Mate, thank you so much for this video! I've been struggling with my Bosch plunge saw for ages. I even tried making a mark on the scale at the real 0, but that wasn't much more consistent. So simple to adjust, now that you've shown me, but it's made the world of difference. Keep it up and good luck. 👍

-1 deg cut is very handy for jobs onsite when nothing’s square! You want the face to look perfect and having it cut backwards let’s you have some wiggle room and handy for glue etc..

Thanks for explaining the squares issue of the Bosch track saw. I have been looking all over the internet for information about this subject but could not find any info. Someone on a Dutch woodworking forum referred to this video. I called Bosch and they admit having problem with calibration there track saws. If it's possible can you make a separate video about this issue and how to setup the angle after calibrating the saw? Have tried to find a way to with a digital angle gauge to setup the angle but havent find a fool proof method. I also thing there is a correlation between the force you applied on the handle of the saw and the angle. I made some test cuts with 30mm plywood, during cutting i had some issue with pushing the saw, because of the thickness of the material and the resistance of the saw and the guide. So by applying more force on the front handle you can see the i some cases that the angle going of the 0 degree and into the -1.

Hi John, another brilliant video, my reason for this comment refers to the 1 degree negative angle setting on the Bosch saw. Now I am not a professional, but since buying one of these saws the only use I can come up with this "could " be for when you're hanging a door. You would be able to put a 1 degree negative angle on the leading edge of the door to get a closer /neater gap when the door is fully closed. I have not tried it yet but I have a bedroom door to change soon and I am going to give it a go, I'll let you know how I get on.

@@JohnMcGrathManInShed I tried this out, however no matter which way I turned the screw and how much it did not change it, if any it made it worse, I found the only way I could get it to be plumb was to put a router bit plastic sleeve under the plate, about half a millimeter. btw plus one for bench dogs for rail makes a huge difference

The bench dog track dogs are great, I had the same issue and now it's a thing of the past. I also reccomend the bench dogs MFT fence a real game changer for repeated cuts.
@ThekiBoran
@ThekiBoran 3 жыл бұрын
I bought the Benchdogs mft fence. It's definitely a nice system. One issue is the smaller sections of fence don't fit together in a straight line. It's a but concave on the scale side of the fence. I'll try using a straight next time as I bolt it together but it might create a gap and throw off the scale down the line. I also purchased 2 1000mm sections of fence. Their flag stops are good but they need to be a bit beefier, there's a bit of deflection. Their bench dogs fit nicely in 20mm holes. Other brands are quite sloppy. My work bench grid is not accurate enough to use rail dogs and the Benchdogs fence which is why I'm going to try the Parf Guide system and build a new top.
@ecuadorianme

And about the rail dogs and fence of benchdogs I can only agree with what everyone has said. Great system even though I use the Festool Saw and track, I still prefer having the dogs under the rail. I don't bother with the B collars though. I made simple rings in the woods thicknesses I use most to put around the rail dogs.

I've got the Festool, it's nice. Especially like how it's anti static, constant static shocks on a standard hose do get annoying. I'm really liking the expanding Rockler Universal Hose, I've got it set up on a boom arm over by workbench. An added benefit is blocking the hose with my hand causes it to retract out the way.

Thanks for video update John. Enjoying your content. I had a similar problem with my Makita track saw not cutting square, that I only noticed after chopping up a couple of sheets of MDF ... Arghhh! I check it with a square quite regularly now and also do test cuts. I think Peter Millard (10 minute workshop) covered this when he did a budget tracksaw series a while back. Brexit is not great in the UK either, prices are up and it’s more difficult to get some tools. Hopefully will sort itself out eventually.

Hi John, A cheap & simple solution to your hose's snagging on the edges of the table is that even if you've chamfered or used a small radius round over bit in your router, is to use the biggest radius round over bit that you can get your hands on! It'll put a larger rounded surface for the hose to easily slide over without snagging

The one big plus with the bosche is that it wont cut the track strip back further when cutting at 45°. Even with the festool and every other saw ive used the moment you cut at 45° you cant line the plastic/rubber edge precisely on your mark anymore when doing your 90° cuts, you have to line it up 1/8 away from your mark. The bosche lines up precisely on your mark no matter the angle.

