Since we're counting only the earth's surface and not anything inside earth, it's possible to display that on a 2d surface, but it won't be easy

All maps before Makator were pretty dreadful, he solved the problem of navigational accuracy. yes, the land masses were distorted in size and got larger further away from the equator you got, but you could still draw a straight line on the map and get to where you wanted to.

Well, my geography teacher said that there's "no perfect" world map in the world. Every map are drawn to be used in different ways. Some show each countries' sizes, as the video showed, some show the right angle relationship, and some show the correct direction of sailing. There is no universally "correct" map. Different maps focus on specific purposes. The Mercator projection is for sailors to be able to sail across the ocean, and is "better" for that purpose than the Gall-Peters map.

Maps are meant for navigation, not for looking up the sizes of countries. In the Mercator map, if you plot a straight line from one country to another, the angle through the latitude and longitude will stay the same.

It makes places closer the poles bigger and closer the equator smaller The Europeans weren’t just sitting around one day and thought “hmm how can we make a racist map?” No. That makes zero sense. It is a map designed to aid in navigation made in the 1500’s. Which is when the Age of Exploration for Europe started and couldn’t have even happened without accurate maps to guide the explorers and guide the trade routes their explorations helped set up

The Gall-Peters map shows the correct sizes of countries, but it also distorts them. Countries are stretched horizontally near the poles and vertically near the Equator, so although the size may be right, the shape definitely isn't.

Here is my accurate critism. The Mercator map was uses only for navigation that means the same shape and distance to countries. The gall peters was made for size not shape. So just use the winkel tripen or Robinson map or even the equal earth map. Also dont say Mercator map is bad. You just can use it ncorrectly

The Mercator projection isn’t strictly wrong. It preserves shape, not size, which is fine for it’s intended purpose.

It’s also for navigation. A straight line on the Mercator is a straight line on a globe so for ships navigating the oceans the Mercator is an extremely important map to use

It’s not a “lie,” it’s a projection of a 3d globe onto a 2d piece of paper. The Mercator projection distorts the sizes in exchange for shape and general directionality, and the gall peters projection preserves the relative sizes while distorting the shapes

You see, even with your map, you had to stretch bits. It cannot be drawn into a flat plane without stretching bits or squashing bits. And anyway, this map is only used for educational purposes. It’s not like anyone is going to go sailing. The Mercator map is also good because a line on the map is a line on the earth. So not even your map is perfect.

"The map" isn't wrong. There are hundreds, if not thousands of versions of world maps. It's impossible to correctly portray a 3-dimensional surface in 2 dimensions. Each map has to distort something in order to get it flat. Every kind of map exists. Choose your preference

The Gall Peters map is still inaccurate, because it stretches the countries closest to the equator, The reason why both these maps are inaccurate is because they are globes that have been put onto a flat surface which makes an inaccurate map
