Just got the tank and finished unlocking the STA-3 turret. You're right, this tank share the same paper armor genes as the Chi-To and Chi-Ri. It is a support tank. Thanks for the vid!

Post war Japan tank doctrine was a bit funny & that's why the sta-1 has weak armor. It was designed to be a scaled down American Pershing or Patton type, the engine compartment was small so weight had to be kept down to keep it mobile, also because of Japan's terrain & infrastructure heavy weight tanks were a no go, Japan was not allowed to have an actual army but only a "defense force" and of course the lack of steel and money after they wasted so much in WWII all were factors...plus Japanese people tend to be smaller in stature so another factor in building a small tank makes sense, copying American design made sense, the gun depression made sense because of the mountainous terrain in Japan...it was just made to be something to have on hand in the event of a Chinese invasion and fortunately for them they never had to use it as such because it would have probably been owned by swarms of Chino/Russian copies.So that's the long version of why it's armor & gun mantlet suck. :)

I, on the contrary, absolutely adored the STA-1. It's on my "buy back" list in terms of tanks. I played it like a Leopard 1. All my equipment slots were devoted to gun performance, which was already extremely good, so the gun became legendary. It has the DPM, the pen, the accuracy and reticle bloom, as well as the snapshot capability I really like. During my time with the machine I found the turret to be extremely trollish (trolled me as hard as it trolled the enemy) and I found a tactic known as front-scraping to help immensely (basically sidescraping with your front). Maybe I got lucky with that tactic, or maybe it actually worked. I don't know. Top speed was somewhat of a let down but I found it to be an actual top speed rather than a top speed which was only reached going downhill. Downhill, I found I could accelerate to 52 kph. So while it wasn't a speed demon, it wasn't a slouch either. Someone on the forums compared it with gliding on ice skates, and frankly, I agree. Again, your mileage may vary, but it my mind, it's basically a Pershing that sacrifices some armor for an infinitely better weapon and marginally better mobility.

you have no idea how much this helped my game play. I've always been a "bring the fight to you" kind of player, so the sta was kicking me in the pants. heavies, mediums, I'll get in your face with them. but this, oh lord. border line light tanks armor, on a medium that moves like a heavy. just a nightmare. well, until I watched this. I played it like you and my first game was a first classer. thanks for the help

Bushka, Love the videos, and I have to agree with you in regards to the STA-1. I actually liked playing it, but I had a lot of games played before playing it. I also had some very frustrating games, because of the lack of armor.

I used to hate the indien because I absolutely sucked at it. Then I played T44 and T54. OP !! I decided I need to get stb... and grinding the sta using the play style of the Soviets is no go.. get blown up every game, blamed the tank... after about 50games, free exped the gun and turret, I changed the play style, got used to the sta and it worked really well. So I guess every tank has its characteristics and we just have to adapt to it. This video is absolutely on point. Keep it up !!

Japanese tanks are my favorites man, the ability to successfully dish out pain when given by an opportunity is just pure gold. Versatile tanks that are able to bring the cannon to the enemy

I sort of agree but also disagree. While the STA does have weak armor and mediocre mobility, it can still punish the enemy pretty damn hard. I usually get 1500-2500 dmg games in it, and I play it carefully. The turret, although generally weak, actually does bounce shots. The mantlet area is insanely trollish, and I've gotten bounces with it (along with bouncing off of it myself). The gun is excellent, probably the best 90mm in its tier. The mobility, although a bit lacking, is enough to reposition and it gets to the top speed relatively quickly. That gun depression comes in handy a lot as well. It's not an excellent tank, but I certainly am enjoying playing it.

Just played a few games in my STA-1. Did decent. After doing amazing in my Chi-Ri, one of my top tanks (love the auto loader), this was quite the shock. It wasn't as fun, damage didn't come out in the truckloads like the Chi-Ri, but it's okay. It's not great, but competitive enough. Sure it can't carry but at least it can fend for its own. Great vid btw

Bushka - Having gone through the entire line in WOT (PC Master race game) - I can agree to an large extent that the STA-1 and Type 61 are difficult to enjoy and feel as if you are dominating - however the ROF (IS) the key to these two tanks IMHO - and of course -choosing shot placement carefully. The payoff is obviously one of the better (if not the best) finesse tanks in game in the STB-1, so, naturally, people will have to grind through these. To me, the STA-1 and Type 61 are more what I would call, "Opportunistic tanks" - they flank, shoot when something else is being shot at, and the ROF allows the tanks to whittle down the opponent tanks. (All just my highly bloviating opinion).

+Smackedown in PC they tend to have better dpm and alpha right? ALl i know is tha tin blitz if im in a T44 im pushing on an STA because i can peek a boom him for 280 with ap every time and im a bloody good chance of bouncing his shots. I can play any tank pretty much to a decent wr as a support tank and if you play with a good heavy driver or strong med you can leverage off that to do dmg, but low alpha high rate of fire paper tanks are very bad at just pouring out dmg in a peek a boom dominate game without insane DPM a'la the comet. But your are spot on with the playstyle smack.

Chi-ri is actually pretty decent. I had around 700 average XP and 61% WR. Autoloader is quite a beast.

OK, I'm going to be that one. I like the STA-1. In my admittedly small pool of tier 8 and higher tanks it has my 3rd highest win rate behind only the T-44 and E75, and is higher than my career win rate. And come on Bushka, how could you get your M so cheap? I had to do 4.5k with a Pools and 1470 base XP. :-( Still that gives me hope that I won't mind the Type 61 grind because the same issues you had with it are the same you had with the STA.

I disagree. Sta-1 is just lovely in my eyes. Ke-Ho, Chi Nu, Chi ri, Sta-1, and the STB1 are the tanks that i feel are worth keeping in the line. I just love the all roundnesses of the tanks, with their mobility, gun, and gun depression.

That is... Weakspot-ception 0.o Hide with this thing, play it as TD, same as Indien etc... And that's what you did, because of that you are succesfull, that makes a good player like you Bushka... And yes you can work ridges with your gundepression but not like the Centurion I / 7/1 who can stand and bounce shots with the gunmantlet, muuuuch more defensive, like it is said here, you have no amour... I hope so hard that more beginners would watch your vids and learn of your tips... But obviously not many do it...

The problem with this tank is its armor is too thin and it's unable to use its view range in such small maps. Blitz's map is wayyy too small for STA to be effective. You get spotted easily and your pretty much dead meat. Buff its armor on the turret to make this tank more competitive.

I'll do a T44 anytime for sure. One just can't carry in an STA-1 unless the planets are aligned and I've only carried in it twice. A *small* buff would do this tank well. I still love it. It does *especially* well on Castilla and Port Bay...
