasses are a must when I'm working around the house. I don't use hearing and breathing protection as much.

Yeah, I need to use safety glasses outside the shop more, particularly doing yard work. I always use hearing protection running gas yard equipment, but rarely eye protection.

I was in seminar once entitled “Safe Material Use, How to Retire with All of Your Digits”. Good video !

Thanks Todd! Yeah, I didn't really cover anything in this video about safe equipment/material handling, other than perhaps the jewelry/clothes aspect. Not cutting off fingers (or anything else for that matter) is a high priority too. :-)

@@HouseOfHacks ive had a whole glove sucked inside a machine before, i was very close to loosing my hand. i still dont understand when to use glove and when not to. this is a very badly explained topic.

Yikes! I hope your hand healed well. My understanding is: if it turns, no gloves.

@@HouseOfHacks problem is working all day and year on certain machine is born to get the skin raw and the hands in bad shape. that particular machine heated the piece very quickly as it was worked. i researched into the no-glove/glove topic before, but didnt reach a conclusion with industrial settings. i know some machine work should be revisited as they are made without safety in mind, but do we have the means to invent safety measure to stop-gap those currently existing?

That intro cracks me up.

Yeah, you're easily amused.

at work we used to say: "one monkey didnt see anything, one didnt hear anything and one didnt say anything. Why? lack of PPE that's why." also each time we saw someone without glasses on or earmuff we yelled "what happened to your PeePee!?" as in P-PE

Haha, love that riff on the see-no-evil idea. And that question is a great way to help hold each other accountable.

@@HouseOfHacks we've all had a piece of something stuck in our eye one time or another. they dont grow back! we must take care of them and being in a dangerous work environment we must protect ourselves. i know i am a culprit too of acting like a joe-cool and didnt wore my plugs nor my glasses for a long time. i now have tinitus and i have seen one of my colleague in the hospital for 3hours getting his eyes scrubbed with q-tip to remove epoxy paint. its not fun! i now wisen up and dont care to look like a safety savvy at least ill still be alive and kicking in 20years. thank you for this video also, the more we complain the more safety become mainstream and easily accepted. i now wear eyeplugs and glasses mowing and weed-wacking. this must get widely practices as it is common sense.

You forgot a welding cap.

If you're going to be welding, that would have a safety video all its own.

Breathing protection is arguably more important than eye or hearing protection. You can live without your eyes and/or ears, but not your lungs.
@Francois_Dupont5 жыл бұрын
being blind and deaf isnt a good life either. all protection is a must in all required situation. ive worked in a plant were the air inside was so contaminated our breath smelled of glue the whole weekend after work hours. the bosses were legally obligated to give us gas-mask, but nobody was told about it. more work need to be done to directly communicate to workers and never rely on the company.
@HouseOfHacks5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get what you're saying, but don't think I'd want to do without any of them. :-) I'm guessing breathing protection doesn't get as much attention since, like hearing, usually the effects are cumulative over time and aren't as immediately noticeable. (Other than some toxic chemical cases.)

Bad attitude. None of the senses should be sacrificable.
@HouseOfHacks5 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I don't think anyone here is saying to sacrifice a sense and I think we'd all support use of PPE. I think Christopher's point is there's built in redundancy with eyes and ears and, push comes to shove, you can live without them. Not that that's desirable. But you can't live without lungs. In spite of this, breathing protection doesn't get as much press as eye and ear protection.
