Kantha stitch is believed to be around 500 years old and can be traced back to the pre-Vedic age. It was traditionally practiced by women of all rural classes and passed down from mother to daughter through learning and dowry. The craft has had many uses, including:
Swaddling, Bed covers, Furniture covers, Make-up cases, Clothes wrappers, Rugs, Prayer mats, and Wedding dowries.
Kantha stitch designs often include ritualistic symbols and animals and were often used during childbirth and marriages. It could take months or even years to complete one kantha.
Kantha is a form of embroidery often practised by rural women. The traditional form of Kantha embroidery was done with soft dhotis and saris, with a simple running stitch along the edges. Depending on the use of the finished product they were known as Lepkantha or Sujni Kantha.