Awesome videos. Keep up the good work. A couple of things to keep in mind with your mft table that I’ve learned from mine. Don’t keep too many tools exposed on the side of your table. When you are gluing up a big project you can drip glue on your tools. Same with the dog holes if you have tools underneath. I have cubbies under my table and I’ve put doors on them to stop finish and glue dripping.

For the vacuum hose that catches on everything, you might look at a "central vacuum hose sock". They sell these on E-bay and they're meant for use with central vac systems to keep the hose from catching on & marring furniture legs and mopboards. They come in 30' lengths for less than US$30.00. Believe it should fit over a 1.5" hose but haven't tried it myself. Really enjoy your channel!

I'll be sticking with my shop vac and Home Depot Dust Stopper 5 gallon pail lid for a bit longer - maybe forever:(! That said, I don't know if available in Ireland, but the Oneida SuperCell really looked good to me when I was thinking about a serious dust collector. But the price point was just too high for the amount of woodworking I do. Still, maybe someday:). Thanks for the Bosch track saw info. Very helpful. I love the saw and tracks, but those issues you mentioned really take the joy out of owning the tool when you consider the cost. Still, I don't plan on getting a different saw, as forewarned is forearmed, and after watching your VLOG I am forearmed, so thank you!

Great vlog!!! Just bought the veritas mk2 honing guide ( using diamond stone) still learning how to use it tried it with my no.6 Luban and no.5 and no4 getting good results but... it's still new. For the bosch issue I'm checking all my power tools for 90 with engineered square all the time I don't trust the manufacturer set-up ( except my metabo mitre saw), and it's odd that bosch have got that issue with high hand tool!! For the condensetion broblem I'm thinking of two solutions : insulation to you metal ceiling, or dehydrated the air in your shop ( not chip solutions). Good to see your channel is growing - well deserved in my opinion. I has a similar problem with the roof in my workshop on really cold days, it always seems to accumulate where the roof panel meets the purlin, guess it is just a limitation of the anti-drip fabric. In the end I installed insulation sheets between the purlins and then panelled the inside of the roof. Spray foam may be another option, not sure on costs though. For the dust extraction, I use the rockler hose system which is ribbed, but I use a v-roller clamped to the end of the bench or on a stand to stop it snagging. With a central workbench could you not come over the top with a suspended system and drop down? You could do that with the electrics as well, there are retractable extension leads available, do come at quite a price though.

@@JohnMcGrathManInShed good luck with the hinges. I don’t know if anyone else has said but the -1degree tilt is for when you’re doing a visible join, like counter tops, helps the join to be invisible as less material underneath to meet in the join. Hope that makes sense!

Hi John, Great advice on the tools, again. I don’t have a solution for the corrugated hose pipe for the vacuum, but I did put an extension on mine and it gives me great freedom. I draped the hose over 2 hooks in the ceiling so it hangs down. This usually stops it from catching on the table or work piece. I got old hoses from the council recycling center off old vacuums. If you have WiFi in you shed could you explain how it’s installed. I have a second router wired off my main router but it has never worked right. Seems like rocket science to me😡👍👍

I'll be interested to see your results with the t-nut dogs. I've tried them for my home made mft table and I found them to be so precise that the track easily gets jammed when trying to lower it and raise it between each cut, or if I loosen one up to allow it to move smoothly then the track drops level with the table and then you have to remember to use spacers to keep it from doing that. In the end it is just too finicky. So I'd love to see how it works for you and if you figure out to work around those issues. I love the videos and enjoy the content please keep all the great info coming!

