Saturn's toxic reputation for poor 3D was just that, a reputation. The reality was very different and the three major Generation 5 consoles (PSX-SAT-N64) were far closer together than anyone at the time was willing to admit. This game is but one example.

I remember seeing this game in SEGA SATURN magazine and they praised the visuals and from memory gave it a really high score 98% maybe. I'm not big on soccer, but strangely i played SWWS 97 quite a bit.

WLS 98 features over 200 teams and 14 stadiums (with six different surface types, which can affect ball physics and thus game speed), with Peter Brackley and Ray Wilkins providing the commentary. It is an evolution of Silicon Dreams' previous football games; Olympic Soccer in 1996 and Soccer 97 for the PlayStation. It operates a higher screen resolution than most of its rivals (and its PlayStation counterpart). World League Soccer '98 has no official licenses from any football governing body, so cannot use the real names of club teams. Likewise player names are only "similar" to their real-life counterparts, however the team editor allows users to freely rename sides as they see fit*. Failing this, a secret option exists to convert all the fake names to their real-life counterparts, representing a legal grey area that was never challenged in the courts. *making the game never outdated by old team names. want Jimmy Hendrix, Darth Vader or Spare Tire to be the players of your team? just rename them to your liking :) Saturn uses mesh for the blue arrow, PS1 the usual transparency. for all you nitpickers who might make that a determining factor for the better port

Wow! The saturn has higher poly models, real shadows, better stadiums, and crowds! And don't get me started on that storm that rolls in! They did an absolutely amazing job showing why the saturn was a 3d beast as well!

A proper 2 cpu's development. That's why the saturn version is superior. Its stronger than the psx in almost everything (at least technically is) but in the practice was very rare saw proper results like this.

Disagree. It's the platform manufacturers responsibility to make sure their platform is as easy to develop for as possible. The Saturn was incredibly hard to write games for, while Sony put a lot of effort into making the PSX easy to develop for. In the early days, Sega expected people to write games in assembly language, but Sony released a very good C language SDK for their platform. Sega tried to catch up later with their own C SDK, but it was already too late.

Hard to decide.. I prefer the color of the grass in PSX, but the Saturn version seems to have higher resolution (especially noticeable in the goal nets) and a slightly better framerate. Will choose Saturn.

Framerate- Ps1 I liked how smooth the game looks compared to fifa 98 on ps1 which ran at lower framerate. The grass color also looked more accurate. The circular shadows beneath the players looked ugly asf though. Graphics- Saturn Players are looking less blocky here and they have long shadows instead of that ugly circular shadows which was a huge step up. The grass color looks super weird though, but it doesn't exactly look ugly either. But the game seems to be running at 30 fps, so that's a huge step down. Being that said, this 30 fps was at least properly framepaced unlike fifa 98 .

Yes, VDP2 is being used for the ground, as is the case for all sports games on Saturn. Despite its toxic reputation, software teams were able to understand the Saturn hardware and use its processors by 1996. The arrival of the Sega Graphics Library in late 1995 was the key factor.

A versão do Playbost@, parece meio desbotada, credo, prefiro do Saturn. Engraçado que tem nego que fala que o Playbostetion é melhor que o Saturn. o Play é tão melhor que os jogadores não tem sombra, a plateia não tem animação e o Frame Rate vive dropando e instável, as texturas são porcas. Playstation não é tudo isso não molecada, essa midia que inflar demais a marca, que cega essas molecada, deis de 1995 até hoje.

uns 100 milhoes contra 10 , mas nem sempre isto significa ser pior ou melhor sao negocios , se a sega fosse esperta tinha abraçado a square quando a mesma brigou com a nintendo por causa do cartucho no n64 e FFVII seria do saturn , ai meu amigo as coisas poderiam ter sido um pouco diferentes pelo menos no japao . ps1 vendeu muito em 1997 por causa de FFVII muito mesmo , até 1996 ps1 e saturn estavam empatados no japao
