Ryan needed his competitor's edge to win this one, as it seemed he wasn't quote monstering the ball for the distances nor consistency he'd managed in previous meets leading in. The amazing thing about the winning throw is that Crouser was held for the 110m men's hurdles final and had about 5 minutes to ponder what he had to do to respond to Kovac's 22.89m bomb before stepping into that circle and making the clutch gold medal throw with a CR of 22.94m. Gotta hand it to Crouser and Kovacs for coming up clutch bigtime in consecutive World Championships with PRs in 2019 in the 6th round and in matching bomb for bomb in the 5th round in 2022. Crouser isn't just by far the most prolific human cannon in history but he's also got the mentality to deliver when he doesn't have the clear edge. He still hadn't won the Worlds and there was plenty of pressure on his shoulders heading into that 5th round throw and plenty of time to think about the gravitas of the moment. Top stuff to team USA in the men's shot. Terrific from Ryan and Joe, and a tremendous series from Josh Awotunde in bettering his pre-meet PR three times.
