Das Lied "Herr Christ, der einge Gotts Sohn" ist eine Dichtung von Elisabeth Cruciger, geb. von Meseritz, Ehefrau des Mitreformators Caspar Cruciger. Es ist 1524 entstanden und lehnt sich an den Weihnachtshymnus "Corde natus ex parentis" des Aurelius Clemens Prudentius (348- nach 405) an. Der unbekannte Librettist übernahm vom fünfstrophigen Lied die beiden Randstrophen wörtlich und gestaltete aus dem Text der drei Binnenstrophen zwei Rezitative und zwei Arien.

The Bachstiftung pre-performance workshops are a wonderful introduction to the tight union between music and words, and form and content in the music of JSB. The Rudi and Karl duo almost always seem to get it right, balancing between lively lightness and serious substance. Staggeringly there doesn't seem to be anything in JSB's sacred music that isn't there for a particular reason and with a specific meaning. On this occasion I was disappointed though by Karl's somewhat critical and dismissive view on a 'hineinlesen' in David calling Christ his Lord (Den großen Gottessohn / Den David schon / Im Geist als seinen Herrn verehrte - Matthew 22): it is Christ (who is called the son of David by many others and on many other occasions) himself witnessing to his own divinity in his own exegesis and application of the passage in Psalm 110, and we should be ready to submit to this, rather than suspect a personal agenda of Matthew as the author of the gospel or a conveniently simplistic one superimposed by the Christian church.
