Sadly in the 1950/60's it was used as a target for gun trials on the range and was not brought back to the museum till the 1980/90's so is sadly in very poor condition. Parked next to it at the last time I was at the museum. :((

Let me tell you a little story about "poor hardware" Aprox. 25 years ago, a russian fighterpilot defected to Japan and brought with him his MIG-25 jet. Naturally, the americans sent some heavy brass over, to look at this notoriously feared MIG fighterplane that turned out to be technically far less advanced than the rumors told. A high ranking american general expressed his satisfaction with the new discovery and as a good patriot he proclaimed that the Ivans had "no chance against the US Air force in a dogfight". A lower ranking general- Charles "Chuck" Yeager, claimed that it was not so much about the hardware but much more about the pilot. The four-star general made a bet about it, climbed the MIG-jet and challenged Yeager to take an american jet up for a (photo) dogfight. During the following high altitude dogfight, Chuck Yeager shot (photographed) his superior general, they switched planes and Yeager repeated the event, this time from the russian MIG. Ret. brigadier general Chuck Yeager is a decorated WWII fighter, he just celebrated his 95th. birthday. My point: When a 4000+ games WOT-player goes online, the hardware specs comes in second. The Churchill gun carriage was a experimental vehicle to test mounting high velocity guns on a vehicle. Only 50 were built between 1941-1942. Was never used cause the Challenger tank destroyer was sorted out and deemed a better vehicle.

done. the Churchill gun carrier was being tested from 1942-1943, 50 prototypes built but never saw action or large scale production. This eventually led to the development of the A39 Tortoise. the few surviving prototypes are either rusting or not running.

Reason the church hill is so famous, is because of that gun depression and armour, it's great for rocky open fields rolling gun line. It's a command tank designed to lead, throw on a good pen gun and high level radio that's all you need to grind out the exp to tier up.

I played a lot in this tank compared to others. Its in my top 5 most played tanks and I played it because EVERYONE was trashing it. And I kinda loved it, you can even sidescrap hiding your right side in city maps. But this tank is also why my favourite tank in thr game was the Hellcat. When you played like 500 games in the Churchill and then get the Hellcat you fell so free and powerful its almost outrageous.

Hey QB, if you want to know more about the Churchill Gun Carrier the real tank was called the "3 inch gun carrier Mk 1 Churchill A22D". Technically, the Churchill Gun Carrier should only have a 76mm gun known as the "QF 3 inch 20 cwt anti-aircraft gun" (Edit: I just looked in game and this gun is actually the stock gun for the Churchill Gun Carrier) but we really don't need a smaller gun on this tank now do we. In the end though the 3 inch gun carrier never saw any combat because by the time britain finished with development, they had already designed newer and better tank destroyers in the form of the Archer and the Achilles which had much greater mobility as well as being mounted with the 17-pounder.

I've always maintained that the Churchill GC is a good gun in a bad tank. In the right situations, it's deadly, as seen above. It relies on you being in the right place and the enemy being in the wrong place. It is most certainly not a flexible vehicle, like perhaps the Hellcat. The Churchill GC is kinda a one, or maybe two trick pony; sniper with good gun depression.

3in. Gun Carrier AKA Churchill G.C. still OP in War Thunder with the 3in gun one shots almost every vehicle and has a 37 degree traverse in neutral gear so T-50's can't circle strafe you to kill you and they can't pen with the 37mm gun.

Every time quicky insults the CGC I die a little. I’m a war thunder player. I adore the CGC because it’s got a big, fast gun, and if they don’t know about your weakness or you somehow hide it, you literally can’t be penetrated by the vast majority of the tanks it faces. Because of it’s length, it can rotate deceptively fast. If you know where the crew members in a tank are, you can kill them in 2-3 shots which takes maybe ten seconds if that. Artillery and skycancer do -nothing- to it’s top armor and I’ve had a bomb under me not kill me. Like all british tanks it has insane velocity which means very little shell drop. The ONLY downside in warthunder is your slow... but not as slow as the Matilda or valentine, which are the exact same rank as it.

As for whether the Churchill Gun Carrier was real? Yes, it's very real. The official name was "Gun Carrier, 3-inch, Mk I, Churchill". The 3-inch 20 cwt (the stock gun in-game) was in reality the only gun it ever mounted, and it never saw combat because the British realized it was crap.

