I have never seen this specific competition before, but this takes horsemanship to a new level. This test takes skills from just about every facet of riding and requires an exceptional horse to get to this level.

@@krisbaker9427I see what you are saying, but in this case she is not using a flashband to keep his mouth closed, and I didnt see any gaping, tongue sticking out, or excessive foaming to indicate pain in his mouth. There may be some, but as far as bit abuse goes, this lady is very soft. And she isnt even pulling him onto the vertical like many people in this sport do (sometimes behind!). She is letting him decide where to pozition his head that is most comfortable, which is so refreshing to see. There are much worse WE videos out there than this one

I first learned of, and fell in love with the idea of doing, this sport seeing a video of Pedro Torres and Oxidado. The two were so amazingly in tune and in synch. This pair and this performance don't look like that to me. I do acknowledge it is amazing to accomplish what they did here to this level.

How much greater degree of horsemanship by the rider and overall ability of the mount than barrel racing. I realize that it couldn't be performed at rodeos because of time and area constraints, by wish that it would replace what young women are suited to participate in here in the US. Well done!

100%!!! Some friends and I are educating ourselves and our horses in working equitation in our area. I would love to see WE explode in the U.S. equestrian scene. They Love it. I have large breed dogs. I don't know how, why or when, but I got into the habit of cupping my hand and thumping or drumming their sides. It sounds like a drum and their reaction surprised me. They started waiting for me to get to this part of our greeting. I think because it resonates within their chest. I don't slap the hem, just cup my hand and drum them. If I don't, they linger and wait for me to put down whatever is in my hands. I just rescued a starving hound puppy. He has been beaten, which is always heartbreaking. It took him several days to unclamp his tail from his belly. I wited for him to start selling my attention because I knew that if he had that kind of reaction, he was over the first hurdle. I was afraid to drum him because I was afraid that he might see my hand as a sign of abuse. But when I drum them my hand never gets more than about an inch away from their sides so, on Day 2 when I was really trying to get him to relax and except physical affection I started to drum on him slowly and almost quietly. The change in him was remarkable. It was as if, him feeling my hand and feeling the wave of the cupping through his body but having no pain associated with the touch kind of sank in the fact that he no longer has to fear. I knew that my dogs liked it but I didn't realize the effect that it would have on a timid dog. The waves going through their chest seem to let them feel my affection rather than just a skin deep stroke or gentle pat

@kimp2376
@kimp2376 10 ай бұрын
This was the speed event of the competition so only speed matters and not finesse so the horse probably was momentarily confused or trying to get ahead of the rider because he knows the course or at least the elements of the course and he knows he's supposed to do it as quickly as possible. The other half of this sport is the technical event where time isn't important and instead the pair is judged on accuracy, balance, and harmony. Watch this pair do that event and I'll bet the horse will look much calmer and confident. People tend to prefer watching the speed event because it's more impressive to the average viewer so that's mostly what pops up on KZbin. Hope this helps, it's a great sport and id love to try it sometime as a dressage rider.

I'd say its like a speed show jumping round. Sometimes the galloping with strong head tossing half halts and some scary distances run that wins, other times it is a smooth, balanced efficient round that doesn't even look very fast that wins. This one could have been more efficient.

@cabau3876
@cabau3876 11 ай бұрын
This is tradition Portuguese equitation so normally we use Lusitano horses, that were originally bred for bullfighting but are now mainly used for dressage. I do agree that a reining horse would probably be more loose and flexible, and that makes sense since some of the obstacles used for American disciplines are similar to these but I’ve never seen anyone use one in Portugal for portuguese equitation.

Too much pumping, kicking and jerking for my liking. Horse seems harried and stressed. I think the fact that this is timed is the problem... All of these maneuvers are wonderful training for a horse but when rushed at speed it seems to lose authenticity and just becomes about the prize. I have seen much better examples of working eq elsewhere with calm horses and poised riders who don't fling their bodies in all directions like a barrel racer. All that to say, this is a wonderful horse, obviously very well trained.

@c.brooks3013
@c.brooks3013 11 ай бұрын
A great majority of barrel racers couldn't do this because their horses are kicked and spurred in a straight line and yanked around a barrel. Most of them lack any finesse or flexibility because they don't bother to teach their horses anything except speed and that's because most of them don't really know how to ride beyond kick to start and pull to stop. Yes, there are some good barrel racers who do, and those are the ones that make it to the top but the majority of them are back yard arses that are just abusing the heck out of their horses and calling it 'fun' or 'gymkhana'.

It doesn’t really matter how fast, especially if horses are new to this type of exhibition, but that it gets through the course well and the rider appreciates what the horse has accomplished, namely finishing it and be rewarded with kind words and a pat on their necks, or maybe even a carrot for a treat.
