Port 29 Bar Harbor USA
Again woke up to thick pea soup fog. There were huge delays for some people in getting off the ship onto tenders boats, as everyone had to go through USA Immigration onboard. Many excursions, including ours, were cancelled due to these delays
Bar Harbor is a town on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay. It serves as a gateway to the mountains and cliffs of neighboring Acadia National Park. Towering over the park, Cadillac Mountain has trails and views of the town, the bay and the Cranberry Islands. It has a small resident population of approximately 5,535 including famous people like Martha Stewart and Susan Sarandon, until the cruise ships come in and can swell numbers to 20,000. Bar Harbor is a place for the wealthy who come and stay for the the summer. There are five islands in the harbor named Bar Island, Sheep Porcupine Island, Burnt Porcupine Island, Long Porcupine Island and Bald Porcupine Island.
We decided to go ashore, & just look around the town, & have a lobster roll for lunch. There were numerous cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops, to stroll around. Luckily we then managed to get a ticket on a wildlife cruise, leaving from next to the restaurant where we had eaten. This turned out to be a fantastic tour
Some other passengers did an Oli’s Trolley tour, just like the hop on/off bus. They reported that there was a great commentary from the driver, who also pointed out different houses belonging to the rich and famous.
Some people even managed to see beaver dams in the National Park.
As we sail away, heading for Boston, the fog has rolled in again.
