Another fun consideration is the misunderstanding of remaining artifacts, I remember watching some anime back in the 90's that was mostly fantasy but the ancient ruins looked like a destroyed modern city and there were these cyborgs prowling around in in them, but the people thought that they were demons or a product of necromancy.

This idea really does best when you view history as cyclical. It just becomes a little spoiling to the plot if you say that history literally repeats itself unless you introduce something new that has never happened.

I think asteroids would be the most interesting apocalypse because they get up bacteria on them alien life maybe it affects gravity in some areas lots of potential

Algo que se me ocurre es un mundo post post post apocalíptico (perdón por el nombre largo, quería ser especifico y salió más o menos), o sea, un mundo ya, casi, recuperado, los imperios ya están decayendo y las mini potencias están agarrando fuerza, además de que ya está acensándose el sentimiento acelerar la recuperación del mundo.