Well another great video! - I’m so glad you are honest about your tools, it’s a welcome change. I’m also glad to hear that you refuse to be controlled by manufacturers/sponsors. Thing is John, there are 1000’s of viewers who trust you (me included) as you strive to get your own perfect hobby workshop, a journey 1000’s of hobbyists are on, a journey that never seems to end!! So at the end of the day, you are one of us, just people in our sheds, striving for that perfect workshop, buying what we can afford. I bought the Veritas mkII/faithful diamond stones after watching one of your videos so I can see why manufacturers want you to promote their products, you are a very credible influencer. But control your videos ?? - I would be seething mad if I had bought any product after seeing a “controlled video” particularly if it had issues. Often tools do develop issues after a period of use and it’s great you are honest about what you find. I’m impressed with the Veritas Mk2 and if I eventually have to change the brass runners, I’m ok with that. Not a lot more to say other than I’ve run a hose from above for my hand power tools and (for me) it works great!! Finally, track saws........ I like the idea but there is no way I’d get rid off my Scheppach 2500 table saw!! Stay safe my friend, don’t get too friendly with the Whiskey! As you say, we’re all in the same boat & hopefully we will get through it.

Hi John, Grand channel and I really look forward to the updates and love the whiskey channel as well🥃. I have a similar situation with my workshop/garage. I plumbed a dust extraction system to my mitre station and other tools on the bench using similar ducting to yourself and my dust extractor is the twin motor Camvac from Record power, and very similar to the DX4000. However my issue is also getting easy extraction to my central work bench, which has my table saw, router table and sanding base. Rather than buy another CamVac or DX4000, I was planning an up and over ducting connected to the CamVac and then attach a Rockler hose which easily attaches and detaches to a duct system in my workbench. Just by using blast gates I can then divert suction to the individual tools on the work bench. Have you thought about that solution rather than buying another dust extractor which can be expensive for a good one. I think the CamVac twin motor or DX4000 should easily be strong enough to give good suction? Or are separate systems better? Keep up the good work John one of the best channels for hobbyists. From half a paddy living in Sweden. 🍻😀 stay safe

Been looking at track saws for a year. Skill Builder did a good survey. Severe health issues delayed go ahead but almost ready to buy to make lots of cabinets and wardrobes for self and friends with payments to cover tools and materials. The Bosch seems to suffer from being budget Mafell both in materials and quality control so it doesn't compete with Mafell. It's a pattern across all the brands - each one is good to best on some areas then fills out their range with products that they buy in and re-badge. We can't stick with one brand - which is ok for corded, not so good for cordless toolkits. That can mean buying from different suppliers if they focus on certain brands

I have the Benchdog rail dogs and I find that they can be difficult to pull in and out. If you can fit your Bosch tracksaw onto a Festool track then it would probably also fit onto Evolution tracks, which are much less expensive that Festool tracks. The FFX website has a chart showing that they are compatible with the Bosch GKS 55 GCE and GKS 65 GCE. A drawback of these tracks is that the Axminster UJK dog rail clips will not work with them as the required groove is on the bottom of the rail not the top, as is the case with the Festool rail. However, you seem to be happy just butting your track against the dogs and not attaching your track to the dogs.

I just bought a Bosch track saw and wish I had seen your video before I made the purchase. First day doing some test cuts and I immediately noticed problems with the bevel scale. It doesn't return to zero and instead of stopping at 45 it stops just past 46. If I release the button to go to 47, the arrow goes right off the scale. I checked the angle of the blade to the base plate, and the stops do seem to be setup properly, but the bevel scale is completely unreliable. I also agree with you about the zero degree set screw resting on that piece of plastic. Definitely disappointing.

Great video. Really need that today after laying paving in the snow. I dont know what its is called. But for your hose maybe you need a sky line to pull the hose higher so there is less friction. The sky line could slid on a rail and the line could be retractable like air lines in shops that use air tools. 👍

Thanks for the vid! I have the same tracksaw. Most of my tools are Bosch. It's so annoying because it has the potential to be sooo much better. Rails are amazing but wish they were slightly wider as you mentioned. The issue with the markings is not acceptable. I find that the plunge depth markings are also out by half a mm. The side of the saw is not flat and at the price it's at I really wish it had micro adjustment. Other than that it works great. If I were to buy again I'd probably get the festool!