I actually have one of my best tier 6 games in this. And I did keep it "yeah you read right". It's like the A-10. The hull was built around the gun, and the gun is all that's great about it. And in a support role that's all you need.

its a real.... vehicle. its listing is the A22D, Self propelled gun. 50 of them were made. Their "roll" was to be paired with and escort valantine and churchills. It would keep pace with the churchill until contact, then the churchill would advance while the A22D would hang back providing direct fire support. Problem was by the time it was "ready for service", the Archer, Firefly, and other 17 pounder tanks had already begun entering service so the A22D was simply, no longer useful.

As a new WOT player in 2013 I started down the middle of the British tech tree, landed on the Churchill I and after completing all research I got the Churchill VII but really disliked playing it. I had some success with the German TDs so I decided to try the CGC. At first I would agree it was pretty awful but once my crew became proficient enough I started seeing improved outcomes and the win rate after 100 games is now ok at 51%. I was thinking I would sell the CGC once I got to the AT7 but after having a string of decent games and getting my first gun mark I thought I'd persevere and keep it! Perhaps enemies see a bunch of targets then consider the CGC as not much of an immediate threat, just something to leave and farm later ? Methinks at their peril :)

The thing about this tank is that is has undoubtedly an amazing gun. But that's just about it. So if you miraculously just get left alone where nobody can spot you or if nobodies shooting at you. You can have a field day on an enemy team.

Churchill gun carrier main weakness is misrepresentation, People see him and expect another AT8 because of tbe way it looks and move. If he’d looks like a Nashorn you wouldn’t hear as much complaint. Churchill gun carrier main strength is underestimation, when playing with it you don’t have a lot of confidence wich means you don’t make stupid move, charge head on and play it for what it is not. CGC is a long range, ridge fighter TD that happen to look like a close range assault TD. That’s the worse thing about it.

Nice to see you giving some attention to this under-loved tank. I will agree that the tank is... not particularly good. Do I feel, however, that it is the worst tank tier-for-tier in the game (such as you have put in the description)? No, as I personally feel that the Pz III K is worse tier-for-tier for a few reasons - mainly down to the lack of armour and mobility and horrendous gun. As for the Gun Carrier, now that I've 3-marked it I feel like I can make a somewhat decent assessment of it. It seems to fill a weird role, overall. It plays sort of similar to the T25 AT in the US tech tree, except a tier lower and in many ways worse and in a couple it is better. Where it performs better is mostly when it comes to the gun. The 32 pounder is comparable to the 105mm gun on the T25 AT, albeit sacrificing alpha damage in exchange for more pen and slightly better base dispersion and even better soft stats on the gun. The shells are also noticeably cheaper, meaning that if - for whatever reason - you are grinding this tank, then you don't actually lose that many credits even if firing some APCR. The way I played it to get the 3rd mark was actually a little more aggressive at times than maybe most would play this tank, however. Though that may be down to the nature of gun marks requiring you to keep up with the action a lot of the time in order to get the damage you need. All in all, though, if you can get yourself into a decent bush or into a position to provide crossfire on enemy tanks then the Gun Carrier can actually prove to be useful. As for if it needs a buff; yes. Yes it does. I feel if it were to be given better mobility and perhaps a touch better camo, it would be fine. Alternatively, they could buff the frontal armour to bring it more in-line with the rest of the British turretless TD line.

It appears that Quicky got pen'd , probably by a 20 or 25 pounder, going by the size of the hole in his chest. The Churchill GC acts more like a piece of mobile artillery than a TD, too. Still, it obviously works pretty well in its role, so ugly isn't everything, and additionally, it's better armed than the tank that was its base design.

Quickybaby, I dunno if you'll see this but I have an question. I recently had an absolutely disgusting game on WoT Xbox in my STB-1, did 8.5k damage and 3k spotting with 2k bounced. In Blitz this thing is overpowered. But hey, mobile games are inferior in every way to proper, PC games. We can’t possible have an improved tank... Great camouflage, especially with a Kemping Net. No bush required. Excellent track traverse (for a turretless, quite WELL armoured td) Best penetration at the tier. Best dpm at the tier. Excellent accuracy. Best aim time if the tier for the calibre (maybe even out and out best). 130mm front armour all over the flat bit. Remember to ANGLE!!! 10* gun depression High credit coefficient, low shell cost for 250 alpha and no need to fire gold. Right speed for avoiding self yoloing and being rushed by the enemy. +- 1 tier. Only 6 noobs to carry and 7 unicums to kill.
