You are right, it is a very old Yiddish song from Ashkenazi origin. That its melody is used in Russia only shows they have a great feeling for music ;) but it is definitely not a Russian song.

I apologize for having to say that, but this song could be passed onto other people in this form. Music is history- passed on. Google any other Tumbalalaika version and you'll see what I'm talking about. Also check out Bublitchki which is another great song in this exact genre.