I think the extra power of the Bosch over the festool is not to be underestimated. I’d probably buy it again given the chance, but agree that some of features are not good enough for the price. I’d like to know if Mafell owners have the same problem. I’ve just started using bench dogs on the track, and find they’re a bit awkward. Thinking of buying the hinged part of the MFT table and modifying it for my bench and Bosch track.

RE Dust Collector location: Put the collector outside under a shed roof next to the Pedestrian door, where your current piping ends. This makes the actual fine collection less critical, because it is outside the work area.

You have definitely thought the dust extraction through, and having a dedicated machine for the downdraft table is a good idea. But for extracting from your portable power tools at the table, I would recommend having the hose suspended above the table on a swivelling arm or bungee cord....it's the only way to keep the hose away from the edges of the table and stop it catching. I tried a smaller record machine mounted under my workbench with a socket for the extractor hose on the table top...I also tried mounting it at the side of the table, but the hose was either too long or too short and mounting it overhead was the only solution to keeping it off the table and stop it hanging up. If you could get some fine panel filters and a good fan, why not try building a powered filter box under your sanding table area to make it fully self contained?

Hi there, love your rant from another video but your Granddad was right . I am looking at this plunge saw for myself , but i am edging towards the festool plunge saw, do you with you had gone with that now rather than the Bosch one? ps i had same issue with my Makita track saw,,,then month later after farting about with my track by putting tape on it to alter the angle I too found a grub screw ,,,what a relief it was , i never smiled with joy so much - compensation for all the previous swearing. pss never been to Ireland, its a lovely place I should go over and you people are friendly :)

Thanks John - very good video. I would say Makita/Festool tracks are more suitable for this type of work (dogs). I am planning to buy 1000mm from Makita. Even more - one can use different (thicker) blades (Bosch has 1,.8mm kerf) without destroying rubber lip alignmnent. It is sometimes handy to use them. Re 90 deg alignment - I have no issue with scales but have had a problem with 90 and 45 deg alignment. I used inclinometr for this job. Just unscrew the top cover of blade, set the saw on the track and than align the angle of blade against the track. This works perfect - you have plenty of space around. You can even check if the angle does not change when you plunge-in - not to mention one can check if the blade is perfectly flat when mounted (should be - but from my experience it is not always true) . Most of all, once you fix the blade plunge position and saw position on the track I have both hands free to make any adjustment I need. Maffel can do this with a press of a button - with Bosch you have to unscrew 5 (or 6? I am not sure) easily accessible screws. It would be good if you have mentioned in your video that you can align 90deg as well as 45deg stops. Unfortunately out of the box both were misaligned by approx 0,5 deg. AFAIK 45deg stop cannot be set with Festool (only 90deg or go to service). Once the blade is aligned perfectly screw the cover back -and I found that scales were aligned perfectly as well. And repeatability switching between 90 and 45 degs was not a problem. It seems that checking the saw prior to first cut (as you said) is a good practice - especially when you ask for real precision. If it's not too late you might want to consider festool tracks if you're also in the market for parallel guides. The TSO parallel guides have a quick adapter that fits festool only. You basically just plop it down anywhere on the guide rail then pick it up when you're done. They can also be screwed to the guide rail if you prefer. It's a simple design and it makes breaking down sheet goods in a small shop less of a hastle.

Get yourself some pilosil or “braided” sleeving. VDC do all sizes you can think of. Then not sure if you come across it much in your domestic work, but try powercon connectors, for attaching bench. That or ceeform, but the later are obviously pretty bulky.

I was hoping to source some ideas on how to work with rips of more narrow stock, i.e. anything less than about 4"/8cm. Those widths are not clamp-able by the Bosch clamping system and I've had to niggle around a bit to come up with a makeshift method. Not seeing anyone with a KZbin title that addresses this issue.

Another great vlog John 😁. Just quickly on the dust extraction for your MFT, couldn't you go for drop down hoses? You are already half way there!. You could T in to your main "cross shop" pipe with a short outrigger pipe and then drop a single hose down to your table. Have a single connection on your table piped for the router and the downdraft, with an additional connection for a fly hose for the track (and cleanup) ! That way the Record never has to leave it's place by the door... it could work 🤔. Thanks for the video, stay safe 😁👍
